X. Defining Us (1)
Macau didn't like being ambushed. He doesn't even like surprise events, including birthday surprises. So it was understandable that he was beyond pissed when Kai went in secret to introduce his family. He had stated this to the man several times: He doesn't like surprise events!
Surprise events and the Mafia's world just don't go hand in hand very well. It was ingrained in his bones that he must take everything with extra caution.
He thought Kai would get that and not force something down his throat again, but he guessed he expected too much. Habits die hard, after all, Kai just likes to do everything his way. So, fuck what Macau thinks about it!
In retaliation, he ceased every way of communication with that man. Macau even didn't go out for the time being, so the only way for Kai to communicate with him was by going to the minor family's house.
For his credit, Kai actually did it. He religiously went when his schedule permitted. Almost every damn day, sometimes even two-three times a day, with so many excuses that got either Vegas or Pete rolling their eyes. Even when Macau didn't even look at him, let alone say something.
Macau felt he needed to get away. Being close to Kai seemed to cloud his judgment more than he liked. He found himself just going along with whatever Kai thought and wanted as soon as that bastard opened his mouth.
Including this relationship.
What was this actually? They haven't even said those three little words or made it official that they are indeed a couple and now they jumped to introduce him to his family and marriage talks. It's confusing!
Macau knew they were 'something' exclusive, but didn't realize it was that serious until he was face to face with Kai's family. That was why every time someone asked him what was the status of their relationship, he merely smiled, not wanting to say the wrong thing. But the public made their own assumption when they saw how Macau and Kai together, splattered across any gossip outlet known to Thai people.
Kai didn't treat him like his previous partners and rendezvous. The guy painfully doted on and spoiled him publicly, bringing him food and drink, sometimes even feeding him himself, or wiping his sweat, or simply looking at him in a certain way that got people to gush. Rarely do people see them walking together without one body part attached to each other. Not to mention all those kisses. It screams LOVERS from miles away.
Kai even mentioned his name in interviews while grinning like idiots! He casually said, "My boyfriend will kill me," when the interviewer asked if he still attended wild parties. The interviewer then asked, "Your boyfriend is Macau Theerapanyakul, right? Is that correct?"
Kai nodded and said, "Yes, correct."
"Isn't Khun Macau also like to party?"
"Not that kind of party. My boyfriend likes to have fun, yes, but I assure you not that kind of party. He's a good boy."
"So, can Khun tell me what kind of party is it actually that made a Theerapanyakul steer clear?"
Kai laughed. "I'll pass in answering this one and please don't dig more. He's going to be pissed and I'm going to be in trouble." The interviewer laughed with him.
"If he is indeed angry, what are you going to do to make up for it?"
"Mac is not difficult, in reality. That's just how people assume him to be, being the youngest in one of the richest households in Thailand. He is actually very considerate of others. He's just ...," he didn't continue and smiled like an idiot again and people went into an uproar and flooded Macau's social media with comments.
Like that. If anyone is dumb enough not to believe there is something between them, that surely can change their mind.
Macau is not blind or dumb. He knew what that meant. 'Boyfriend' is an acceptable status and he is fine with it. He isn't the kind who likes to sleep around like his brother or cousins in the past. He wants what Vegas and Pete have, but he also thinks he is too young to have what they have.
At first, he thinks that being with Kai is right between them. Kai is not someone who is into a steady relationship (or any romantic relationship, really, let alone marriage) and he is eye candy, fun to be with, great in bed, great assets, not scared of his family's name, and kick ass.
He thought this was just for fun that lasted only weeks or months.
He never realized Kai wanted anything serious, given how the guy acted in the past. Even Vegas was surprised to see how Kai acted with Macau. "It's like someone pulled a switch to got him to change from night to day," Vegas said.
How serious is this relationship that Mac to freak out, you ask? Kai's mother texted and called him every day and addressed him as 'son' every damn time. His father, FATHER, called him to ask him to clear his schedule at the end of the month to take him fishing. His sisters liked, commented, and reposted every single time he posted something. They wanted to go shopping or eat lunch/brunch and Macau knew he couldn't dodge them anymore soon. The family's head estate manager had texted him the list of the family's events and stated they would assist him in anything and everything like The Theerapanyakuls don't have money and means in the first place. He isn't even married to the guy yet!
If that didn't scream SERIOUS in capital letters, Macau didn't know what does. To be frank, he is feeling overwhelmed.
Yes, he was flattered, but he was scared at the same time that a big and famous family the Chaimongkons just accepted him with ease. A man. To have a relationship with their firstborn. Firstborn, especially a son, is important to nearly every household in Thailand, especially when your household is powerful and rich.
No one object. No fucking one. Not even from Kai's big family. From what Charn said, his both pair of grandparents even delighted that Kai is with Mac and can't wait to see him in person.
Sure, his family was even more than the Chaimongkons but their background was as black as midnight without stars. There was gotta be someone who disliked them in that family.
He was seeing Kai for, what, five months? Six months? Still, there was nothing negative from Kai's side. Maybe Kai was just that good at pressing them, those negative things.
Man, he just hit 20 last month. His birthday was another story to tell (there was a surprise and guns included in it). But the point was, he still got so many things that he wanted to do when he was single.
Single.
The title was tempting.
So Kla invited him to one of his car race tournaments in Japan. Being a good brother, of course, Macau accepted as Vegas and Pete were also going. But since Kai had a prior schedule, he couldn't. That was why he was sulking and begging Macau to not go but fell on deaf ears. Macau simply didn't respond. He's not Porchay. He is used to sweet words, ridiculously expensive gifts, and handsome faces. So unless Kai bows down and is on his knees, he can brush it off.
So he flew, touched down, indulged in good food and good shopping with Phi Pete when his Hia was busy with business, and then went to great parties.
Like this one.
Macau has to admit this party is the next level from some of the greatest parties back home. He can tell whoever threw it, is not scared to burn money.
He is enjoying himself, away from his brothers, when a guy sits beside him. His rather hoarse voice sounds other-worldly when he orders the bartender. He must be someone with power if Macau judges him for how quickly and swiftly the bartender does his order.
"Hi," the guy greets. Macau nods his head politely with a smile. "My eyes keep coming back to you all night. So I figure might as well get to know you."
Macau raises his brows. Great pickup line! (/s). But his English is very good.
The guy extends his hand, "Naozumi Hiyama," he says.
Macau shakes his hand. "Macau Theerapanyakul."
"You're with Vegas?" Macau nods, "You know my brother?"
The guy laughs. "Yeah, known is not the exact word."
Macau can guess three different scenarios with this one. One, they were fuck buddies. Two, they pissed at each other. Three, both.
So he gushes a laugh and then shakes his head. "I don't want to know the story, man."
Nao smiles. "You're nothing like him. I wonder why?"
It gets Macau to freeze. The way he said it and his wording, it's tilting to ... Something.
"You got a love, Macau?"
Lover got one. But Macau doesn't want to think about him at this moment. So he doesn't answer and just sips his drink.
Nao seems to understand because then he slips a card into Macau's front pocket of his shirt and says, "If you want to forget about him or her or anything in between, choose me. I swear I can make it worthwhile."
