BOOK: The Hobbit
AUTHOR: J. R. R. Tolkien
GENRE: High Fantasy
BRIEF DESCRIPTION: Bilbo Baggins is a hobbit who enjoys a comfortable, unambitious life, rarely travelling further than the pantry of his hobbit-hole in Bag End.
But his contentment is disturbed when the wizard, Gandalf, and a company of thirteen dwarves arrive on his doorstep one day to whisk him away on an unexpected journey 'there and back again'. They have a plot to raid the treasure hoard of Smaug the Magnificent, a large and very dangerous dragon...
REVIEW: It took me much longer than expected to read this book just because I'm currently in Amsterdam so I don't have much time to read. I did enjoy this book, but there was a lack of connection and engagement between the book and me. Fantasy is a genre I rarely read in and it isn't really my cup of tea; I find it hard sometimes to keep up with the plot and everything going on.
I found it really interesting to learn about the history and characters in the world, and generally enjoyed the recounts of the adventures of Bilbo and the dwarves. The style was super easy to read, and I really loved the songs and ballads intertwined within the story as well as the pictures.
I feel like now was personally the wrong time for me to read the book, and that thirteen-year-old me would have loved it much more.
FINAL VERDICT: While not being my cup of tea, I did like the book and will probably read again at some point in my life. I can see why it's so loved and adored, and I can't wait to watch the film. It had many amazing scenes, I just felt very disconnected to it all.
