BRIEF DESCRIPTION: Hidden away in the Record Department of the sprawling Ministry of Truth, Winston Smith skilfully rewrites the past to suit the needs of the Party. Yet he inwardly rebels against the totalitarian world he lives in, which demands absolute obedience and controls him through the all-seeing telescreens and the watchful eye of Big Brother, symbolic head of the Party. In his longing for truth and liberty, Smith begins a secret love affair with a fellow-worker Julia, but soon discovers the true price of freedom is betrayal.
REVIEW: I have wanted to read this book for years, but never got round to it mainly because I was intimidated by its content. However, I finally stepped up, and I really enjoyed it.
The plot and intricacies of this whole
story was incredibly fascinating, and it all felt very real and like it could have happened. Just when you think the plot is going one way, Orwell throws in a huge plot twist which recaptures your attention.
FINAL VERDICT: A really great read, and one that was both fascinating and terrifying.
