chapter 32: Devon

I quickly walked off to the car. How could he embarrass me like that? Jeon Jungkook must think I'm easy. There is no way he would even be interested in me. So that was just plain rude.

Lisa and Jenny we're giggling when they got in the car along with the rest.

Jenny poked me in the side "I didn't know you and Jungkook were a thing."

I scoffed "we are most definitely not a thing."

She rolled her eyes. "Are you still up for that triple date tonight? I think you could use a day off. You don't have work today, so come with us."

"Too bad Jungkook isn't in town." Lisa teased.

I frowned "Not funny Lisa. And sorry Jenny but I'm not the slightest bit interested."

"Oh come on. We helped you with Rapmonster's house, and in return we want you to treat yourself." Jenny continued.

Ugh. They were probably embarrassed I didn't have a boyfriend or something. But I seriously don't need one. I don't understand why they can't understand my motto in life. Study, work, colledge, job, THEN happiness. And in the category of happiness lands boys.

Josh had been an exception, but I'm over that and I'm ready to focus. If I was going to even think about paying for my house damages I would need to volunteer or find a job, yes, another one.

"At least let me set you up with someone cute." Lisa said.

I nodded my head but I was mentally rolling my eyes. "Do you know about Jimin trying to elope with Elizabeth?"

Lisa nodded her head "I'm so upset. I wish she'd let him live his life without being tied down. I never want him to get married. He can stay at home with me and Baekhyun."

I laughed. "Lisa you can't keep Jimin forever."

"I know." She said sadly.

We pulled up to Jin's house. "So you're coming tonight? Please? Please?!!!" They both begged.

"If I have time" I said already deciding no I just didn't want them to pester me any more.

They smiled and said "see ya tonight!" And drove to their houses leaving me to go to the teenager's center ; a place where you work for pay. I could do a lot of things there. Vacuum, babysit, help build houses, make food for the retirement homes.

All of it didn't give any good paying price but if I worked hard enough I'd save up and BAM! First month's payment for rent is done.

Alex could come and help so I drove him over to the center. When we got there I signed up for the work I wanted to do and a lady came back over to me giving me papers to fill out.

I was assigned to help building the new park nearby while Alex was assigned to cleaning out some hotel.

I joined a couple of other teenagers heading over to the park. I guess they need to make money too.

We took the bus to head over to the park. It was one of those miniature buses so I had to sit by a stranger.

I really didn't enjoy sitting by strangers. I just hope he wouldn't say anything to me. He had brown hair and brown eyes and looked about my age. I scooted towards the edge of my seat as much as possible.

I was looking out the window but I felt his eyes on me. Please don't say anything.

"Hey, My name is Devon."

I slowly turned towards him. Ew. Devon. I don't like that name

"Oh, my name is April. I like your name by the way." Oh gosh, why did I say that? It was a girl instinct. I always felt the need to compliment or say sorry even if I didn't do anything wrong. If someone compliments me I immediately come back with something.

"Thanks. I'm pretty sure I saw you on the news before." He said.

I was pretty surprised. I had no idea why me out of all people would be on the news.

"Really?" I asked a bit of my uncomfortableness fading away.

"Yeah. Are you the one whose house caught on fire?"

I gasped. "Oh yeah. Yes." I didn't know that was on the news. I'm sure more interesting stories were out there other than my house burning. I just hoped my mom wouldn't see it.

"They said you ran back into the house for money. Why would you risk that? You care about it that much?"

I frowned "First of all they shouldn't be displaying my business like that and second of all I have my reasons that I don't have to tell you." I said defensively and offended at the same time.

He had some nerve.

He laughed. "What is it? Drugs, a gang, new clothes? I don't get why people do what they do for cash." He said putting his hands behind his head and closing his eyes.

I rolled my eyes. "No. I don't get into things like that. You are talking to a girl with a 4.0 GPA. I don't worry about stupid things like buying the latest fads."

He opened one eye. "3.0 GPA huh?"

"I said 4.0!" I protested. I don't know what about this guy but he made me mad.

"Same thing. I don't need a 4.0 GBA. I bet I can guess your phone number with my 3.7 GBA."

I cut my eyes at him. "It's GPA for your information, and no you couldn't. It's impossible."

