Jude The Obscure by Thomas Hardy

READ: 29.03.17 - 03.04.17

BOOK: Jude The Obscure

AUTHOR: Thomas Hardy

GENRE: Classic

BRIEF DESCRIPTION: Jude Fawley, poor and working-class, longs to study at Christminster, but he is rebuffed, and is trapped in a loveless marriage. He falls in love with his unconventional cousin Sue Bridehead, and their refusal to marry when free to do so confirms their rejection of society.

REVIEW: I really didn't like this book, I'm not going to sugarcoat it. The characters annoyed me extremely, and everything in the book was so unrealistic. Everything that happened was due to some coincidence or surprise meeting, and to me that grew old very quickly. The characters of Sue and Jude got on my nerves massively, resulting in much eye rolling on my part; they are both so clueless and indecisive. Sue especially got on my nerves, her emotions flick and change so much.

In general the book did not appeal to me, and I think without strong characters the book really didn't have any substance. I've come to the conclusion that Hardy is not one of my favourite authors, and that I only loved his book 'The Mayor Of Casterbridge' because the plot and characters were so amazing.

FINAL VERDICT: I don't like this book, and it took a long and unnecessary time to read. I don't think I'll be picking this one up again.

RATING: 4/10
