The Words of the Medium
Away from carnage beast had wrought the man and boy do go
To town where child did current live and seer at present bodes
The only help in all the land against that dreadful beast
Whose grant a way of coming wrath of fox to current see.
They wind across the ancient hold and seek what things she'll say
To find if any words she gives might help the creature slay.
From far away he village sees that lays among the hills
And presses on at faster past his quest to soon fufill
Into the town the pair do go to serfdoms great alarm
To see a man of higher state by law allowed to harm
Those lower station grant by birth by fickle hand of chance
Not given way to better selves or change their lowly stance.
But warrior heeds no mind to folk for man in midst was raised
Of poorer kind of folk as such as ones who stand in way
So on he goes and pays no mind to any ling'ring stares
Resenting heart against these serf's not thing he current dares
And ever on does press the ground as boy does lead the way
Unto the shack where seer at present time does current lay.
They reach the door and lonely linger as boy his courage gains
To enter room of obscure seer perhaps to certain pain.
But in he pressed for sake of man and request he made at length
To take the warrior down to one who sure could lend him strength
And tell the man of chance to gain a hold above his foe
Along with way to wage with sword a battle very bold.
To side he lay his master's box that hold the elders bone
That man had sat about to take on journey long alone
Preparing self to meet the seer inside this meager hold
In hopes that such might help the man attain his goal.
Inside they go to shroud of smoke that blots the sight from eyes
So none who first do enter room yet anything espy.
But slowly eyes of both do turn and quick correct his stare
That shows the rest of home that's made unto the questing pair.
In center sat of middle age a woman ancient made
Although no mark that laid on form did make that elder claim
Instead the air that hang about of distant past now spoke
Of deeds yet done and tales yet told and stories long yet wrote.
Upon her face by smoke ensconced her eyes remained unstirred
A sight they caused them both to pause as words she spoke unnerved.
"Ancient whispers fill my hearing telling tale of man a nearing
Warrior proud on quest a veering, wants my lore of ages old
Mystic weighs the sword you carry making heart to grow yet wary
Sent upon this task to tarry long though thing's to great and bold
Careful blade you keep is lying leading man to fate that's dying
Time that steel has long been biding puffing up a warrior's pride..."
Then warrior hearing words she spoke did backwards hasty wend
Surprised that women knew so much of man that chance did send
Yet felt relief that still the one he's current sent to seek
Of future times and things to come does truly present speak.
Before her man does lowly bow and ask the seers truth
And bids that woman grants him quest by speaking fabled sooth.
"I've heard you speak your sooth and of future times do tell
Of things yet undone by men and of sights their eyes have yet beheld.
Your magic words and ways are proven by thing you knew
Of sword I hold that's wrought by an ancient anvil hewed.
Now come I down to speak and of woman's lore to ask
That seer might grant a way that this man completes his task
To slay that beast that is held in this land from a distant time
And of an ancient working way that some weakness man might find
That lets him lay his hand on that beast of the many tails
Succeeding where many men have tried before and failed.
Yet speak you now and fear that's new inside my heart does grow
And stress I never knew before in mind has taken hold.
For long this blade I trusted though gained from untrustful being
Yet sets this medium offends with a thing you say your seeing.
Of steel betraying man to his death in his time of need
Tell me now of both these things so the warrior sure may heed."
Then seer spoke at man's request and bid him know her words
That long the man by any king or friends was left unheard.
"Heart's the thing that man's betraying granting pride while blades allaying
All the fears of mortal slaying, gave by sword he current keeps
None about that man a speaking grant you well a word of keeping
Turning man from death he's seeking all for sake of steal he heaps.
Sword without a whisper's telling, things that work to man's own failing
All your deeds no matter hailing, even if your work be small.
Pride does send you out to battle, out to places sabers rattle
Guiding man like dogs do cattle, on to greater dangers call.
Time will come the battle thrumming beating loud like hateful drumming
Chords of fun'ral harp a strumming such will lay your fabled grave.
Granted well by thing to thrilling, task to great the man a killing
Tears that's shed by love a willing, still the warring man won't save."