"Okay fine." He sat up in his chair " 703-654-7865. Am I right or am I right?" He said with a slanted smile.

"Wrong." I laughed. This guy was an idiot. "It's 703-259-1027" I still laughed to myself.

He was quiet and I looked up at him surprised to see him tapping my number into his phone. "HEY!!" I yelled at him.

"Oh come on, I'm the one with the higher GVA obviously. Didn't your mother ever tell you not to give your number to strangers?"

I crossed my arms "delete it. You don't need it anyway."

He looked upwards as if he was thinking. "No Apple. I will need it. When I call you."

I scoffed. "You are not calling me. And my name is April!"

I turned towards the window to tune him out. We finally arrived at the park and I got out as quick as possible. I was not interested talking to the Devon creep and I just wanted to work.

The boss told us our duties and I would put together the swing set. I needed to do this right so the kids wouldn't go flying off their seats.

I had an instruction paper so it couldn't be that hard. The sun was literally frying the life out of me.

Thirty minutes later I was finally seeing some progress. I needed to take a break. Some fruit and water would be nice.

A water bottle was tossed my way. I looked up and immediately scowled. Devon.

"Well you don't look too thankful." He said smiling his slanted smile.

I rolled my eyes. "Thanks. You can go now."

He squatted down into a sitting position. "You're stubborn. It's so hot out here."

"Yes and yes, now can you leave I want to work alone."

He laughed "You did this all wrong Apple. The swing goes there, these bars go here. We'll have to take it all down."

"It's April and are you serious?"

He nodded his head. "I can help you, I'm done with the monkey bars."

"No thanks." So what, I'd miss the triple date tonight. I didn't have a date anyway and I guess my hard work at least gave me exercise, even though I was already slim.

Devon stayed and started unscrewing the bars.

I looked up irritated. "I said No thank you."

He ignored me and kept pulling apart the swing set.

I put my hand on my hip. "Why won't you leave me alone?" I asked irritated.

He turned around to face me "I will. But it depends. Are you single?"

I frowned "You don't need to know." I said beginning to rebuild the swing set

He laughed and said "I'll take that for a yes."

I ignored him and I kept building.

For the rest of the two hours we built in silence and when it was finished I climbed back onto the bus. The man in charge passed out our paychecks.

$50. Not bad. But not good. I closed my eyes praying Devon would leave me alone. There was a free seat that I was hoping he would sit down in, but of course he sat beside me.

I kept my eyes closed. "Apple." He said.

My eyes flew open in irritation. "I told you my name. I'm not responding to Apple."

"Oh. Sour Apple, you want to go out with me?"

I looked at him in disbelief. "No."

He titled his head and his eyebrows raised "Why not?"

I furrowed my eyebrows. I couldn't believe he was asking me this. I opened my mouth to respond but my phone buzzed.

"Hello?" I said.

"Hey babe it's Lisa, your coming tonight right?"

I was about to say no but I looked over at Devon listening to my conversation. "Umm, maybe." I said.

"I really think you should. Jennie and I really want you to. Please. I could find you a last minute date."

I sighed "Fine, and don't worry about finding me a date." I said glancing over at Devon. He was annoying, but maybe that was him just playing. He was cute enough, not super cute like some guys I know, but cuter than Josh.

Devon smiled and raised his eyebrows "I'm assuming your date is I?"

I rolled my eyes "Yeah sure. You asked me out so I'll give it a shot. We are going on a triple date with my two friends and their dates. So act right."

He nodded his head smiling. "I'll pick you up, call me when you are ready"

"I don't have your number." I said.

"But I have yours. I'll call you first. I told you I would need your number." He said walking off the bus as we arrived back to the teenager's center.

Huh. This guy was going to ask me out all along. I kind of wish I had that courage when I saw someone I possibly liked.

I sat in the waiting room when Alex arrived with his envelope of $75. I guess his work was harder.

We headed back to Jin's house and I washed my hair and showered. I picked out a cute outfit for tonight and I actually was somewhat excited to just go out and have a little fun.

I took a last look in the mirror. I straightened my hair as usual and I was wearing a short, cute dress with flats and some small jewelry.

Perfect. I thought as I dialed Devon's number.
