Chapter thirty one - Love Potion Number Nine.
After our rather eventful week it was restful to drive on over to The professor's house. The air was cool and the ice crystals clung to the trees a bit unusual for may. It was a good thing my car had a heater.
Fiona was on her way back from London, she had given Mycroft all the information that he would need. Which was good. It meant Sherlock was being watched. I let my mind wander, and soon I was in-front of the Professor's stately manor. I parked my car and walked up to the front door. I knocked and the door was opened by... Rachel?!
"Keyland?!" She exclaims.
"Rachel?!" I sputter as she pulls me in for a hug.
"Rachel what are you doing here?!" I asked
"I left Sebastian." She says sadly.
"What do you mean you left him?" I ask.
The Professor's footsteps were heard on the stairs.
"I'll tell you later." She says smiling sadly.
"Hello Miss Keyland! Do come in." The professor smiles.
"Hello Professor." I greet him.
I walked into the house as Rachel closed the door behind me.
"I don't suppose you have eaten yet?" He asks.
"No I haven't." I reply.
"And you Rachel?" He addresses her.
"No not yet." She admits.
"Would you mind making us a brunch then lass? We can all eat together." The professor says amicably.
"No problem Senor." Rachel replies.
She leaves with a small smile to me and heads off to what I assume is the Kitchen.
The professor gestures for me to follow him. As we near the laboratory he remarks.
"The drug you gave me to analyze was a very peculiar thing." The professor smiled as he opened the door to his laboratory. We entered the room and he closed the door.
"What was it?" I ask leaning against a table.
"In layman's terms I'd say a love potion." The professor laughed lightly.
"Sorry what?" I ask.
"The chemicals in the 'potion' were dopamine, serotonin, oxytocin. Which are the chemicals the brain produces when one falls in love." He clarifies.
"Whoa." I exclaim.
"So It stands to reason that this drug was intended to force somebody to loose their senses and go insane." The man continues.
"Why do you say that?" I ask.
"You see the chemicals in this they can be easily manufactured in a lab, but overdosing on any of them can cause schizophrenia, extreme paranoia, and insanity." The Professor explains.
My jaw dropped as he continued.
"And judging by the sheer amount of samples you brought to me I'd say this is more than enough to overdose." He looks at me for a moment. Scrutinizing my face, his eyes flicker to my neck.
"What happened to you?" He asks.
"I was attacked by a murderer who wanted my blood. That was ages ago though." I reply.
"Then why does this wound look fresh?" He says handing me a mirror. I examine the wound and then his face.
"If you are saying what I think you are I agree." I say slyly.
"You do?" He asks.
"My friend has been acting oddly and I think he has been giving me this." I say tactfully.
"I see." He says somberly.
"Is there anything I can do to nullify the effects of this potion?" I ask thoughtfully. The professor pauses and thinks for a moment. "I'm afraid that is out of my realm of reason. I am a chemist not a brain doctor." He replies.
I nod, worried.
"I do have some pull in academic circles however and I think if you give me some time I can whip something up. Don't worry lass I'll fix this." The Professor says laying a comforting hand on my arm.
"Thank you." I smile wanly.
Suddenly there was a knock at the door.
"Brunch is ready!" Rachel announced.
