Life or Death

For a while it seemed like everyone was going great. Donghyuck and Mark we're finally in a relationship, the pair had been out on lots of dates, and they couldn't be happier.

It had been a month and they were completely in love with each other.

Of course something started to go wrong. The universe always seemed to want to throw a monkey wrench into their plans. Like a being above them was pulling the strings and controlling the story.

Donghyuck started to get sick around Mark's birthday. The pair assumed it was just an average common cold.

And so, Mark's birthday came. The pair was sitting in Donghyuck's backyard eating a whole platter of chocolate cake. It was a guilty pleasure the pair of them had.

"Markie." Donghyuck cooed holding out a fork with a piece of the dessert on it. Mark's face flushed pink as he took the piece from Donghyuck.

Donghyuck's hand snaked inside his purple hoodie pocket. After a moment he took out a pale blue box, wrapped in white ribbon.

It was smooth to the texture so the boy played with it, while Mark was staring at the sunset.

Beautiful hues painted the sky, leaving for a perfect end of the day.

Donghyuck's hoodie covered hand tapped Mark on the shoulder. The boy turned to Donghyuck, his eyes widening at the present that laid in his hand.

Donghyuck grabbed Mark's rough hand and placed the present in it, smiling widely. He curled Mark's hand around the gift and pushed it to him.

Mark stared at Donghyuck, doe eyes wide. He carefully pulled the ribbon away and opened the little box.

Tears fell from Mark's eyes when he held the small item in his hand.

"Do you like it?" Donghyuck asked, whispering. He scooted closer to Mark and laid his head on the older boy's shoulder.

"Like it? Donghyuck I love it." The boy replied in awe. Laying in his palm was a promise ring, their birthstones intertwined in the middle creating a heart. "It's beautiful." The boy whispered.

Donghyuck spoke up from his place on Mark's head. "Just like us. We're beautiful and perfect." His tone was soft spoken and genuine.

Mark stared at the promise ring, admiring it for a moment before slipping it on his ring finger.

Interrupting the moment, Donghyuck hunched over into a coughing fit. He dragged his hand across his mouth. His eyes widened as he saw a scarlet liquid coating his once purple hoodie.

"Donghyuck are you okay?" Mark asked his eyes filled with concern as the boy doubled over coughing again. Said boy's face shifted into a paper white color.

Donghyuck showed Mark his hoodie sleeve as he moved to wipe his mouth again.

Mark's eyes went wide as he bolted to his feet. "Hospital. Now." Were the only to words he spoke because bolting to his car. Donghyuck followed shakily behind him.

Mark was already blasting down the street well over the speed limit once Donghyuck was secured in his seat.

They reached the emergency room in record time as Mark dragged Donghyuck into the building, making sure to yell for help. Everyone in the lobby jumped, before doctors ushered the boys in quickly.

They took Donghyuck from Mark's hands and brought the limp boy into a room. Mark sat right outside the door, listening to everything the doctors were saying.

That's when his world crashed down. 'This seems like an unknown disease, he might not make it.'

Mark choked out a sob, he couldn't take the bullet for Donghyuck this time.

An idea flashed into his mind as he stuck his hand into his jean pocket. Mark was greeted with the cold metal of a pocket knife.

He held the knife tightly in his hand. Mark always carried it around for self defense ever since he and Donghyuck ran into the gang.

Whenever he died, the day seemed to fast forward to the day after, leaving all circumstances of his death behind.

If he killed himself, could it save Donghyuck? He still had two lives left, this wouldn't be the last time he ever saw him.

'We're losing him!' He heard one of the doctors cry.

So he made up his mind. He'd roll the dice of fate.

Mark flicked open the knife, and turning it toward him he plunged it into his chest.
