The Social Experiment
Percy Jackson hadn't been involved in anything. He was just chill-laxing in the corner of his cabin, laying in his super awesome Finding Nemo themed bean bag. He was just lying on his back, holding his iPhone in the air (He had almost dropped it in his face a couple of times), scrolling through social media and occasionally laughing at dumb TikToks and memes.
The following event had taken place during the height of summer, the part where people were either still playing video games in their locked bedrooms or enjoying the paradise of staying somewhere away from home where you could see new sights and have new experiences.
Percy was one of the few people who didn't exactly, per say, go on a vacation. Instead, he stayed at Camp Half-Blood, fending off monsters who dared to venture near his camp's borders. The camp he was staying at was unlike any other summer camp—That is unless you believe that a camp with occupants that are of godly parentage or have some sort of connection to Greek gods or goddesses, then yeah. It was pretty much like any other camp.
Camp Half-Blood was the safest place for people like him. Demigods. Demigods were half mortal and half god or goddess children. That's right. Greek gods or goddesses sometimes wondered in the mortal world and fell in love with humans. Then all of a sudden, poof! Out came a clueless demigod child that had no idea of the power hidden within themselves. No idea about who their dad or mom could be.
That was the best way Percy could explain it.
That day was supposed to be a break from all the monster killing and activities that had to do with the life of a half-blood. It was supposed to be normal. It was supposed to be like the day of a person who didn't have the fate of the entire mortal world (that didn't know a thing about the danger their lives could be in) on their shoulders.
You could imagine how enjoyable doing that job could be.
Don't get him wrong; saving the world sounded cool and all that, but most people didn't understand the danger and misfortune behind it. You'd think that people would feel the tiniest bit of sympathy towards people who had to endure under the pressure of knowing that if they made even a little mistake, lives could be at risk. Wait, no. Scratch that. Lives were always at risk.
Percy had survived the second Giant War, the war against Gaea and some of her children. She was basically the earth itself. She had been in a sleep like state for more than thousands of years. A prophecy produced by the Oracle of Delphi lead seven chosen demigods through a series of hardships and complications, including Percy himself.
"The seven," as they were called, were a variety of demigods that had different parents. The seventh included Annabeth Chase, daughter of Athena, Leo Valdez, son of Hephaestus, Piper McLean, daughter of Aphrodite, Jason Grace, son of Jupiter, Hazel Levesque, daughter of Pluto, Nico di Angelo, son of Hades, and of course, Perseus Jackson, son of Poseidon.
At Camp Half-Blood, there were cabins that had a Greek god or goddess as their patron. A demigod's parents were the key factor of deciding which cabin a half-blood would remain in. For example, since Percy's father was Poseidon, he would reside in Poseidon's cabin, Cabin 3.
Leo Valdez had inherited his father's talent of handling machines. He somehow managed to make adjustments to your average iPhone, so that if you used it, the signal it emitted would be discreet and not attract any monsters by using the boundaries of camp to his advantage. By disguising the signal, it would seem like it was actually the scent of another monster, roaming near by.
Something different about his cabin disturbed Percy. He slowly lowered his phone and rose up from his position. Most of his demigod friends were staring at him. Dead silence was in the atmosphere. Percy, being the oblivious guy he was, broke it.
"Um, so why are you guys all staring at me like that?"
Annabeth face palmed at his actions. Travis and Connor Stoll, sons of Hermes, grinned. They were especially mischievous and liked to pull numerous pranks on their fellow peers.
"We just want you to. . . participate in a social experiment," they both said in a creepy unison.
Percy gave them a strained smile. What had he gotten himself into? "What kind of social experiment?"
"Well, we-kinda-sorta-maybe-dared-Annabeth-and-you-to-participate-in-a-social-experiment-where-you-would-go out-into-camp-acting-all-couple-y-and-stuff-and-pretend-you-guys-were-a-couple-so-we-could-record-their-reactions," Travis said in a quick breath.
"I'm sorry, what?" Percy questioned, incredulously. "Uh-uh. No way am I doing that."
Grover, Percy's best friend since the age of twelve, bowed his head and looked to the wooden floor. He was a satyr. His horns peeked out of his curly hair, and he had the wisp of a goatee on his chin. "Sorry, Perce. This isn't your dare, and you can't back down, so you have to do it."
