Chapter 5

The assistant and the little girl made their way to the church. Payolo was really happy that they were faster than when Noir was driving, Amagy was relieved that they were still alive despite the fact that they were way above the speed limit.
They both entered the holy place, only to be met by the judgmental gaze of the nun.

"You? Again? Are you going to disturb the peace for much longer?"

"Not at all." Said Payolo to the nun. "We're here to end this case once and for all."

"So you found the culprit?" Asked the nun, with a curious expression.

"We will soon, I have some questions to ask."

"Hey, she has nothing to do with that!"
The origin of the voice was unknown until Payolo and the little girl turned toward the entrance. It was Neige, the boxer they saw at the hospital. Payolo remembered that they were friend, and it made it very practical for her to interrogate both of them.

"Don't you have a culprit to catch?"

"Do not worry, I just have some questions to ask." Payolo said in a soft voice, but it didn't make things better. Thankfully for her, the nun decided to come to her help.

"It's okay Neige, it's just some questions, and then they'll go away."
The former boxer accepted but wasn't convinced.

The assistant knew that she didn't have a lot of questions she could ask before they lost patience, and decided to directly question her.

"Zayda, earlier you claimed that the first time you heard of the victim, Lucien Fox, was the 4th of October."

"It's true, and?" Asked the nun with exhaustion in her voice.

"Well Neige earlier admitted that he told you about him before, isn't it true!?" Payolo asked forcefully, pointing at Neige.
He looked a bit uncomfortable, looked at his friend, and finally answered.

"You must have misunderstood. I never said that."

"What?" Payolo was taken by surprise, she looked at her notes and confirmed that the man told her that information before.

"That doesn't make sense, I'm sure it's what he said..." Payolo whispered to Amagy, who whispered back at her.

"I don't think he wants her friend to look suspicious, it looks like he's ready to lie for that."
Annoyed by the turn of events, the young detective took a deep breath to refresh her mind.

"If they lie, then so be it. A lie always brings to another lie." Taking back her confidence, she was determined to find the truth and pointed her finger toward Neige once more.

"Wasn't Lucien Fox your rival? Wouldn't it make sense that you would talk about it with your friend?"

"I didn't want to annoy her with that, I know it would make her uncomfortable if I talked too much. Are we almost done?"
She knew that they were hiding something, but couldn't force them to admit it. Payolo was lost in her thought, thinking deeply in the empty church.

"We'll never make them admit anything like that." Said Amagy, saddened by the situation.

"If they want to lie, then they can. We'll throw them off guard and see if they can stay consistent. He's hiding something, and I'll find it." Payolo said in a confident way before starting to question Neige again "Well Zayda still stays as the principal suspect, she was the only one on the scene of the crime that could have done it."

She was still unsure whether Zayda was the real culprit, but she needed something to get a reaction from Neige. And thanks to her strategy, she did manage to get a reaction from him.

"Wait, did you ever think about a suicide? Maybe Lucien did it on purpose!" Said Neige with desperation in his voice.

"He's really trying hard to protect her." Notice the little girl. "But he's right, it could be a suicide technically."

"I doubt it." Argued Payolo. "I don't think he would use a gun to kill himself, and I'll prove it."
The young detective took a short moment to think, before going back to the offensive.
"If it was a suicide, he would have put the gun really close to his head. It would have left some gunpowder trace, but according to the autopsy, none was found. The only possible culprit is Zayda, but if you let me ask her some questions and that she's truly innocent, I swear I'll find the real culprit."

"You think you can?" Said Neige, with a haughty voice.

"Of course, do you trust me?" Payolo put her on her heart while saying these words, hoping to convince Neige, but things weren't going to be like she wanted.

"Fine, I guess you would have found out eventually. I'm the true culprit."

Everyone in the church stayed silent at Neige's words. Payolo couldn't believe what she just heard.

"What are you saying Neige, it's impossible!" Said the nun in an attempt to scold her friend. The young detective and the little girl were both shocked, but Payolo still kept her calm despite the bold claim of the boxer.

"She's right, there was no way for you to be inside the church at that point. The Hospital wasn't allowing you to leave.

"It's not like they could stop me, I just went to see my friend for a visit, but when I saw him there, my blood boiled, and I ended up shooting at this man. I didn't want Zayda to see me like that, so I left."

