Halloween (excerpted from Chicken's Life) - by Dialuann

"Breakfast is ready!" our Mom called us from downstairs.

We all dashed downstairs to see what our Mom has fixed us on Halloween.

"Mommy! What did you fix us?" an excited Dolly asked.

"Well, your favorite, pumpkin pancakes." our Mom said while pouring syrup onto her pancake.

"Thanks! That'll be so yummy." we all said while jumping up and down.

Guess what! Today is Halloween, my favorite holiday. Halloween is so fun to celebrate, I mean, getting dressed up, trick or treating, and everything is just so fun. I can't wait to wear the best costume! Wait.. I don't have a costume!

"Mommy, I don't have a costume.. and Halloween's today!" I said while getting all nervous.

"Meadow, I thought you and you're siblings all went and bought some?" our Mom asked me confused.

"We did.. but, I didn't know which one to buy," I said while gobbling up the pumpkin pancakes.

"Wait, so none of you bought a costume?" our Mom asked us.

"No.." we all said.

Our Mom sighed. "Well, I guess we're just gonna have to go to the store. But, you know that the thing you probably want will be gone since Halloween's today right?" our Mom asked us all.

"Yeah.. we sadly know," I said while putting my dish away.

"What if there's nothing left?" Etta asked nervously.

"There shouldn't be. Not everyone celebrates Halloween." our Mom said.

"Good. I was getting worried that we wouldn't have a costume." Etta said while taking a deep breath.

"Well, you guys better get down to the store. Everyone closes when trick or treating starts." our Mom said while cleaning up our food.

We all dashed down to our local Halloween store.

"Hi! I'm Mae, and these are my siblings. We're looking forward to buying one of your Halloween costumes from your store." bubbly Mae said.

"Great! Just warning you though that there's not a lot. Yesterday we had a whole pack of chickens come down here." the store clerk said.

"Okay. Thanks for telling us." Mae said.

Me and the rest of my siblings walked down to the costume aisle.

"Okay, so they have a killer clown, a clown, a giant inflatable chicken, a zombie chicken, and a vampire," Mae said while looking around.

"That's not much!" Dolly said while scanning the funny hair wigs.

"Hey, maybe we should make our own costume. That's just as fun as buying one." I said.

"Meadow, you don't take anything seriously," Lavender said while looking at the vampire costume.

"I'm just trying to help," I said.

"Hey, Meadow has I good point. I'm making mine at home." Etta said.

"Thanks, Etta," I said.

"Well, I'm buying a giant inflatable chicken. It looks so funny!" Dolly said while laughing.

"I'm buying a vampire!" Lavender said.

"I'm buying a killer clown!" Mae said.

"..A zombie chicken?" I said while looking strange.

"Meadow, what's wrong?" Mae asked me.

I sighed. "I want us to all wear the same costume like we did last year," I said.

"Meadow, were all pullets now. We're not baby chicks." Mae said.

"I wish we were again. I liked wearing the same costumes," I said while picking the zombie chicken costume off its hook. "But if you guys don't want to—"

Mae sighed while taking the second zombie chicken costume off the hook.

"Fine. We can all wear the same thing if everyone's okay with it. Etta, you can make your own zombie chicken costume." Mae said.

"No. I think I'm fine with buying one. I already made my own candy bag." Etta said while grabbing another zombie chicken costume.

"That'd be fun." Lavender & Dolly both said.

"Okay. We have found our costumes!" Mae said while putting them on the check-out line.

"Okay, that'll be 99 cents please." the store clerk said to Mae.

Mae then put up her 99 cents. The store clerk scanned the costumes while taking the 99 cents out of Mae's hand. Then we all left with 5 zombie chicken costumes.

"I can't wait to tell Mommy what we all got!" Dolly said while skipping on the sidewalk.

"I know!" I said while smiling ear to ear.

Just then, we walked up to "Gary's Haunted House."

"Gary? What are you doing?" Mae asked Gary.

Gary is Mae's kinda friend. Gary and Mae met at our chicken school.

"Well, Mae, I'm working on a haunted house.. and a prop car," Gary said while working on the prop car. "This just can't seem to work," Gary said.

"Well, maybe I can help," Mae said to Gary.

"Mae! You don't even know how to work vehicles.. much less a prop vehicle." I whispered to Mae.

