90 days to love - Chapter 5
The white door slides closed as we slip into the open. The Rex stands at the edge of the balcony with his back to us. The cool breeze raises the hair on my arms and I snuggle closer to Jared's warmth. His body shudders and immediately drops me on a white garden couch.
"I told you not to move." Jared hisses. I frown up at him.
"The outside is beautiful is it not?" The Rex calls from brink of the white terrace. He turns round and points at the night sky behind him. The moon is huge, beaming in its white glory. The constellations of stars fill the bluey-black sky and twinkle. I gasp in awe and wonder. Jared is nonchalant and seemingly unimpressed.
"Is this real?" I whisper. It's incredible - I've never seen anything like this.
"Lara Hall, we are located in the 1837 A class Leto ship. This is a hologram." The Rex says.
I continue to gawp at the stars, enraptured with their fake magnificence.
"Lara Hall and Jared Miller." The Rex begins, calling both our attention to him. "You have been called to this meeting to explain to you the fate of the Human species. Your ignorance of the terms of the agreement has been noted and monitored at this evenings dinner."
"What have we done?" Jared says sitting down next to me and entwining our fingers. His face remains emotionless as does the gesture as his eyes glimmer in a void of darkness.
"The male and female character evidences have proven they are incapable of forming genuine attachments. Under the careful supervision of the Leto Guard and The Leto Rex this evening they have shown their developing love to be both false and impersonal. There has been no indication of effort by either character evidence. By attempting to fool the Leto, Lara Hall and Jared Miller will suffer the consequences. Commencing in 12 hours, 18 minutes and 45 seconds, mankind will cease to exist and the character witnesses Lara Hall and Jared Miller will join their species on board the 'Externium' ship." The Leto Rex says, as if he's reading from a script.
I feel Jared's hand tighten around my own. I'm left floundering in stunned silence but Jared seems to process the information before I do.
"You can't do that."Jared says as he jumps up.
"The character evidences did not form and prove an established bond of love. Therefore Lara Hall and Jared Miller have not exhibited proof that Humanity has the potential to show compassion for one another. The conditions have not been met." The Rex declares. I suddenly have a desire to leave scratches all over his perfect, cloned face. The bolt of anger I feel, is more powerful and overwhelming than anything I have felt before. My body seems entirely too receptive to the concept of violence this evening.
"That's because it's been 10 bloody days." Jared roars. "And she was unconscious for 7 of them."
He points at me. I cower back into the couch in fright. Nobody has ever looked at me with this much hate. It's then I realise that I don't want him to be angry at me.
Jared's eyes lighten. He sinks back beside me, sighing loudly. I can feel radiation waves of anger seeping off him.
"Lara I'm sorry" He sighs, squeezing my hand.
"Don't touch me' I say.
His fury harvested within is overwhelming. I turn to the Rex and feel the anger dance within me. This is his fault.
"There is no way we can 'form and establish a bond' of love." Jared mocks, using his fingers to quote the Rex's words. "In 10 days. It is not possible." He drops his voice to a cold, strained tone as he tries to rein in his furious aggravation. It's lethal.
"Please." I say. "Give us more time. We accepted the conditions which were that we had to fall in love in 90 days. Let us have the rest of the time allocated." I stare straight at the Rex, as he deliberates. He pauses, mulling over my offer before shaking his head.
"I'm sorry Lara Hall." He says calmly.
I open my mouth in amazement. A Leto never breaks his word. The injustice of his actions are unreasonable.
The Rex begins to walk back to the balcony door. Beside me, Jared seethes with fury. His chest swells and falls rapidly as his fists clench. Flames dance in his eyes as he rises. His intention is clearer than glass.
Before he can stop me, I whip up and place both my hands on his chest, pressuring to stop him moving.
"Jared, wait."
His eyes are distant and soul-less as he throws my hands off him barges through me. I stumble and regain my balance before running in front of him again. He grits his teeth and his eyes switch to a darker shade. I gasp and almost immediately his eyes return their normal colour. The change throws me for a second, that doesn't happen with normal humans. What could this condition be?
"Lara move." growls 'I don't want to hurt you'.
"Let me try first." I say.
He deliberates before sighing and nodding.
"Leto Rex, wait." I call out as he reaches the door. He removes his hand from the control panel to open the door and turns around.
"Yes Lara Hall?" He answers.
"Carlisle Kappor designed the Leto to help humans, am I correct?"
"That is correct." The Rex replies. "It was the Leto pater's intention that the Leto should not practice injustice."
"Leto Rex, you said yourself that Jared and I would be given 90 days to complete the conditions. It would be injustice to deny us the agreed time span and therefore against the Leto Pater's wishes." I say.
I'm smug knowing I've won my case already. The Leto have unsworn loyalty towards Kappor - he is their God.
"The extermination of humanity will be prohibited. Lara Hall and Jared Miller may use the remaining 80 days to form an established bond of love to prove whether Humanity can still care for each other and their planet." The Rex says, his lip curling in disgust.
He turns back to the control pad and opens the door. I'm left to flop back onto the couch, exhausted by today's turn of events. After it shuts I turn back to Jared.
"How did you know he'd give in?" Jared asks, his mouth hanging open.
"The Leto will do anything for Kappor." I shrug.
"Too bad - my fists were itching for a fight, though I'm not sure he would be a decent opponent." Jared scowls, cracking his knuckles.
"Wait a minute - why didn't you argue against the original conditions? Then we wouldn't have to be here." He says somewhat bitterly.
"Because whether you think so or not Jared, those conditions were actually pretty reasonable. They had to make sure Humans could actually still love each other so that if they did fix the planet, we wouldn't ruin it again." I roll my eyes. If only he could see beyond the conspicuous situation.