The demigods looked, knowingly, at Annabeth. They knew that she wasn't one to back down from a dare. Annabeth's cheeks flared with embarrassment. Her grey eyes were filled with determination and something else. Her honey blonde hair bounced as she marched towards Percy, forcing him to stand up from his chair by the arm.
"C'mon, Seaweed Brain," Annabeth said, breathlessly. "Let's do this."
~~~
"I can't believe you're making me do this," Percy grumbled under his breath as he walked to the Mess Hall, holding hands with Annabeth.
"Oh, just shut up, Seaweed Brain. Deal with it," Annabeth retorted.
Percy made sure to keep their tightly clasped hands out of view of most of the campers, so it wouldn't be more embarrassing than it already was. He had to stop himself from wiping his sweaty hands on his shorts.
"Do I really have to hold your hand?" Percy complained as the approached the entrance.
"Then what?" Annabeth replied. "Would you rather be
That shut him up. As soon as Percy could smell a whiff of the fluffy pancakes being served in the hall, he immediately untangled their fingers from each other's and ran straight to the food. Annabeth watched as he did. His trademark smile was enough to win anybody's heart over. His green eyes lit up as he dug into his breakfast. She quickly tore her gaze away from him before anybody could have noticed.
She quickly sat down at her usual seat at her assigned table with the rest of her half siblings. The Mess Hall had a bunch of wooden, picnic like tables for each demigods that were born under the same godly parent. Above the tables was a roof that usually had tendrils of little flowers and lichen hanging from it. There was also a small podium that was located in the back where campers could give speeches and the sorts.
It wasn't much, but all the same, campers considered the camp their second home. Annabeth picked at her waffles, moving it and poking it with her fork. Her stupor was interrupted when a voice whispered into her ear. A familiar one at that.
"Guess what, Annabeth?" Annabeth immediately recognized the voice to be Percy's.
"What?"
Percy was sitting right next to her, fidgeting with his hands. "Well, I asked Chiron if we could sit at the same table. It would really sell the whole couple thing. Plus, we can hang out with each other more."
"Wouldn't it be super awkward?"
Percy nodded in response. "Yeah, so that's why I asked Chiron if our other friends could sit with us too!"
A few seconds later (probably one second because all most all of their friends zoomed to Cabin 3's table all at once), Annabeth, Percy, and all of their other friends from their game of Truth or Dare that morning. They all curiously looked at the shy pair of infuriatingly dense idiots that had their eyes glued on their breakfast plates, holding hands underneath the table.
It was like the sixth grade all over again (except for the fact that they were really still sixteen year olds and that still dreaded going to school after the summer was over). They weren't even doing anything remotely couple-y.
Percy was staring intently at his lap. He abruptly stood up from the wooden table. His eyes widened in realization. He placed his face in his hands.
"I can't believe I forgot! I have a sword training class to teach! Shoot, I better go!" Percy said, bolting out of the pavilion.
They all looked after Percy, chuckling lightly under their breath. Annabeth didn't want to be caught looking for too long again, so she fixed her gaze on the book in her lap. As soon as Percy was out of their sight, they transferred their penetrating gazes on her. She squirmed, feeling uncomfortable with all of the attention.
She cleared her throat. "Don't you all have better things to do than poke your noses in other people's business?"
All the campers knew that she was just trying to cover up her embarrassment, but they went back to eating their food anyway.
~~~
"Oh, come on! Is that really all you've got?"
"You haven't seen nothing yet, Seaweed Brain."
Percy leaned over to help Annabeth up off the ground. They had been sparring with their swords for the past hour. They both had chose to use training swords.
"You're really out of practice, Wise Girl."
Annabeth chuckled, brushing the dirt off of her shorts. "I don't exactly practice using a sword everyday. We have you to do that. I have a better idea than just sword training all day."
"And that is?" Percy asked, curiosity filling his voice.
A sly grin appeared on Annabeth's face. "We duel, a fight as you will. It'll be a good experience that'll teach the campers in your sword class how a real fight looks like, and we'll be evenly matched. What do you say?"
A matching smile also appeared on Percy's face. "I'm all for it."
(A/N: I don't know why I'm updating so much. I started this one shot some time ago and just finished. Hope you like it I guess. Baii.)
