Chapter 4: Newcomers
I went to bed dreaming of the adventures that would take place the next morning. It was my first day to college and I was really excited. It was sort of a dream come true. Getting an admission in a college that I dreaming for the past one year. Yes, it surely was a dream come true.
I was five minutes early before the school event had started. And instead of using my car, I took a ride with my bestfriend, Sofia.
Sofia and I know each other since we started Highschool. Thinking about us getting separate after senior year and go to different college make me feel a bit sad. We had a lot of things in common and one of it, we share a same dream. To be a veterinarian.
When I heard about her parents are going to move out to another country due to her dad work. I never thought that we will enter the same college together. Things was change when Sofia had secretly applied for Royal Steve College without her parent's consent. She never expect that she would be accepted to be a part of it. It went chaos when her mom received the letter before her. Her parents were mad but at the same time, they are also happy for her. And that's the reason why she still here, with me.
"I'm curious, how did get your car broken?" Sofia break the silence as she drove her car along the road.
I sighed "So, there's a man. Who hit my car yesterday-"
"What? A man?! Is he okay? How is he looks like? Is he HOT?" I was surprised when she raised her voice. Whenever I mention about a man, she'll response as she excited to hear more about it.
"What the fuck! You really care about him more than me?" I didn't believe she really asking for his appearance and whether he's okay or not.
"Tell me, is he HOT?" She repeated the same question which make me rolled my eyes.
"Well, I don't know! I don't really care how he looks like!" Well, even though I find him as a good looking man. Still, man are just the same. An asshole.
"Don't you have that kind of 'attracted to a man' in your entire body? Not even inside your hormone?"
"Jesus, Christ! Just stop it! For your information, that guy annoyed me" I still remember when he tried his best to flirted with me by writting K♡ on a piece of paper.
What does K stands for? His name? And why did he put a heart shape?
Damn. He is more childish than I ever thought.
"Why are you hate that guy so much?" She raised her eyebrows and take a quick glance on me. While her eyes focused on the road infront of her.
"He own me my car".
"Yeah, but. Don't you act a little too much? You hate him just because he hit your car?"
"I'll hate him as long as he didn't fix my car. That's all"
"Bell, I know you too well. Just because your dad cheated on your mom, I break up with Josh, you thought all man out there is the same". I just stay silence with her words.
That's true. In my entire life, I never had a boyfriend before. And thinking about my dad cheated on my mom make my heart ache. But, without him, I'll never exist into this world and met a good people like Alexa, George and Sofia.
When I heard that Josh and Sofia broke up, just because he found someone attractive than her girlfriend. He cheated on her and I was mad. My mind blow up! And on that time I decided to think that man is all the same. They took advantage on you, give fake hope, and the worst thing than them being an asshole is,
A cheater.
She had probably hooked me around five different guys each month, which is crazy! But, as stubborn as I was, I never really craved in. And it always puzzled her how I made it through all these years without a man by my side. Well, it's quiet simple, anyone can do it. I simply got rid of my attitude of being independent. I promised myself that I didn't need a guy to get what I want, and I certainly didn't need a guy to make me happy.
Finally, we arrived at our destination. Sofia parked her car and we walked through the crowd. As I entered the campus with her, I saw many unknown faces which I thought, they're a new students like us. I saw a banner was hanged between the two poles that read;
"RSJ Juniours, Welcomes To The New Batch Of 2019".
As we entered the auditorium, I saw the face of my seniors around the corner. They wore a red t-shirt with a logo of Royal Steve College. I bet it was a welcoming attire for a newcomers and also to differentiate between a senior and the freshman students. We are given a name tag by the seniors and asked us to write our names on it. And then, they decided to put us in a batch 6 with a group of 5 people in it.
I'm a fairly awkward person, so you know I don't take the a word lightly. I know a lot of campus orientations vary from school to school, but the gist is the same. I visit the campus either a couple of weeks before school starts for a registration, I meet everyone in the most inorganic way possible, and organized lunch everyday.
But, even though Sofia and I had a lot of things in common, she is more playful, friendly and less awkward than me. She love herself. And she love to expressed her trueself infront of other people.
For me, she is unique!
But I don't freak out. Freshman orientation is a rite of passage every incoming college freshman should experience. It's like when I went to Japanese restaurant and trying to eat a raw salmon for the first time and I'll hate it initially, but the entire "salmon" thing will eventually grow on me and I will fiercely love it, or at least tolerate it. That's college, essentially.
Sometimes I feel like a famous artist when there's a person taking pictures, gives no shits and take the photo as soon as I entered the building. I've got one opportunity. I smiled to the camera without getting any photo boom! (Evil laugh. Just kidding! :D)
As we gather around with our group, the orientation leader of batch 6 had gave us an activities to build relationship with each other. After we introduce ourself within the small group, we are given a piece of paper and an envelope to write our goals and aspirations for college, and then we can open it on our graduation day.
The seniors have everyone line up while explaining the activites. The first game that we played is a photo scavenger hunt. A friendly competition between orientation groups by creating a photo scavenger hunt for different areas and items on campus. We must work together to figure out what should be in the photo and then rush to take a picture with it. Our group finishes first and submits the correct photos. After bring it to the judges, we won the game.
The next game is a social media challenge and we musts win points by interacting with campus social media accounts by liking, commenting and tagging the school account on our social media. The small groups with the most activity will win prizes like gift cards or merchandise.
After the college activities and 30 minutes break end, the seniors give us a guide to explore the campus before we start our class and lesson. We were given a brainstorm tips and tricks to survive campus life include favorite study spots, lesser-known events, favorite restaurants, registration tips, and other tricks that will make adjusting to college life easier.
Finally, the college orientation had ended and I found myself lying on my bed as soon as I got home. Before I was about to have a nap, I look out for my phone and scroll the contact lists. I stopped when I found the person that I wanted to call. With one clicked, I put my phone on my ear and it only take less than one second for the person to answer it.
"Hello?"