"But you wouldn't have been able to come here." Added the nun to defend her friend. "I was here all day and night, and I never heard the door open. You wouldn't have been able to come."

"I know about the hole behind the church for a while now." The man said coldly. But what he just said was surprising to Payolo, if it's what she thought, it could change the whole case.

"A hole behind the church? It's another way to enter?"

"Yes." Confirmed Neige. "The church isn't really in a good state, it didn't get a lot of repair. It's been a few months now."

The whole case was taking a new turn, if he was telling the truth, then anyone could have entered and left the church.

"So you mean that everyone could have entered?"

"As long as they knew about this 'entrance', let me show you."

Neige brought everyone to the hole, it was really showing the age of the church, but it was behind the church and hard to notice.

"You knew it all this time miss nun?" Asked Amagy in a worried voice.

"Yes, but if I told it to the detective, then you would have been a suspect. I didn't want you to get arrested."

"So that's why." Payolo thought aloud. "But it still doesn't prove it's you!"

"I knew about his arm, he got hurt too. He wasn't like that after our fight, so he must have had his injury later. The only way I could have learned about it was if I saw him that night."

Payolo was thinking, he was right. Lucien got his injury on the 3rd, if Neige had been at the hospital, he couldn't have known about it.

"It's because I told him about it." Said the nun before Payolo could conclude anything. "I told him the day after the murder, I was really shocked about it."

The young detective was getting annoyed at those two defending each other. But she noticed the error that was just made.

"Neige, how did you know about his arm injury?" Asked Payolo, trying to catch Neige in his lie.

"I saw him, how else could I have known?"

"I think you know about how the victim got hurt in the arm. The injury wasn't visible, and while it limited the use of his arm, there was no external sign of injury. Unless he talked about his injury, the only people who would have known were the people who were here when he got injured. And besides, Zayda never specified anything about an injury before, so I think she wasn't aware of it."

"Wait, I swear I really-"

"Listen, Mr. Neige, I'm here to find the truth, lying won't help the case. Please, both of you, tell me what you really know so we can catch the real killer."

Neige and Zayda both looked at each other, they took a moment of thinking before Neige broke the silence.

"Maybe we should trust her, maybe she really can solve this case."

"You know that detectives only care about causing trouble. But maybe you're right, she seems like she still wishes for justice somehow."

The two of them nodded their head before facing Payolo and Amagy. Neige was the first to talk to her.

"So yeah, you're right. I wasn't the killer, but I knew that Zayda was the main suspect, so I had to do something."

"It's okay." Assured Payolo. "So what really happened?"

"I left the hospital every day to come see her, even if I wasn't allowed. Actually, I was supposed to stay longer, but the nurse said that as long as I came back at night it was fine. The 3rd, I went to the church, but on the way here, there was Lucien." Neige clenched his fist and grimaced when he thought about the memory.
"He was just mocking me, he rubbed at my face the fact that I couldn't fight anymore. I admit, I wasn't in control, and I attacked him. Boxing gloves are made so we don't hurt too much, so I didn't really gauge my strength, I never fought without gloves before. In one hit he was on the ground, holding his arm in pain."

"Later that night Neige came here." Continued the nun. "He told me what happened, and I said that it would be alright, but that he should stay at the hospital for now. So the 4th, he stayed at the hospital. I didn't see him at all, since I had to clean the church. The only time the door opened was late at night, at 11 pm. I thought it was just someone who came to pray, so I didn't pay attention. After a moment, I heard voices, then a gunshot. Everything was as I described to you, but there was a detail I omitted. The first person I called was Neige. He said that even if I was innocent, I could be a suspect. That's the reason I lied about not knowing Lucien, I even met him before, but if I admitted it, I would have been the number one suspect."

The young detective was overwhelmed by everything she learned. If they said the truth, then the culprit is someone completely different. There was no way to know who did it without learning more.
The loud door of the church opened, Noir and Lester both were here. Relieved that her partner was here, she rushed toward him, hoping he would have an idea of what to do next. But to her surprise, the detective spoke in a deep and serious voice.

"Payolo, you are arrested for the murder of Lucien Fox. You have the right to remain silent, everything you say can and will be used against you!"

"Noir, what are you saying? There has to be a mistake!"