"In my class, I take engineering. I know a couple of things." Mae whispered back to me while walking to the prop car.

I just put my hand over my face and sighed. Mae's gonna fail at this and feel miserable. I mean, I always thought Mae had a crush on Gary.. and if it's true, Mae IS going to feel miserable and humiliated.

"Mommy! Mommy! Look what we bought." I said while practically yelling to our Mom.

"Yes, Meadow?" our Mom asked me.

"Well, just look! Me and my siblings got matching costumes.. zombie chicken matching costumes to be exact." I said while handing our Mom my costume.

"Aw! That's amazing, Meadow! I'm glad you all finally found something." our Mom said to me.

"I know! Well, we're gonna try them on and scare some chickens!" I said while jumping up and down.

"Well, before you all do that, Beatrice and the rest of the chickens are going to a haunted house attraction. The baby chicks and pullets can stay here due to them becoming too scared, but it's their option." our Mom said to me.

"What?! A haunted house! That'll be so cool. Can I come?" I asked.

"If you want to, Meadow. But you're gonna have to ask your siblings if they wanna come too." our Mom said to me.

"Okay!" I said while dashing off to go find my siblings.

"Guys! Guess what." I said while jumping up and down.

"What, Meadow? We're doing a Halloween costume fashion show. It's really fun." Lavender said to me.

"Well, do you want to go to the haunted house attraction with our Mommy and everyone else?" I asked my siblings.

"Sure! I love haunted house attractions.. wait, are you sure it's an attraction and not a real haunted house? Because on Halloween that's when ghosts come out." Lavender asked me with a concerning look.

"Yeah, I think so," I said while handing them the flyer.

"Meadow, you know that Gary is the host at the haunted house right?" Mae asked me.

"Yeah. But you never know, it could be real." I said while looking at Lavender.

"Well, here's our costumes! Meadow, go try yours on." Mae said to me.

I put my zombie chicken costume on and showed everyone.

"Woah! You guys look so realistic." Helena said.

"I want a costume like that!" Fleur said.

"Where did you buy that?" Beatrice asked us.

"I love it!" Rosie said.

"Stunning!" Salem said.

"..Kinda scary.." Clover said.

We got so many compliments, if I read them all, we would waste time on trick-or-treating.

"Attention everyone! Attention!" Beatrice said to us all.

We all looked over to where Beatrice was standing.

"Well, you probably all know that today's Halloween right?" Beatrice asked us all.

We all slowly nodded.

"Well, I'm glad because we're going to a haunted house, doing a costume contest, pumpkin carving, trick or treating, and plenty more! Also, parents, if you don't want your baby chicks and or pullets to go to the haunted house, it's your option. But remember, still leave it up to them." Beatrice said while looking down at each baby chick and pullet.

Once Beatrice was done talking, everyone got dressed up into their costumes and looked like they were ready to go.

"Okay! Well, let's go to the nearby haunted house. Baby chicks and pullets will be watched by my dear friend, Rosie!" Beatrice said while Rosie was gathering the baby chicks and pullets.

It looks like Fleur, Violet, Helena, Salem, Darlene, Sissy, me, my siblings, Clover & 2 more were the baby chicks/pullets going to the haunted house.

"Hi!" a White Hackle said to me.

"Do I know you?" I said while raising an eyebrow.

"Maybe.." they said while smiling ear to ear.

"Well, I'm Jolene! And this is my sister Josephine. Remember, we met at camp Chicken LaFu?" The so-called 'Jolene' said to me.

"Yeah.. I guess.." I said while walking towards the haunted house with everyone.

"Well, then you know me! I'm a vampire for Halloween.. and so is my sister! I'm assuming you and your siblings are zombie chickens?" Jolene asked me.

"Yeah. We all went as zombie chickens." I said.

"Well, good. Me and my sister are going to be trick or treating with your family tonight. My family can't take me because they're the ones hosting the pumpkin carving contest, so, they said me and my sister can go with a friend." Jolene said.

"Yeah, well, it's kinda good because there won't be that big of a line!" Jolene said with a lot of enthusiasm.

Me, Jolene, and Josephine talked the whole time while walking to the haunted house.

"Well, welcome to the haunted house!" Beatrice said while walking us into the haunted house.

As we walked through, many things had frightened us. For example, ghosts, jump scares, killer clowns, and more.

