Chapter 4: The Beginning
The next few days passed by in quiet, peace, and lots of rest. My wings started to heal, and my aches and pains diminished little by little. The Glade couple was extremely kind to me, despite my apparently "odd" or "extraterrestrial" appearance. They did seem a little taut whenever they came near me though, like I would bite them at any second. It made me sad how much of a freak I realized I really was. But personally, I think people should cut me some slack. I crashed down to this world painfully, I hardly even remember why, and am now having to go through and get used to all these new and perplexing feelings. How exhausting is that?
Well, now I found myself in a small, stuffy car with Henry Glade, driving to a place I thought I'd never find myself: School.
I never needed an education before I crashed down to this planet. I had a completely perfect mind, with an IQ of numbers you don't learn in school. But that fall changed me, physically, mentally, and emotionally. Instead of a borderline perfect being, I was a mushy heap of surreal emotions and physical changes. I guess I have to call this place home until I find a way to get back up to my first and rightful home. I shifted uneasily in my seat, staring down at my new strange outfit: jeans, tennis shoes, and a black and pink jacket. My medium-length brunette hair fell over my shoulders.
"You will be attending Coast Waldorf High School," Henry Glade interrupted my thoughts. "It is the closest one around. I hope your fist day goes well."
"Sure, thanks," I replied nervously. Gah, I hated all these weird emotions! It was driving me crazy!
"Oh, don't worry. You're just coming here to get a good education. Maybe you'll even make some new friends! Remember your homework, turn in your stuff on time, ask questions in the classroom-"
"I'm fine, Mr. Glade," I said, "It's not like my first time going to school or anything," which was partly a lie. This was my very first time attending school, but I was smart enough to know what to expect. "Why do I even have to go here Mr. Glade?" I asked. "Geometry proofs and the structure of a eukaryotic cell will not help me in the future."
"Depends on what career you choose," he replied. "Everything you learn in school is extremely crucial, whether it seems like it or not."I scoffed, irritated.
"Make sure to keep your jacket on and over your back and shoulders," he said. "We don't want anybody pointing you out or hurting you because of your..." He hesitated to find the right words.
"Deformity?" I put in sarcastically.
"Extraordinary appearance," He replied. A long and awkward silence followed, with the sound of the car tires on the road buzzing by various neighborhoods. Henry Glade finally spoke, "Oh, here we are."
When we arrived, I just sat there in the car for about five minutes just staring at the old, run-down building. It just looked like a gigantic heap of dirty bricks put into the shape of a building with some windows shot through it. It was very sad looking. There was paper and files stuck in the windows. Most of the inside looked dark and lonely. Henry Glade and I walked up the crumbling steps to the entrance. He introduced me to the principal, Mr. Towson.
"Your homeroom is room number A230. Good luck on your first day." He said. Henry Glade waved goodbye to me as he left the building.
Mr. Towson dismissed me, and I strolled down the hall, backpack in hand, heart pounding, to my classroom and start a completely new, very toilsome life.