"What so now you're sticking up for the filthy trespassers? Lara they took everything." He roars. His cooled off anger returns with a vengeance.
"You know I'm not Jared. I know they took everything. I lost my mum remember? I told you I can never even like them but you still don't see it? It's not like they're worst conditions that we could have been stuck with." I yell back at him. His irrational behaviour and accusations fire me up.
"Not that bad Lara?" He scoffs. "You must think I'm so privileged that I get to fall in love with the sweet, beautiful Lara." He jeers, his voice mocking me. It hurts, a lot. "The good, the loving. Well guess what Lara? It's not."
My tears begin to fall. My chest hurts and the haze enters my brain. I promise myself I won't black out until I've said my view. I pause, trying to figure out how to answer him.
If Jared likes honesty, then that's what he's going to get.
"What? You think this was the ideal situation for me to?" I yell back at him, fighting with myself to stay awake. "You think I wanted to be forced to love you? A cold hearted, selfish man who protests that he can never love me? and the worst part is that I'll have to bond with you, meaning you'll be the only one for me just to prove these stupid conditions." I spit throwing out my hands at him.
"You know nothing Lara." He hisses. I attempt to stand on my shaky legs so I can get away from him but my body just feels so heavy. He moves towards me and starts to pick me up.
"Get away from me - I'd rather crawl on my bare knees." I whisper poisonously, glaring dagger at him. His immediately removes his arms from my thighs and waist.
He growls and storms to the door. Pressing the button, he's gone, leaving me on my own on the balcony. I relax on the couch, as the cool air burns off my sizzling anger.
Perhaps I went to far? I didn't mean that I'd rather crawl.
After ten minutes, goose bumps begin to form on my arms. With sleep deprivation beginning to take an apparent role, I stumble and sway to reach the door. By the time I've crossed the 15 metre gap, I'm spent. I manage to press the button to call for help before I gracefully fall to the ground, landing in a sprawled heap. Why am I so tired? Maybe it's all the pathetic weeping?
My energy seeps out of my body like a leaky pipe.
"Lara Hall, may I be of assistance?" A chirpy voice asks. A small blond Leto beams from above. Her blue eyes pop with excitement as I smile at her. Her white pantsuit is the typical Leto fashion; however her smile and excitement are not.
"Um, can you help me get back to my room?" I ask feebly, feeling pathetic as I ask this tiny girl for help despite the fact I'm almost double her height.
"Yeah of course. This is so exciting I can't believe I've actually met you. You're famous." She squeals eagerly. Her chipmunk-frenzied behaviour makes me feel even more tired and even more confused.
"Are you a Leto?" I ask. Her actions are just too weird for her to be one.
'No, I'm a Dimidium' she replies chirpily. I raise my eyebrows in confusion and she takes it as her cue to continue.
"Half breed. Half Leto, half human. My dad was Human and my mother is Leto." She says.
"Is that even possible?" I ask. How on earth would that happen? The Dimidium grins at my round eyes.
"Well here I am." She grins.
"How come you haven't been taken away then?" I ask.
"My mother is a member of the guard." She sighs. "She has obligations towards me. The Leto Rex also finds me interesting because of what I am. That's the main reason I'm still here." She beams again.
Her smile must be hurting her cheeks by now.
"Do you have any Leto characteristics?"
"My mother was the dominant in terms of genes. I have the typical Leto strength, communication, looks and a bit of the speech formality. I also possess emotions and the typical height of a 14 year old human." She shrugs.
"From your father?" I ask.
"Yes - though he wasn't short."
"Impressive." I laugh, in rapt with the Dimidium. "What is your name?"
"I have two - my first is Dimidium 1 but my human name is Alarena or Ally if you prefer Lara Hall." Her Leto formality returns for a brief second.
"Please, just call me Lara."
"Of course Lara Hall." Ally answers.
I falter. "I must ask - why am I famous here?"
She nods enthusiastically. "Isn't it obvious? You're the one of the only two humans on this ship - every Leto speaks about you in the village."
"There's a village here?" I ask eagerly.
"Yeah, I'll take you sometime if you should like?." She says shyly.
"Yeah, that would be great." I exclaim.
She gives me a grateful smile, her blonds curls frame her slightly chubby face as her blue eyes sparkle with excitement. Her smile suddenly falls.
"I'm so sorry, I completely forgot. How should I assist you?" She pauses. "...Lara?"
"I'm really sorry to ask you to do this, but I need to you to help me back to my room." I explain, ashamed at how weak I sound. "I've had quite an emotional day."
"Lara are you a Caritas?"
"Yes, why?"
"Rumours circulate." She shrugs.
"I can't believe I get to carry Lara Hall back to her room." She says breathlessly, her eyes glazed as if she's in her own personal dreamland. "I'm totally getting your autograph and everything." She sighs contentedly.
I roll my eyes, clicking my fingers in front of her face. She immediately returns to reality.
"I apologise Lara Hall for my lapse in judgement." She speaks officially in her 'Dimidium 1' ego. However it's not long before Ally returns. "That was totally uncool." She says.
"I don't mind" I chuckle. "Can you help me up please?" I ask. She nods before leaning down and sweeping me up. "I'm so sorry about this." I apologise but she seems to lift me with ease.
It's my turn to blush as the teensy girl strides to the door, types in the code and re-enters the Leto Palace with me in her arms.
"I don't mind." She grins as she repeats the words I said to her. She swiftly manoeuvres through the white corridors like a kitten carrying the cat.
"Lara Hall, where is the male character evidence Jared Miller?"
'"Being Jared." I sigh.
