"One of us is a robot!"
David watched in horror as his uncle's minivan pulled up in the driveway. His family was visiting to celebrate his father's birthday. The only problem was that David knew something. He didn't know how he knew, but he did.
"Dad, they have to leave!" David demanded. His father rolled his eyes. "Will you quit this silliness already?". David couldn't stop worrying. He knew one of the was a robot!
Uncle Jim, Aunt Carrie and their children, Jeff and Jessie exited the car. Mom and Dad went to greet them. Not David. He knew, deep down, one of them was a robotic clone sent to kill him.
"Davey! You've changed so much!" Aunt Carrie said in her opera voice. "Let me give you a kiss!". Oh no! Every Aunt does this! Suddenly, it occurred to David: She must be the robot! It's the only explanation!
David tried to dodge his Aunt's big grabby hands. "Oh Davey! You look so handsome!" she sang. Unfortunately, David wasn't fast enough. Aunt Carrie grabbed him and pressed her big lips against his cheek. The only thing he could smell was perfume!
"Oh Davey! I just know the girls at school go crazy for you!" she continued hollering. David concluded that she probably wasn't the robot. If she was going to kill him, she would've done it there.
Everyone then entered the backyard for a barbecue. "Why won't you join everyone? It will be fun!" David's Mom said to him. He just sat there, under the tree, continuing to do and say nothing. He was too afraid to go near any of them.
Suddenly, a 'Clang! Clang! Clang!' caught David's attention. It was coming from his Uncle's direction. He was at the grill, barbecuing burgers and hot dogs. David wondered what the noise was. Without thinking he shouted: "Uncle Jim?"
Almost immediately, Uncle Jim turned around. David saw the source of the sound: a claw where his Uncle's hand should be!
David let out a bloodcurdling scream. His parents rushed to his side. "What's wrong?" They both asked. He watched as Uncle Jim approached, snapping his claw! David tried to run, but his parents restrained him. "No! No! Let me go! Somebody help me!"
"What's the matter? It's just a hotdog." Uncle Jim chuckled. He was holding a hotdog in his left hand. In his right hand was barbecue tongs, not a robotic claw. "Never mind." David sighed, embarrassed.
His parents somehow convinced him to sit at the table with everyone. David nervously looked around. He knew one of them was scheming to kill him. He then noticed his father offering Jeff and Jessie water bottles, they both politely declined.
'That's it! They're robots!' David thought to himself. Without warning, he took the two water bottles from his father and splashed his cousins with them! They were totally soaked. "Robots can't have water! It breaks them!"
Jeff and Jessie looked up at David, brushing their long hair away from their eyes. He'd never seen them look so angry before. Uncle Jim and Aunt Carrie stared at their nephew in shocked silence. David took a few steps back. Suddenly, he felt something grab his shoulder like a vice!
"David! What was that for?" His father asked in the most stern voice imaginable. "I told you! One of us is a robot!" Suddenly, the realization hit him. "Maybe you or Mom are robots! I have to get out of here!"
David freed himself from his father's grip and darted towards the gate. He was only a few feet from it when he stopped! His legs were still moving, but he wasn't! He was jogging in place! He tried to run normally, but he couldn't!
"Oh no! What did you do to me?" He cried in terror. He tried to scream for help, but all that came out was: "Please restart! Please restart!". Suddenly, David couldn't see anything but colorful lines! After a few seconds, he could see normally again. This time, he realized that his head was hanging from his neck! "Please restart! Please restart!" He continued to scream before everything went black.
"Great! He broke again!" Dad said as he picked up his crooked son off the grass. "Do you think we can fix him this time?" His Mom nervously asked. "Of course we can. We always can."
Inside the house, David was put back together by his father. Neither of his parents imagined raising a robotic child would be so difficult. "There! Got his head back on!" Dad said as he popped it back into place. "Why did he think everyone else was a robot?" Mom asked Dad. "I'm not sure. However, once we restart him, he should be fine."
His father was right. When David's system restarted, he was back to normal. He got up and skipped back outside with a smile on his face. He happily hung out with his family for the rest of the party.
