BOOK: The Girl of Ink & Stars
AUTHOR: Kiran Millwood Hargrave
GENRE: Middle Grade Fantasy
BRIEF DESCRIPTION: Forbidden to leave her island, Isabella Riosse dreams of the faraway lands her father once mapped.
When her closest friend disappears into the island's Forgotten Territories, she volunteers to guide the search. As a cartographer's daughter, she's equipped with elaborate ink maps and knowledge of the stars, and is eager to navigate the island's forgotten heart.
But the world beyond the walls is a monster-filled wasteland – and beneath the dry rivers and smoking mountains, a legendary fire demon is stirring from its sleep. Soon, following her map, her heart and an ancient myth, Isabella discovers the true end of her journey: to save the island itself.
REVIEW: I have to admit that I only picked up this book because of its pretty cover and cool name, which looking back maybe wasn't the best way of choosing a book. As I've mentioned before, fantasy isn't really a genre that I particularly like or can get into so this book was a little difficult to connect with.
And that's really the only reason I didn't like this book. The writing was superb, and the plot was fast-paced and full of action, with interesting dynamics and world building. But I just didn't connect with it because I could really absorb myself in the world.
FINAL VERDICT: It's not really for me but it could easily be a great read for others.