"Meadow! Watch out for that—" Jolene said to me. But it was too late, one of the props that hang from the ceiling popped out in front of me and nearly gave me a heart attack.

"What was that?!" I asked Jolene confused.

"A scary prop. I saw it scare your other sister too.. I think it was Etta." Jolene said to me.

"Josephine! Come on!" Jolene yelled to Josephine.

"Coming! This place is like a corn maze.. but scarier." Josephine said to us.

Once we reached the last exhibit, we saw what frightened us the most.. bugs.. but this time it wasn't any average prop bugs.. they were real.. real spiders and spider webs!

"Ah!" we all screamed as we walked through the exhibit.

"I didn't know these were real!" Jolene said.

"One's on me!" Josephine said while picking it up and placing it on the floor.

I dashed across the whole exhibit while getting a face full of spider webs.

"Meadow!" Jolene & Josephine called after me.

"At least we're done with that one," I said while taking a deep breath.

That exhibit was scary as hay!

Once we were done with the haunted house, we went back to the chicken coop to go ahead and grab our trick-or-treating bags, along with the baby chicks and pullets who didn't come to the haunted house.

"Okay, everyone! Now we're going trick or treating!" Beatrice said while leading us out the chicken coop door.

"First house!" Beatrice said.

This home had cobwebs on it, giant inflatable ghosts, and pumpkins alongside a graveyard and some big bright lights.

I knocked on the door. "Trick or treat!" I said.

The chicken then opened up the door. "Why aren't you all some spooky scary zombie chickens!" the chicken said while looking at me and my siblings.

"Thank you!" the bubbly Mae said.

We all grabbed some pieces of candy and went to the next house. We also said "thank you!" for the candy.

"Second house!" Beatrice said.

We all knocked on the door again. "Trick or treat!" Etta said.

No answer.

"I guess they're not home," Etta said while sighing.

"Boo!" something jumped out from the hedges at us.

We all scurried to our mommy's and daddy's.

"Happy Halloween! Here's some candy!" the chicken said to us all.

We all ran back to grab some delicious, yummy candy. Once we stopped at least 10 houses, we went back to the chicken coop to count our candy.

"34, 35!" I said while counting each of my candy.

"Woah, Meadow! That's a lot." Dolly said to me. I just started to smile ear to ear.

"Well, are we all ready for the pumpkin carving contest?" Beatrice asked us all.

"Yeah!" we all shouted while jumping up and down.

"Okay, well, baby chicks and pullets can not carve their pumpkin. Even if we are using the safest knife ever, someone will still probably get hurt. So, only parents or older chickens can carve. The baby chicks and pullets will draw and design the pumpkin any way they want. If we see a baby chick and or a pullet carving their pumpkin, we will disqualify you." The Leader of the Flock said.

Yes, the "Chicken Safe Safety Knife" is the safest knife in history, but still, you never know what those baby chicks and/or pullets could do with that knife though.

"Aright, begin!" Beatrice shouted out.

My pumpkin was a bat, Dolly's pumpkin was a vampire, Etta's pumpkin was a coffin, Mae's pumpkin was an original pumpkin face, and Lavender's pumpkin was a circus clown. And yes, it was pretty hard for our Mom to carve our pumpkins but at least no one got hurt!

"Alright everyone, we have looked at all of your pumpkins so we know who the winners are!" The Leader of the Flock said to us all.

"Okay, third place is Waylon!" Beatrice announced while putting a sash on Waylon.

"Now, second place is Meadow!" Beatrice announced while putting a sash on me.

I started to smile ear to ear! I never knew that my pumpkin design was this good!

"Now, first place is.. drumroll please.." Beatrice cleared her throat. "Clover!" Beatrice announced while putting a sash on Clover!

Clover started to jump all around the place with joy!

Once the pumpkin carving contest was over, I congratulated Waylon and Clover for being third and first place. Once I was done talking to them, I went over to the fireplace and started to party with the other chickens. I ate caramel apples, hot chocolate, and more! It was so fun, I'll never in a million years forget that night!

"Today was so fun!" Fleur said to me.

"Okay everyone, here's pumpkin pie!" Beatrice said while placing the pumpkin pie on the center of the table.

"Yay!" everyone said while getting a slice.

Yummy! I love Beatrice's pumpkin pie! Today is going to be a great and fun rest of the night.

Happy Halloween, Readers!
