Chapter 4

The detective, his assistant, and the little girl were patiently waiting for them to get to their destination.
Amagy was still feeling bad from the sound of the engine, but Payolo's help managed to calm her. They talked about a lot of things, well Payolo did, while the other two stayed silent.

"It's only been a year, but me and Noir really lived some crazy stuff together."

Payolo had a soft smile, reminiscing about everything she did this year. Amagy's curiosity about their detective life pushed her to ask, despite the stress she was experiencing.

"Why did you become a private detective?"

Payolo thought about it for a lot more time than the little girl expected. Was she not sure why she became a detective?

"It's a bit complicated." Said Payolo. After a long silence, she continued her story. "My parents died when I was a child, they never caught the culprit. It was sixteen years ago, so he'll never be brought to justice now, the statute of limitation is thirty years for murder anyway, I doubt he'll get caught until then, and there's almost nothing that could lead to him anymore. The more time passes, the harder it is to find a culprit."

"Is it why you became a detective? To catch him?" Asked the little girl, feeling bad for Payolo's past.

"I guess it was the reason, but I couldn't pass the exam to be an official detective from the police. I was supposed to wait a year to pass the exam again, but I needed some money. That's when I met Noir, and since then, I've been his assistant. It's pretty fun so far, I didn't even pass the exam this year. I made peace with the fact that I'll never catch the killer, but I want to help people as I can now."

"Isn't it giving up?" Asked Amagy, uncertain if she was really right. The assistant smiled at her, before telling her calmly.

"Yeah, but sometimes giving up isn't bad. Not everything is worth pursuing, especially things that are bad for us. For me, working with the police wasn't worth it."

The little girl was thinking for a while, before asking the detective.

"And you? Why are you a private detective?"

Payolo couldn't help but giggle a bit at the question asked. The little girl was confused by her reaction and had to wait for the assistant to explain what she found so funny.

"I tried to know for a while now, he won't say anything, no matter how hard I try to know."

Amagy was a bit disappointed that she wouldn't know, but to the surprise of the two girls, the detective actually answered.

"I was twenty and full of dreams, I managed to join the police forces. I worked as a detective there for ten years. Lester used to be my partner, but people there are just pretentious who want to feel superior to the rest of the crowd. I left and didn't have a job anymore, so I worked as a private detective, still hoping to find that spark I used to have."

Payolo looked at him with a confused look, before interrogating him.

"That's... The first time I hear of it, why didn't you tell me before?"

"All stories need to be told one day, or else they'll be forgotten forever."

"You're saying that like it's going to be the last case you solve."
Said jokingly the assistant, but Noir still kept his cold and composed self.

"Maybe it will be."

Only the sound of the car could be heard, the silence stayed hanging in the air. After a few minutes, they arrived at their destination, the police station.

Noir and Payolo weren't really welcome here, they were always seen as troublemakers, only here to put their noses in places they weren't asked or welcomed.
Lester, the police detective, noticed the familiar group and came to greet them.

"Noir, that's two times that I see you today, how have you been since last time?"
Ignoring Lester's words, the detective directly pointed at the paper in Lester's hand.

"It's the autopsy report?"

"So papers are more important than your old friend?"
The man said while acting falsely offended. He handed the papers with a slight grin on his face, to the surprise of Noir.
"Immediate fatal traumatic brain injury by bullet, which means he was dead instantly. The guy must have been used to firing his gun, it's hard being that precise."

"Who isn't in this city? Everyone has one these days."

"Not wrong." Agreed the detective. "There were no signs of struggles, but we noticed something interesting. He had an injury on his arm, doesn't it remind you of something?"

"Just like Neige!" Noticed the assistant. "Was he hurt from the fight too?"

"Not quite." Added Lester. "The wound was made the third of October, two days after the boxing match. I searched, but found no record of another match the victim was in."

"Why are you telling us all of that? It doesn't look like you Lester." Asked Noir, confused by his behavior.

"I'm sure you know, you're not dumb, this case is linked to you, right?"

Noir stayed silent, but the assistant was confused about this statement.

"Linked to Noir? But he had nothing to do with it!"

"I'm not saying he's the culprit, but isn't it strange that Lucien asked for protection from Noir, and the day after he dies?"

"Well, yeah... But there are many cases we have to take care of, we can't deal with every one of them, and it doesn't make him a killer!"

"Sure." Said Lester, confidant in himself "What were you both doing the night of the 4th around 11 pm?"

"We were at the office all night, I left it for 30 minutes to get some food, but Noir stayed in, he even was there when I came back. It would take 15 minutes by car to go to the church, so he wouldn't have time to do anything."

"That's not wrong, but 15 minutes is when you follow the speed limitation. At night, nobody would be there to stop you from going a lot faster around the city."

Payolo was desperately trying to innocent Noir, she knew he couldn't have killed the victim and was determined to prove it.

"If we imagine he would go as fast as possible, it would take 10 minutes to get there. In 10 minutes, he could have killed Lucien, but wouldn't have been able to leave without opening the door. The nun discovered the body five minutes after he was dead. And if we take into account that she met with Amagy right after, it wouldn't have left a lot of time for Noir to get in the office before me."

"Difficult, but possible." Said Lester with a concerned but amused face.

"It would have been, but he couldn't park the car next to the church, or he would have been seen driving away. All of that, coupled with the lack of evidence, shows that he couldn't have been the culprit."

Lester applauded sarcastically at the assistant's debating skill, making her confused.

"You seem pretty sure he's innocent, to be honest, I don't think he's the culprit. But I think he's closer to this case than he's willing to admit."

"So... We can leave?" Asked shyly Payolo.

"Of course, but I wanted to show Noir something, it will just take half an hour."

"What is it?" Asked Noir, already knowing his question wouldn't get an answer.

"It's a surprise. Your two little assistants will need to wait here for a moment."

"They don't have to wait, we were supposed to ask some questions to the nun, I'm sure they'll be able to handle it."
Noir threw his car keys at Payolo, who looked at him confused.

"But... I don't have my driving license?"

"The cops are too busy to check, and if you look confident enough, everything will be alright."

Lester and Noir both left deeper into the police station, leaving the assistant and Amagy alone together.

"Well, let's go to the church I guess. *Sigh* Why do I end up in these situations."

Payolo and Amagy went to the car. The assistant touched every part of the car she could before managing to turn on the engine.

"Do you know what you're doing?" Asked the little girl, afraid.

"Of course, I saw Noir driving that thing a lot!"  Affirmed Payolo while looking for a way to make the car go forward. The little girl explained how the car worked before saying her concern out loud.

"I don't think you know how it works."

"Of course I do, it's like a mystery to solve!"

The two of them headed toward the church to continue their investigation, even despite Amagy's worries for their safety.
