Wally
"Hey, Daryl." Barry waved his coworker over to the breakroom table. "This is my nephew, Wally." The kid beside him sheepishly waved. "He's doing a project on forensic science for school, so I thought I'd bring him in for a field trip."
"It's just a little thing." Wally said, he gestured to the pile of pamphlets and notes in front of him. "This should be more than enough info for my essay."
"Wally's really into this kind of stuff, he's been into science before I even met him." Barry continued. "That must have been what, when he was about six? Seven?"
"It was a Bill Nye kid." Wally admitted.
"And then growing up it was all about the science fair, every spring-- His project went to nationals last year."
"Barry, I'm sure they don't want to hear about--"
"Wally's in AP physics and AP chem." Barry bragged.
"Well, quite the wiz kid." Angie remarked, uncapping her coffee and joining them.
Wally shifted. "Uh, yeah, thanks."
"He's been recreating quite complex experiments with his little chem set since he was twelve or thirteen." Barry continued. "He's really very talented."
Wally felt like the room just kept getting hotter. He fanned his shirt absently. "Barry, is this all stuff we can discuss with this crowd?"
"He's pretty good with WHMIS lab safety stuff, but there are always accidents..." Barry continued. "Scares the hell out of us, this kid."
Wally looked away shyly as his uncle's coworkers chuckled, chiming in. "What've you shown him so far?"
"He keeps pestering me to show him all the equipment," Barry joked, "He wants to get his hands on things no fifteen-year-old should ever touch."
"I know how they work! I've seen videos."
Barry laughed. "Y'know, I've known this kid for years, he just keeps getting smarter!" Wally never thought he'd object to receiving praise, he was usually desperate for it, but having Barry gush about him to his coworkers was kind of awkward. "Just the other day I caught him extracting Zinc from old batteries at the kitchen table!"
"Oh, uh," Wally scratched his neck. "I mean that's hardly the most advanced thing I've done, but yeah."
"And then he tried to consume the zinc, and that's where Iris stepped in." Barry laughed. "Have I told you about when he tried to distil vodka all by himself?"
"Barry, I'm sure they're busy with work." Wally interrupted, a little pink.
"I've got time," Daryl replied. "What happened?",
"He gave himself alcohol poisoning from fume inhalation and was sick for days." Barry laughed fondly. "He kept telling everyone he loved them, couldn't walk straight... we only found out he was drunk because he almost threw up on his friend."
"I wasn't that drunk..." Wally muttered.
"Do I need to pull up the videos?" Barry teased. His coworkers chuckled. "He was adorable, baby's first time consuming high-percentage alcohol." He continued. "...Poor kid, then the drunk sadness kicked in and he couldn't stop crying."
"I didn't cry!" Wally argued, cheeks bright red. "I maybe got a bit teary, but I didn't cry!"
"Alright kiddo." Barry scrunched his nephew's hair. "But it was a pretty big experience, huh?"
"Yeah, I guess."
