The Collector by John Fowles

READ: 10.05.17 - 12.05.17

BOOK: The Collector

AUTHOR: John Fowles

GENRE: Thriller

BRIEF DESCRIPTION: Withdrawn, uneducated and unloved, Frederick collects butterflies and takes photographs. A chance pools (like a lottery) win enables him to capture art student Miranda and keep her in the cellar of the Sussex house bought with the money. He sees the chloroform pad no more vicious than his butterfly net.

REVIEW: I really liked this book, and found the characters extremely interesting. The book is told from both points of view, which caused me to be conflicted with my pity and sympathy, and genuinely caused me to have a moral dilemma. The style was very fitting for the book, and it was overall a very easy and pleasing read.

There were parts of the book I thought were unnecessary due to the outcome of the book, such as constant recollections of Miranda's friends and a man mysteriously named G.P. I just think there was more that could have been said about how she was feeling in the moment.

The ending is tragic. Without giving any spoilers away, I was heartbroken for Miranda that it happened to her in that way.

FINAL VERDICT: It was a really interesting read. Maybe I had hyped it up too much in my head to fully enjoy it, but I wouldn't say it was mind-blowing.

RATING: 7.5/10
