Rapids
I follow closely behind Calum as we scan the green Forest for a sign of shelter. It hasn't been long since we left the others, in fact, I might be able to see them if I look closely enough. However, it seems that our hopes of getting away from the night might be failing.
"Shhh," Calum hushes, raising his machete in front of his body.
"Arrrrrrhhhh" a walker appears a few paces ahead of us, stumbling through the fallen leaves.
"So annoying," Calum utters under his breath as he stabs it through the eye.
He looks back at me for a split second, probably checking if I'm still there since I haven't said a word. Like I've said before, silence is sort of my thing.
We both continue forward, making sure to keep straight since we don't want to risk getting lost. I look down at my muddy converse, seeing that a small rip has formed on the side of my right foot. It might be a good Idea to find some new shoes...
"Do you hear that?" Calum asks. I listen carefully, picking up a familiar sound.
"Water?" I reply, Calum nodding rapidly in response.
My eyes brighten at the sight of a river flowing through the woods, disappearing way down the line. This is excellent, we needed fresh water! I kneel down beside it, splashing my face and then filling up my remaining water bottles.
"Look!" Calum exclaims, pointing his finger at a small building on the opposite side.
"Thank the heavens," I smile, eying the what looks to be a vacant shed, "that should do for tonight."
"Is there a way to get across? We should check it out quickly," Calum suggests, filling up his water bottles as well.
"It looks like someone threw in some rocks as a way to get across," I point out, looking at some flat stones that lead to the other side.
I quickly pick my bag off the ground, putting it across my back along with my bow and arrows. Hopefully this shed isn't holding a bunch of walkers, or even humans. I'd hate to have to go into battle with another group...
"Wait!" Calum calls out, grabbing my arm to stop me from jumping to the first rock, "it could be slippery,"
My eyes look down to his hand on my skin, and then back to his face. The thought of me being remotely attracted to him hadn't popped into my mind until now, but I mean, he is quite attractive...
Kiko what the fück.
"I know that!" I snap, pulling away from his grasp. There isn't time for those types of thoughts during an apocalypse.
He looks at me, his face that used to be filled with worry now hardening. Looks like he's not the only one who can put on a strong front - I do that all the time.
I carefully hop onto the first rock, followed by the second, then third, then forth, then fifth, and lastly the sixth, making the last jump onto the other side of the river. Calum hops onto land almost right after me, leading the way to the shed.
He holds his machete in his right hand as he prepares to open the shed's door, while I raise my bow at the entrance. We are completely prepared for anything that comes at us.
"Three, two, one," Calum whispers before ripping the door open.
Surprisingly, nothing decides to pop out on us. Calum then checks the inside, I peeking in to see the small shed completely empty. This is almost too good to be true.
"Perfect, I'll go get the others, yeah?" I suggest, jogging to the river.
"I'm coming with you, Kiko!" Calum sighs, "you shouldn't go off on your own, ever,"
I roll my eyes at him and start back for the boys. He may be right in some cases, but I'm pretty sure that I am completely capable of making the journey of legit 10 feet. Okay, it might be a little bit more than that but still.
"Guys! We found a place to stay at," I smile, appearing in front of Luke, Ashton, and Michael.
"Took you long enough," Michael grumbles, using a tree to help him stand. Why is he always in a bad mood?
"Let's go then," Ashton instructs, Calum helping him to lift Luke from the ground, starting in the direction of the shed.
"It's right there," I say, helping to hold Michael on his feet.
"Well that won't be hard at all to get to," Ashton grumbles, fixing his grip on Luke's upper body.
"It's fine! We just gotta be careful," Calum argues.
I look across the water, seeing how rapid the waves actually are. It does have quite the current, anything could get swept away if it fell in... Let's just hope that doesn't happen.
"Just take it one at a time," Ashton says, following Calum has he steps onto the first rock.
Ashton holds Luke under the armpits while Calum holds his Legs, slowly but surely making their way to the other side. Luckily, they make it without slipping or falling.
"Our turn," Michael mumbles, tightly holding onto my hand as he takes his first step.
Only one person can fit on a rock at a time, making it extremely difficult for Michael who has injured his knee. This also doesn't help me much since he's insisting on using my hand for support.
"Stop shaking," I mutter, worry building in the pit of my stomach.
"I can't help it!" Michael spits, stepping onto the forth rock. Two more to go.
I carefully step onto the third, Michael gripping my hand even harder than before.
"I hope you know that hurts," I say, making it to the next rock.
"Whatever, just be- shït," Michael curses, his foot slipping a bit. Luckily, he's able to catch himself.
"That just gave me a heart attack," Calum gasps, reaching out to Michael who has almost made it to land.
"That gave you a heart attack," I say, sighing with relief when Michael hops onto the grass.
He still holds my hand has I hop onto the final rock, lifting one foot off to put on land. Suddenly, Michael crouches down in pain, shielding his knee with his hand.
"Michae-wait!" I yelp, his sudden movement catching me off balance.
"KIKO!" Calum yells, reaching out to me with worry filled eyes.
However, the cold water swallows me before I'm able to take his hand, my body being tossed around in the rapids. My fingers grip onto something, recognizing the fact the Michael never let go. Michael fell into the river with me.
"HELP!" I scream, gasping for air every time I reach the surface.
I hold onto Michael for dear life, using my other hand to grasp onto his upper arm. The water refuses to show any mercy, throwing us back and forth against rocks and other objects. I can't even tell how long we've been in here, it feels like hours.
"Kiko!" I hear Michael yell above the waves. I cough a bit, noticing that we have stopped moving - for the most part.
"Rap your arms around my shoulders," Michael instructs, my eyes finally noticing that he somehow was able to hold onto a branch that had fallen in the water. I use all my strength to fight against the current, reaching out for his shoulders.
WOOSH.
A sudden wave washes over us, tearing me away from Michael and back into the roaring waters.
"NO!" I hear Michael shout before I'm back underwater, spinning around this way and that.
When I finally come up for air, I take in a deep breath, only to have water fill my mouth and lungs. I start to choke, coughing bubbles underwater as I desperately try to swim to the surface. I'm going to drown.
I cough once more, feeling my body start to sink to the very bottom of the river. This can't be happening. My hand reaches up, the Suns rays beaming through the water in thin streaks.
At least I won't die by a walker.
But I will become one.
My vision starts to blur, black spots popping up everywhere, my lungs burning, begging for me to take in air. If I breath now, I will be dead for sure.
But I can't hold it in anymore.
And just like that, I gasp for air, water filling my lungs as my vision fades to black.
