BOOK: On Murder Considered as one of the Fine Arts
AUTHOR: Thomas De Quincey
GENRE: Essay
BRIEF DESCRIPTION: 'People begin to see that something more goes to the composition of a fine murder than two blockheads to kill and be killed - a knife - a purse - and a dark lane...'
In this provocative and blackly funny essay, Thomas de Quincey considers murder in a purely aesthetic light and explains how practically every philosopher over the past two hundred years has been murdered. [Penguin Little Black Classics No. 4]
REVIEW: I really didn't think this would be as funny as it was. I love someone with witty or sharp humour, and this whole essay made me smile. I never thought I would find someone talking about murder so funny.
He made these outrageous, eccentric comments throughout which made me smile or chuckle, and that's something that I never thought would happen. I'll admit I became very confused about halfway through when he began talking about various high-profile figures of society, but I still enjoyed it.
What I really like about the Penguin Little Black Classics is they're making me see that I can enjoy all forms of writing if I just have an open mind.
FINAL VERDICT: A funny, light read which actually gave some valid, thought-provoking points.
RATING: 7.5/10