Now hearing words the man's unnerved and feels it's sinking truth
But still he pushes past such fear refusing current soothe.
For blade he holds he treasures deep from time that long had passed
A thousand birds was man's own keep he won in slaying task.
And even though the truth she said's bespoke by other works
Still man would wield this blade he kept yet even still to hurt.
So quick though seed of fear is plant he seek to turn aside
And other thing he present wants from woman tries to find.
"Then speak when blade betrays so man undoes it's wrong
And works against it's magic will though it's will be strong.
To know the goal it seeks allays my fear of death
Of time to soon and young for man of life to be bereft.
This tools to great foe me to leave rejecting all it grants
Though thing may seem to serf but a deed that's very scant."
And seer when hearing words then spoke in calm but angry voice
Electing still to tell the truth of man's own foolish choice
Her face as dark a night now fell and words like sap from tree
Now rang about the ears of both in hopes his heart to grieve."
"Heart of man remains unyielding hard against my hopes of healing
Many years your choice be stealing far from lotted living days
Blade alone for death is given, all to task that force is bidden
Task from mortal eyes yet hidden, deep in ancient obscure ways
Sword's already worked betrayal setting man on task to fail
Single moment makes not gale but all the storming winds
Come to rest on mortal shoulders, curse will make you grow yet bolder
Till you body lies yet colder, bent by will refused to bend.
Lay aside the blade a gifting, thing for warrior's seldom fitting
Come about by thing a witching magic old and very foul."
But anger grant by seer rebuffed not will in warrior's heart
With blade he long had held the man refused to part,
And lay the saber far away for distant coming time
For other men in future days to come and surely find.
Instead he turned his mind to task he came about to know
And bid them woman think not long on saber man does hold.
"To know of future moment when my blade betrays my will
Would help my path and working to ever high fufill.
But the day of distant coming I deliberate fail to heed
If no single time the spoken can turn about my need.
So speak no more of blade or the help you think I need
And only talk to man of his sought for killing deed.
The way the fox that hurt the land may yet surely die
By hand of living man the prophecy gave defy."
Then woman scoffed at words he spoke resenting thing he seeks
But still to task of warring man she starts again to speak
And tells the man of daunting thing at present aspired
How work that man has deign to take for mortal men's too dire.
"Goal that warrior's present seeking lends a worth to seer's own greeting
Granting sign of life that's fleeting, granting medium solid proof
All the words you come a chasing, grant's what's only death a hast'ning
Pride the mind of man's abasing, still he stays yet great aloof.
Hand of none among the living, death to beast be ever giving
Though the task their solemn bidding, still this goal you ever seek
Such the thing you've sought be showing, heart of man with boldness growing
Past the point of skillful knowing, man might danger deftly meet."
Then warrior once again aspired with forceful falling voice
To bid the seer to answer give and make a diff'rent choice.
"The days of kitsune's reign are a plague on the whole of land
But by words of ancient seers have their works and efforts banned
Yet failed to raise against it or end it's gruesome reign
Though many men would aid and their curving blade yet deign.
Except for sake of words that the seer at present does speak
That any living person is bidden their death to meet.
No other aid you grant them or another sign do give
That shows a way to victory and the death of beast to bid
I ask again this warring question for the last of times we'll speak
May this man yet end this creature and death of head yet meet?"
Again she says the same as said and deigns not grant the man
A word to send him on to death as man himself had planed
For none could kill that fabled beast from days of ancient old
Though heart was hard and steal was sharp and both had grown yet cold
To temper selves against it's winds it wields as fabled tails
Yet every living man a born was doom to ever fail.
"Go from home of seer now talking far from place be gone a walking
Seer forever still is balking granting little things your wanting
Time will tell the truth of telling way that man by pride a swelling
Goes to death by death a failing, 'gainst that creature's dreadful daunting."
With words now spoke the man arose and turn to take his leave
Of words yet give by fortune teller man did greatly grieve,
But turned not far from task he took and still did onward press
His heart was stay to slay the beast a thousand birds to test.
