Chapter 1: New house, new start

"I have a really good feeling about this one you know" said Kanan while driving. Ezra kept looking outside the window. The first houses could be seen on the horizon. The city of Lothal was not far away. Their new home.

"I think this will be the last time we move" continued Kanan trying to get Ezra's attention.

Ezra turned his head to look at him. A sad smile formed on his face as he looked straight at his father's tired eyes. He remembered all the night shifts his father had to take, all the work he had to do, all that trouble. For him.

"You will be going in a great school. Lothal High is one of the better private schools I know" Kanan kept going, trying to get an answer from his son. He knew Ezra did not have a proper childhood. Having to worry about bills and money, moving from city to city, not being able to have real friends. Sometimes Kana felt like he was letting his son down, he knew that he could not give him as much as other parents but...

"I think it's perfect" Ezra answered turning his head at the window yet again. "Our new home" he added quietly. Kanan smiled as a warm feeling of mixed love and pride welled up on him.

Time skip

Ezra and Kanan had gotten their things from the car with ease, since they were only carrying two suitcases.
After moving from town to town all the time, they had learned to not carry much.

"So, I guess that's it" Kanan said looking at the huge, not very well maintained block of flats. Kanan sighed, he wished he could give Ezra something more than that but, then again, this was not the worst place they had ever had to live in.

Ezra picked up immediately his father's change of mood.

"I bet it's better from the inside. After all, you've taught me to never judge a book by its cover. Right?" Ezra said with an encouraging smile. Kanan smile back at him and side hugged him as they walked in.

They got in the elevator and pressed the button for the 12th floor. They passed a couple of doors and they reached theirs.

"Ready?" Kanan said before turning the keys. Ezra nodded and Kanan turned the keys. The apartment wasn't much but, it was all they could afford. Kanan sighed again. He wish he could give Ezra more. But, once again, Ezra managed to cheer him up.

"You know" he said "With a little bit of paint and some furniture, this place has potential"

Kanan smiled.
"Yeah, I think you're right" he said hugging Ezra and placing a hard kiss on his forehead. "I think I know just the way to make this place feel like home. We should unpack"

"What? We literally just walked in!" Ezra complained making Kanan chuckle.

"Don't make me say it again young man"

Ezra opened his suitcase taking Kanan by surprise. "He must be tired" I thought. "There is no other explanation. He's either tired or....wait.....oh no"

Ezra grabbed some of his clothes throwing them at him and started jumping around.

"You have to get me first!"

"Ezra!" Kanan half shouted-half laughed as he ran after him. He chased him throughout the small apartment while they were throwing clothes at each other. They had to stop though when the neighbors started bagging at the walls.

Ezra and Kanan laughed so hard we fell down. Ezra even had a tear of joy rolling down his face which Kanan whipped with my thumb. He wrapped his arm around Ezra's shoulder. The boy leaned into him and Kanan relished this moment, knowing that now that Ezra was growing up those moment would become more and more seldom.

After a long moment of comfortable silence Ezra raised his head to look at me. "I should probably clean up my mess"

"You probably should but, why to ruin such a fun night?"

"Does that means what I hope it does?" Ezra asked his smile widening.

"Are you up for an 'Unpacking Challenge'?" He asked chuckling, remembering the game that Kanan had made up when Ezra was five, to make the constant moving a smoother process.

"You dare to challenge me to an 'Unpacking Challenge' old man?"

"I'm 28 and yes" he answered as jumped up and ran to his suitcase.

"Already ahead of you!" Kanan shouted and grabbed a bunch of his clothes and rushed to my room while hearing Ezra's footsteps echoing in the small apartment. After another fit of laughter and neighbors bagging the walls, we dropped in the couch, exhausted.

Kanan got up and made my way to the small kitchen, right across the couch. There was a small plastic table with two chairs on the side of it.

"Look at the great table where we will be eating the delicious food I will be making" he said sitting in one of I chairs.

"Dad, you don't cook" Ezra said, his eyes closed and his head leaning back.

"Then look the great table where we will be eating the delicious food we order"

"Right" he said yawning. Kanan huffed and made his way to the couch and helped Ezra up and walked him to his bed.

He tucked him in and brushed his hair out of his face.

"Remember the time you were working as a pizza delivery guy and one day I found one of the menus of the pizza restaurant you were working?"

"You were barely five, how can you possibly remember that?" Kanan asked cupping his cheek and doing small circles on it with my thumb. Ezra had grown up so much since then that Kanan could barely believe it.

"I saw a picture of a pizza and I told you I really wanted to have one but, it was too expensive and you couldn't afford it" he mumbled, Kanan could see that he was fighting to stay awake.

He sighed for what seemed like the thousandth time today. Of course he remember. They were in such a bad spot that  they couldn't even afford a pizza. Then again it was an Italian restaurant, not a crappy pizza place across the street. All their prices were high and Kanan was sure that if he ever sat there to eat he wouldn't even be able to afford the bread sticks. Still, he mentally scolded himself for not being able to do more for the boy. For not giving him the childhood he deserved.

"So, in my birthday, at the end of your shift when a guy ordered that pizza you volunteer to deliver it but, you brought it home instead. You put some candles in the pizza and you made it look like a cake. We ate pizza and saw a movie with pirates at the small TV we used to own when we were living back in Kansas. It was the best birthday I ever had. Until the next morning, when your boss found out and you got fired" Ezra said his eyes closing.

"Ezra...I...I'm so sorry" Kanan tried to apologize but, how? Having pizza and watching TV in their small apartment was the ideal birthday for him back then. While other children had birthday cakes, and presents and parties with their friends, what did he had? Nothing.

Before Kanan could apologize any further, Ezra jumped up hugging me. It was so sudden that Kanan almost fell off the bed. He quickly wrapped my arms around him as he felt him shaking.

"Hey, it's okay buddy, it's okay, I'm here"

"That was the day I realized that you would do anything for me. This is why it was the best birthday I ever had. Because from that day on, I knew, I knew you would always be there for me. And I was right. I know sometimes you feel like you need to give me more but, I already have everything I need. I have you!" Ezra said letting go and laying back down. Kanan smiled at him feeling better than he had ever since before they decided to move here. He took Ezra's hand in his.

"Thank you Ezra. I have everything I need too. I have you. And I don't need anything else"

The man placed a hard kiss on his son's forehead and turned off the light closing the door as he walked out. Before he go back to his room he stopped for a little, keeping his ear stretched.  The boy's slow breathing and soft snoring could be heard by the other side of the door.

Kanan walked to his room relieved. He changed into his pajamas and laid on the bed, undoing his ponytail. Maybe this could really be a new start.
