Chapter 2

The detective, his assistant, and the little girl who just got saved out of trouble all went to the office.
Noir immediately went to make some coffee, leaving Payolo and the girl alone on the couch. In an attempt to make her comfortable, Payolo began to make some conversation.

"I'm Payolo, and the big guy there is Noir. We just want to ask you some questions, and then you'll be able to go home, okay?"
She gave a warm smile to the girl, but the girl didn't give it back and even looked away.

"I don't want to go home."

Surprised by those words, the detective's assistant planned to ask more but stopped when she saw a wound on the girl's arm.

"How did you get that? Let me give you a bandage!"

Payolo hurried to take the first aid kit and quickly treated the girl's injury, but despite that, she still looked uncomfortable and refused to look at the assistant in the eyes.
While her arm was being wrapped in bandages, the girl's uneasiness slowly started to disappear.

"Thanks..." Said shyly the girl.

"It looked like someone hit you, who did that?" Asked the assistant, without any answer coming to her.

"Probably a cop or something." Said the Detective in the midst of the conversation, all while sipping his coffee "She was probably living in the church those last days since she had nowhere to go, and since the murder occurred two days ago, the nun would have noticed the wound by now. But she didn't, so it probably happened recently, while the police took her in custody."

"You're really the best Noir, I wouldn't have thought of it at all." Said Payolo with stars in her eyes, like she was admiring her idol.

The detective hands a cup of coffee to his assistant and the little girl before sitting down in front of them with a serious tone.

"I know kids don't like coffee, but it's all we have here."

"I'm not a kid anymore." Said in a rebellious tone the girl. But even despite her words, she couldn't drink the coffee without making a weird face at each sip.

"So, can you tell us your basic information?" Asked the detective while pulling out his notebook. The girl stayed silent until Payolo herself spoke up.

"We need to know more, or else we won't be able to help you."

The girl stayed silent for a moment and was thinking deeply before finally answering.

"I'm Amagy, I'm fourteen since last month. I come from the neighboring country of Nirna."
The detective noted everything from this short description, even if he was annoyed that the girl wouldn't listen to him.

"And why were you at the church?" Asked gently Payolo.

"I was thinking that maybe I could sleep in there, I didn't think there would still be religious figures here. In my country, just seeing a church still standing is a miracle."

"Is the situation that terrible there?" Asked again Payolo, unaware of the political situation of Nirna. The girl stayed silent, so Noir was the one answering.

"This place just became a place for people with high power to get even richer. The constant war and terrible living conditions made it common to see people migrate from here, but the laws of our country don't allow it easily."

"So that means..."

"Yeah, that your little friend is technically here illegally. But this city has so many problems that nobody will bat an eye about her."
Noir reads his notes again, before continuing to talk.

"Looks like we can't get much else from her. She just was at a bad place at a bad moment. I managed to make a list of suspects, it's not much for now, but it's always that."

"Wait," Payolo said to cut the detective. "What do we do with Amagy?"

"Her? We'll send her back to the church on the way out."

"Please no! Can I stay with Payolo?" The desperation in her voice was so unusual that it caught the two partners by surprise. "It's warm here, and in the church the nun sings in the middle of the night, I don't want to go back there."

Payolo looked at Noir with an imploring gaze, she didn't want to send the girl to a place where she wasn't happy. The detective thought about it for a while, before finally giving his thoughts after a sigh.

"I'm too busy to take care of a child, but if you think you can take care of her, then she can stay."

The two girls looked at each other with a smile, even if Amagy's smile was much more reserved than Payolo's one.

"I finally have an assistant now!"

Noir wondered if this wasn't the real reason Payolo wanted Amagy to stay, but he decided that it wasn't his problem and brushed it off.

"So, for the suspect in the case. First is Zayda, the nun of the church."

"Zayda!? But she was the one reporting the body to the police!"

"It's true, but if you kill someone in your church, it would be quite hard to hide it, so it's better to report it. She has no alibi, and while she has no motive either, I feel like she knew the victim before."

"Fine, I guess we have to doubt everyone, but nobody has an alibi, so we should doubt everyone." Said Payolo already exhausted.

"Actually this little girl has one." He said while pointing at Amagy. "If the nun saw her enter and that she couldn't leave without being noticed, then she's most likely innocent. The nun could have lied to protect her, but she has no reason to. I imagine she must hate the killer for killing in a holy place like that."

"Make sense, but the only person there was the nun, you think it's her?"

"Do not jump to conclusions Payolo, all good detective..."

"Must take every possibility into account, yeah I know. But what other suspect do we have?"
Payolo didn't want to believe that the nun was the culprit, she scratched her head at this question, but couldn't find an answer.
While she was thinking, Noir threw a newspaper at her. She started reading, but the shy voice of the little girl cut her off.

"Can you... Read out loud please? I... Don't know how to read..."

"Oh, of course!" Said the assistant enthusiastically.
"Lucien Fox versus Neige Chance: The match of the decade turned into a nightmare for the fans. The most hyped boxing match of the last few years turned sour, as Neige was thought to be the winner with his incredible speed, everyone was surprised that he got demolished by his rival. They later found that the boxing gloves of Lucien weren't up to code, and were tampered to cause heavy damage. Neige probably won't be able to fight again, all because of the heavy injury on his arm."

"The match was the first of October." Precised Noir. "Don't you think this Neige would want revenge for having his dreams of being a boxer shattered?"

"Isn't he at the hospital now? I would think he would be under surveillance."

"I think a boxer could stay up late just to get his revenge. The hospital's staff probably won't."

The assistant thinks for a while, before questioning Noir again.

"A nun and a boxer, anyone else that's suspect?"

"Probably a lot more, he had a lot of people who wanted him dead, probably more than people who wanted him alive. But it's all I've got so far, we should probably go see this boxer at the hospital, but we'd also need to get the autopsy report at the police station, it could prove itself useful."

"You think they'd give you the autopsy report?" Asked the assistant, already knowing that the police would never help them.

"I know someone who could help us, but it's not going to be easy. It's on the way to the hospital anyway, so we might as well drop there to see the suspect."
Noir didn't even finish his sentence or his coffee that he was ready to go outside already.
Payolo quickly put her vest back on before giving a glance at the little girl.

"Should we take Amagy with us?" She asked gently to the detective.

"The car has more than two seats, I don't really mind either way."

Amagy followed them, unsure whether she should have or not. The three of them made their way to the car, but the moment the engine of the vehicle started, the girl started to shake and block her ears.
Seeing the distress she was feeling, the assistant put her hand on her and asked her gently.
"Are you okay?"
To which the girl answered.

"Yes... It's fine... It's over now..."

The rest of the trip was still hard for the girl, but they ended up at the hospital safely.
Noir looked at his watch, before taking an annoyed tone.

"9 am, I hope he's awake, I don't want to have to come back here later."

The Three of them made their way to the hospital. After making sure they could visit him, they made their way to Neige's room. In front of them could be the culprit behind the murder, with the same blank and cold expression that he usually has, Noir opened the room, determined to uncover the truth.
