Chapter Four - I Done Goofed
"Mom?!" I gasped.
"Keyland!!" She said tears springing into her eyes.
"Mom!" I said running in for a hug, hot tears streaming down my face.
"Mom I don't understand you are supposed to be dead, I'm not complaining but..." I stuttered, pulling back from her.
"I faked my death. I had to get away from Mortimer." She explained, not meeting my eyes.
"So you just left me?!" I yell as the shock gives way to anger.
"I had no choice!" She yelled back. The room got quiet. Liem laid his hand on my arm.
"You always have a choice... I can't do this right now." I say, shaking Liem off my arm and leaving the house.
"Keyland!" My mother called after me. But I was already gone.
I marched to the main road and called a cab.
"Where to dear?" says the man in his distinct British accent.
"Anywhere, just drive." I say. The elderly man nods and we drive. After a few minutes of silence the man looks in the mirror.
"I don't suppose you want to talk about it miss?" He says softly.
"About what?" I snap.
"About why you are so upset..." The man smiles.
"Well its not like I have anybody else to talk to..." I say reluctantly.
"Do you want me to pull over?"He suggests.
"Sure." I agree.
The man pulls over by a park, and waits patiently for me to speak. I take a deep breath.
"Do you have family sir?" I ask.
The man looks taken aback.
"Yeah, I have two children." He says softly.
"Do you love your children?" I ask.
"More than I can say miss." He nods.
"Then tell me this, why would any parent abandon their child?" I ask bitterly
"Perhaps... they had no choice miss." The man says looking at a photo on the dashboard.
"Alright but hypothetically speaking wouldn't you fight to make sure your children are safe?" I argue.
"I would do anything for that miss." He says gravely.
I stare out the window. The man looks at me and sighs.
"Miss, can I give you a bit of advice?"
I nod.
"We don't know how much time we have on this earth. Family is the most important thing." He says meaningfully.
"I suppose so." I agree.
"So maybe your family deserves a second chance." The man suggests.
I nod again tears filling my eyes.
"Can you take me back?" I ask, my voice cracking.
"Of course miss." The cabbie says pulling away from the park. My eyes look among the trees and for a split second I see somebody in a suit standing there. I dismiss it as my imagination. The cabbie takes a quick route home.
As I pay him I notice something in his ear. An earpiece.
"Good luck with your mum miss." He smiles and drives away.
As he does I note the British plates.
My mind works overtime.
British man in Ireland, with British plates, who knew about my mum... Brooke!
Richard must be using him to know where I live...He must have been at that park!
My family is in danger!
