The Outskirts of Tori No Su
Read in landscape!!!
Now deep in night the boy did steal from home he shortly made
On out to world from hold he kept from nest he briefly made,
And went across the rolling lands not long but far for boy
Not knowing many other folk had failed this very ploy.
Nor effort people need to make to live in world so wide
Where even men yet grown have failed their bodies downward lied.
Yet still he onward went from town to country laid so green,
The light of moon that shone so bright the thing by which it's seen.
Till boy did find a place to rest where child may lay his head
Inside a shrub that hides his form and eased this night his dread.
So boy now deftly hides in place in hopes it shelter gives
That child in great and wilder lands at least a night may live.
So down he lays uneasy felt beneath a leafy veil
In hopes to live to see the day so tale the boy could tell.
Now off he drifts on bed of grass his pack beneath his head
Though strange unkept the place that boy had chose to use as bed.
Uneasy sleep now came and went for child who held his peace,
And back and forth in rest he laid with very little ease.
Uncomely sights now haunted boy who deep in slumber rest
Of ancient woes in Nihon's land who came his will to test.
Yet long the morning came to pass and boy began to rise
Though little rested up he set as sun did greet his eyes.
He dust his clothes and took his path again on journey set
With only vaguest will he owned he still does onward get.
For boy does know he's born outside his proper place and role
To find a station child can serve is current highest goal.
So over hills from village far his legs do current walk
At dangers found inside these land the boy refused to balk.
Though owning neither skill nor tools he needs to brave this place
Still on does go the little boy at hastened charging pace,
But after time his feet do hurt and brief he rest his load
Though ever far from warring ways his heart does present goad.
On side of hill he stops to rest before his pack he takes
There looking down at all he owns what things may help his fate.
But sudden sounds of children's play from other side of hill
Does cause the boy from chore to pause, his heart by noise was stilled.
He crouched yet low from pack on ground and gazed then over plain
To see what things on child's head the will of fate does deign.
Below the boy do children play from farmer's village come
Their laughing giggling makeshift ways now sounding loud like drum.
For long in wonder child does look at thing he's never done
For seldom playful leisure's grant, for warrior's way's not fun.
Yet still an envy creeps inside a want to join them all,
And journey down to place where children laugh and play and sprawl.
So up he raises self from ground to wend his way to rest
Of children playing many games where leisure seemed at best.
So down from slope he trotting came to greet them all at play,
And met them lot and joined with group for most the rest of day
For many hours children played till sun was high in sky
In hidden plain where great they bide for current place and time.
They labor hard at easy things as children alway do,
And pass the time till finally day then came to hour of noon.
Then down from village came a group of older boys to place
With fury painted over face and stepping quick in haste.
Between their kin and kingly child they formed a daunting line
With fearsome stance that spoke of rage at oddly sight they find.
Then out from midst the tallest came his arms were tightly crossed,
And up to princeling's face he went his will to boy accost.
"Who yet comes to our folk and does seek from our hand?
But a welpling who's born of the Samurai clan.
With no ranking or honor preserving his place
When the rest of our kinsmen the rascal does grace?
Is not station too high to our company seek
Is our rank not too lowly and humble and meek?
For a boy who was born as a prince of this land
Who before us as peasant does currently stand?"
And hearing tone that leader took the boy did backwards draw
Now fearing great the many foes before his eyes that sprawled.
Though forms they bore were still of child's they taller stood than rest,
And flanked them all and held their line of foelike friends abreast.
Yet still in heart he courage found to speak his peace to foe
To plead his case before the child forestalling short his woe.
"But many other children played
Before to vale you made your way
And never any raised concern
Or wants of boy did try to spurn.
Who grants you lordship over host?
What right to lead does boy yet boast?"
But never easy turned aside the elder child did stand
Before his foe with tightened fist and very wicked plan.
He looked on all the children stood with evil glint in eye
That spoke of hurt they sure would face if any told his lie.
Then back to boy with grin on face he made a snarky sound
That spoke of very cunning plan the youth had surely found.
To turn aside his vaunted goal to make these folk his friends,
Thus quick those anxious pleading wants this churlish ploy would end.
"Not I child who does take from you goal that you seek,
But our customs that samurai's failed to yet meet.
