The Catcher in the Rye by J. D. Salinger
READ: 14.04.17 - 17.04.17
BOOK: The Catcher in the Rye
AUTHOR: J. D. Salinger
GENRE: Classic
BRIEF DESCRIPTION: The story is told by Holden Caulfield, a seventeen year old dropout who had just been kicked out of his fourth school. Throughout the novel, Holden dissects the 'phony' aspects of society, and the 'phonies' themselves.
REVIEW: I had planned to read this book in a day but life kind of got in the way. This is a short book, and surprisingly easy to read; the writing mirrors the dialect of a teenager mostly so it did feel spookily like I was reading a book written by one of friends. I don't know how I feel about this book, and I get this a lot with books like this. For me, when a plot doesn't really go anywhere that can be a huge turnoff and this book was mainly focused on Holden's memories and feelings.
I could relate to a few of the things the narrator talks about, but in general I found it a little bit like someone complaining at me for however many pages. Don't get me wrong, it was enjoyable to read but I'm not sure I got it. Maybe I have to read it again, or do some research but to me this book wasn't life-changing.
FINAL VERDICT: I think I have to read this again to understand and appreciate it. That happens sometimes, sometimes I don't get a book the first time round.
