Transparent - 3/19/19
"Gracie, you gotta check this out," Evan said in the middle of a video chat. He was typing on his computer, which he suddenly turned towards his phone.
"A tent with a transparent ceiling?" Gracie questioned, reading from the computer screen. "Why would anyone want that?"
"Why wouldn't anyone want that?!" Evan countered, turning his phone back to him. His brown eyes were wide as his blue hair fell in his face. "Just imagine going stargazing with it!"
At that, Gracie perked up. She was in first grade when she had first become obsessed with the starry sky, and Evan knew that, sixteen years later, she was still as obsessed.
"That would be so incredible," she sighed, a far-off look in her eyes. "Especially if you were in the middle of nowhere."
"Precisely," Evan responded, pausing to type something more on his computer. "Which is why I just bought one."
"No way, you didn't," Gracie exclaimed in disbelief. When Evan simply turned the camera to show the verification for the purchase, Gracie squealed. "Oh my god, you actually did, no way!!!! You didn't have to do that, you know!!"
"Oh, I know," Evan said, the camera now showing the large grin on his face. "But I wanted to."
Gracie simply laughed, humored by how much of a goof Evan was.
"When is it gonna arrive?" she asked once she stopped laughing.
"Well, it says here that it'll be here in 4 days, so..." Evan paused, figuring out which day that would be. "Thursday, and then we can go stargazing Friday if you'd want?"
"Oh my god, I'd love to go!" Gracie exclaimed, flashing a large smile. A few seconds later, she gasped with realization. "We should invite Jacob and Tammy! I'm sure they'd love it so much!!"
When Gracie mentioned Jacob and Tammy, two of their close friends, Evan's smile became forced.
"Yeah, that sounds great," he said, trying to sound enthusiastic. "Well, I guess I'll see you on Friday!"
Friday night came, and the four friends had reached their destination, a grassy plain some 30 miles away from any civilization. The four pitched the tent and were able to get situated before it got too dark.
They stayed there until they could barely keep their eyes open, pointing out constellations and making up stories about different stars. When Tammy pulled out her phone to check the time, they were shocked when it said 1:28 am.
"That was so much fun!" Gracie sighed as they put things away.
"Yeah, it sure was," Evan murmured to himself, but Jacob overheard.
"You alright there, dude?" he asked, one eyebrow raised.
"What? Yeah, I'm fine," Evan hastily responded. "What makes you think I'm not?"
"Dude, you're practically as transparent as that tent when it comes to your emotions," Jacob retorted. "It's easy to see that something's wrong."
"It's just," Evan sighed after a while. "I kinda wanted Gracie and me to do this alone."
"Awwww," Gracie cooed when she heard, going to give Evan a hug. "You were jealous!!"
