Chapter 5: The Friend

"Jeffery Davis?"

"Here!"

"Erin Meggeda?"

"Here!"

"Evelina Glade?"

Silence.

"Is Evelina here?"

I felt a shove to my arm and snapped back into reality. I had been nervously playing around with my pencils and blacked out. "Uh,.. Here," I replied weakly.

"Pay attention," the teacher said. She finished up the role call.

"Ok, class! Welcome to room A230. My name is Ms Dawson, and I am your homeroom teacher for the year. Now, we don't have much time before the first bell rings, so no time for long introductions. Have your proper materials packed and ready to go. For your class, homeroom will be right after block A."

The first bell rang, loudly. I jumped embarrassingly high in my seat as everyone began to file out of the classroom and into their first class of the day.

As I strolled down the hallway, I checked my schedule. It was hard to read when my hand was trembling so hard. I was so busy looking down at my paper, so I almost screamed when I felt somebody tap my shoulder.

"Quite jumpy, aren't you?" Replied the stranger next to me. She was rather tall, had pixie-cut light blonde hair, and wore a black leather vest with a black long sleeve shirt underneath, skinny jeans, and tall black boots. She wore dark make-up, contrasting her face like a black-and-white mask. Her appearance made me a little nervous to be honest.

"I won't bite," she said and smiled her flashing white teeth at me. "I'm Erin Magedda. We're in the same homeroom. Possibly some other classes too. So, what's your name?"

I remembered just in time that I had to tell her my Earth name. "Evelina," I said quietly. I stared down at my feet as we strided down the crowded hallways.

"Cool," said Erin. "So, what are your hobbies? Like, what's your favorite song?"

I swear I began to sweat. I didn't know everything teenagers on Earth did or what not. "I like all of them," I almost whispered. I looked up at Erin and saw a disapproving look splattered across her face.

"Come on, I'm trying to help break the ice here, but you're not cooperating with me! Here, I'll introduce you to some of my buddies at next break time. Sound good?" Erin said.

I swallowed. "Sure."

"Then it's settled. See ya," She waved as she disappeared into a random classroom. I checked my schedule again, still trying to figure out where I needed to be. I found it, room A220, and walked in.

The elaborate pattern of numbers and symbols on a whiteboard made my head spin. I checked down at my schedule to see what class this was. Algebra. Oh, Lord. With all the crazy crap happening to me right now already, I was not in the mood to calculate equations. I really hoped I would just collapse right there in front of the classroom so I had some kind of rational excuse to get out of there. The name Mrs. Engle was printed across the board.

I took my seat- which of course, had to be right in the front of the class. I slumped down into it angrily, staring at my desktop with dismay. While everyone waited for the teacher to arrive, all the teenagers were fooling around on their phones- which was against school policy- talked extremely loud with one another, or slept headfirst on their desks. I scanned the room of teens, and spotted one girl in the back corner. She had jet black wavy hair, dark make-up, wore a white tank with a dark red jacket over top of it, skinny jeans, and black boots. She reminded me of Erin from the hallway. Maybe it was one of her "buddies." I was curious to find out. Why did they seem to dress so similar?

My thoughts (and everybody else's thoughts for that matter) were interrupted by the clicking of the teacher's heels as she walked in the door. She dressed nicely and modestly, but her face did not exactly radiate kindness or softness. She looked about middle-age and stern. The bell rang, signaling the beginning of class.

"Alright, I have no time for long, drawn-out introductions, so we will begin class immediately. There are drills up on the board. Have a pencil and lined paper out, and begin working on what you know."

Irritated groans echoed throughout the room as backpacks unzipped and materials were brought out. I sighed, forgetting the rest of my enormous troubles for a while. Only one thing occupied my mind at the moment.

This was going to be a long day.