He takes his masters bone in cart and wanders little ways
Behind the man the peasant boy beside the warrior stays.
Now fearing soldiers train of thought the way he'll try to seek
A death on head of beastly fox to try and present meet.
So boy did quickly tell his thoughts to warring man now bold
In hopes that any hasty act the child may put at hold.
"To tell the future's ancient craft
That comes from times of distant past.
And wells perfected over years
To speak to men of things they fear
And warnings give that men should heed
To steer away for certain deeds.
I bid you friend to think on words
That man by ancient seer has heard.
And find a diff'rent path to take
We folk have learned to live with fate
And feel so little dread in heart
By danger gave by fox's part."
But man rebuffs the words of boy and speaks again to tell
Of thing that only newer eyes of older state beheld
Can ever know of understand thus granting man his will
To go about and fox to hunt with great intent to kill.
"But dread you did feel on the road when the boy did come to man
And tried to save my life from the beast that haunts this land.
You mistake the constant dread with which you've learn to live
With having none in heat a fate so cruel to bid.
On head of all this land and the meager folk inside
Must they live their life so that dread may always bide
Inside their heart no great reprieve their ever grant
A peace that others take for little you are given so scant.
That fox deserves it's death and will meet it still in end
By the blade I wield though the blade be cursed a victory I'll win
And prove I've bent the thing the magic held as charm
When beast I slay I'll end a put to highest harm."
So boy did falter hearing word the man in haste had spoke
But feared yet still that time will come when tacit promise broke
By ancient saber held by side would grant the warrior death
His life by fox yet stolen fast his folk yet left bereft.
The child does start to speak again but hears an ancient gong
That sounds aloud the whole of town like warning wrote as song.
And every peasant starts to rush and sweep to seer's home
A crowding flood of peasants come and hasty quick do hone
Their teeming numbers down to house that medium long did live
To hear what warning woman gave to crowd she present bid.
And man and boy reluctant join returning slow to place
Not given well as first they came to go a quickened pace
But still yet drawn to know the words that woman's quick to speak
So men may know the craft she hones and things she present seeks.
And close they drew beholding woman standing 'bove the mass
As eye atop the whole of crowd she current warried cast.
Then spoke and told the folk their doom the coming storm that falls
Atop the whole of land that's wide on every place that sprawls.
"Come I grant our dread a knowing, vision's come our doom showing
Bright with lights a sight a glowing, granting well a sudden end
Fox's wrath that comes a falling, on this land so wide and sprawling
Tells of death that comes a call, just a pair of days to wend.
Gather close we must yet muster, far away from town to cluster
Else our lives will lose their luster, coming swift to early close."
And all the mass when hearing words began to whisper loud
The silent sound of everyone but added on by crowd
Until a roar that fearful cries had ripped across the whole
Now knowing fox on top their land had set their death as goal.
But loud again the medium cries to quiet silent call
In hopes the panic spreading fast her words might help to stall.
"Mountains high above us lying Like a pillar skyward rising
Bids the place we soon be striving far along our hold.
Tarry short becoming ready days ahead are great and heady
Till we high on mount be steady safe from wrath below.
Go about your chore of choosing things to keep and thing a losing
Though the task is great abusing on the heart of meager folk
Still our only chance is leaving, leaving land we love a grieving
Far away from beast a heeding work the words your seers spoke."
And soon the whole of mass depart to gather quick their things
That folk into the mountain holds do hope to hiding bring.
And all do leave the front of house except the boy and man
The latter eye's did glimmer bright and spoke of hasty plan.
Upon his blade he laid his hands and glaring eye do meet
The medium's eye's now also hard and words he start to speek.
"With not but aid of sword I'll go and meet my task
To slay the Kitsune dead as Bushido's code does ask,
And not from help the medium's give though help her folk would serve
But solely by the code I'm give that stills my fabled nerve."
Then man does turn and leave that place to stay the rest of day
Along with next and meet at night the fox he's bid to slay.
Hey what do you think of the fortune teller!!!