For not one in our midst does at present yet stand
Who has failed to yet pass what's the test of our clan."
Now hearing words that foe did speak the child did think for long,
Perhaps there truly laid some path unknowing boy'd forgone.
So quick he straightens self to seek from child his fated test
Not knowing well the plan of foe's a wicked way to best
The child and turn aside his want by granting task to bold,
For even aged warring man a task that's seldom told.
"Then grant the task the test I'll take
And meet your custom well by fate
So boy may join the vaunted clan
Of children playing in this land."
Then grinning cruel the older child did motion forth his hand,
And bid the former warrior heir to follow cross the land.
And seeing pair the rest did come now bearing well in tole
To see for selves what test and task the older boy did goad.
For none amidst their many rank was ever custom bid
Nor any child had ever 'fore been any trial give.
Yet still they all did act as such to turn aside the wrath
They knew for certain older boy on head of all would cast.
If any ever dare to speak revealing well his ploy
Or try to hide and warning give to little noble boy.
So on did every child yet walk though bearing heavy feet
Not knowing well the thing he wants or task he grants as feat.
For long they wandered on their way now far from village home
On roadless paths with shoeless feet did all the children roam.
Across again that foreign land the boy was forced to trek
His will was small but still he went to try and win the bet,
And claim for self a place among the other children stood
In hopes he'll gain for self a folk through trial bid as good,
And after lengthy walk they stop as leader raises hand
To bid the other children close to learn his vaunted plan
To top of hill he raises fast and dives beside the crest
Then points to boy he brought along to hear his great behest.
So child does go to top of hill his will was still unbroke
Until he saw the trial gave that older boy bespoke.
Below them tribe of oni stood as tall as many men
Their skin was red and hair was dark with jutting fangs that rend
Through snarling mouth and twisted face that's darting yellowed eyes
Did open wide and look around to see what prey they spied.
Their sinew bulged beneath their flesh deforming creatures' face
And filled with dread the living things that met their warrior race
With hefty clubs the size of trees they stalked yet too and fro
Across the hidden dwelling vale the beast had made abode.
A tiger pelt for loin cloth and horns that jut through mane
There showed that even over beast those dreadful creatures reigned.
"Now behold our custom you samurai boy
What's the thing you must do so our clan you may join.
I do bid you enrage with your actions and taunts
What are beast that this valley for long have yet haunt.
And to lead them enraged from where current they stand,
To the edge of the road is the distance I've planned,
For the bravest amongst us have bidden them more
To a greater a journey for our clannish own chore.
And the greater the distance the more you are brave,
For the journey of oni is test that your gave."
And seeing thing the younger boy in dreadful silence stood
Now knowing chore that's bid of boy is far too hard withstood.
For half a dozen beast at least now tarried far below
And each the size of giant stood to grant the boy his woe.
With trembling form he stayed in place not daring downward climb
Where surely death at hands of beast the little child would find.
With smirking face his rival rose from place beside him laid
Now knowing child would never do the questing chore he bade.
"What a shame you no longer may join with our clan
Or yet play with the others as boy had yet planned
But I fear this is price that you must now yet meet
For the wage of our friendship's performing this feat."
Then off he ran and other children hasty led away
While boy did stay behind and trembled long at beastlike fray.
Not knowing place to go for all the stations tried he failed
The samurai boy again was lost to world so wide and fell.
So after long he moved his feet and turned from task he's grant
To move and onward journey far to salvage hopes so scant.
And farther went the little boy from village master lived
Who great had many task yet grant and many trials give.
And all the rest of day he went dejected more than 'fore
At fact that child had failed to heed the test he's gave as chore
So mind of boy did hard yet work along with rest of form
Till sun did start to fall at night and legs were weary worn.
Beside the road he fell and laid no caution child did heed
For rest his body loudly called and boy did grant it's need
So down on ground he laid not hid from rest of world so wide
Nor guarded well from any eyes that down on plain might pry.
Unknowing slumber body took so nothing bid alarm
Though many great and wild things would seek to do him harm.
For many hours laid he still not roused enough to move
Though great the little knowledge held the little boy behooves.
Then after long with sudden jerk he upward rose from bed
In strangers house he'd never been with heart that's full of dread
Around he looked in hopes to find who took him far from home
And found an elder woman sat by fire pit alone.
