Background: Everly Green is apathetic. While growing up, Everly was always wary of other people and felt she couldn't trust them. She never cared for what other people did or what happened to them. Her father left her and her mother when she was 12. She was extremely angry at what happened. She tried to turn to her mother for comfort but was only pushed away. By the time she graduated high school, she was practically broke and living on the streets. Until she met her soon to be best and only friend Mark. When they first met, he was immediately drawn to her and the way she lived her life. She lived like she never cared. She never felt like she had to care. Soon, he decided he had to be friends with her. Everly kept ignoring him the first few times, but when he got her, her first job at Joe's Diner; all that changed.
SCENE ONE
INT. A DINER CALLED JOE'S DINER- LATE NOON
EVERLY GREEN isn't thrilled to be at work today.
EVERLY V.O: What's the point? What's the point in putting on a fake smile just to make another person happy? If I'm not happy...then what was the point?
Soon enough she hears a man yelling. She sighs, annoyed an. She then plasters on a fake grin and rushes towards the man's table.
EVERLY: Good afternoon, sir! What would you like today?
EVERLY tries her best to keep a calm composure not liking the awkwardness. She straightens her skirt. She then clears her throat signaling to the man that she's still here. The man regains himself still staring at her.
EVERLY (Annoyed): Sir, what would you like today?
The MAN blinks before replying as if waking up from a trance.
MAN: Red wine, a buffalo chicken sandwich, and plain fries.
EVERLY quickly writes it down on her notepad. When she's done she looks up and nods.
EVERLY: The food will be here soon, sir.
The MAN nods and goes on his phone as EVERLY walks into the kitchen. EVERLY places the order. She stands there and starts daydreaming. Her body is relaxed and her face looks dazed. She doesn't hear her name be called.
PERSON: Everly. Everly! Everly!! EVERLY!
EVERLY quickly snaps out of her thoughts and looks around. The person calling her was her manager and the owner, JOE.
JOE: I don't know what's going on in that pretty little head of yours, but what I do know is that you need to be alert and ready. What if all the waitresses were dealing with someone and there was a customer who had nobody attend to them? What if that customer leaves and gives us a bad review? All. Because. You. Decided. To. Daydream.
EVERLY nods. She looks behind her and sees a tray with the MAN'S order. She takes it and does her best to avoid any possible mistakes. While walking towards the man's table, EVERLY sees SASHA, another waitress delivering food. EVERLY tries to sidestep her but instead ends up tripping in the process and spilling the food.
It's so quiet you can hear a pin drop. EVERLY slowly gets up. She gulps. She knows she's really messed up. Everyone is staring at her as JOE sighs annoyed. JOE has one hand rubbing his face.
JOE: Get out.
EVERLY: Please, sir. I'm really sorry. Please-
JOE: Get out and don't let me repeat myself.
EVERLY stares at his retreating form in shock. Her mouth is open before she closes it and walks out of the diner frustrated.
CUT TO:
INT. EVERLY'S APARTMENT - LATE AFTERNOON
SCENE TWO
EVERLY sighed and looked around her apartment. She then enters her kitchen looking for something to eat. Soon she hears someone knocking. She opens the door wondering who it could be. It's her Landlady. EVERLY'S face becomes one of sadness. She can already guess why the LANDLADY was here.
LANDLADY: Hey, Everly, sorry to break the news to you but your rent is due. In fact, it's been due. For the past two weeks.
EVERLY had forgotten to pay her rent and she just got fired. When would she ever find a job in time?
EVERLY: I'm so sorry. Just give me some more time. I promise I'll give it to you.
The LANDLADY shakes her head.
LANDLADY: I'm sorry but I can't this time. I'll need you to pack out your things, if you don't we'll have to throw it out and charge you.
EVERLY nods numbly. The LANDLADY leaves.
SCENE THREE
EVERLY gets a phone call. She picks it up. It's her AUNT RISA. She bites her lip contemplating whether she should hang up or not. She and her aunt had never had a good relationship.
EVERLY: Hello?
AUNT RISA(O.S): Hello, Everly. I've called you to let you know that your mother has died from a heart attack.
EVERLY: She...has?
EVERLY'S voice sounds young like a child who has been denied.
AUNT RISA(O.S)(Annoyed): Yes, she has.
EVERLY feels like she can't breathe. As if the air got stuck in her throat. She forces out a shaky breath.
EVERLY: When's the funeral?
AUNT RISA(O.S): Tomorrow at noon.
EVERLY: Yeah...ok.
There's a pause before AUNT RISA speaks again.
AUNT RISA(O.S): Are you still working at that dump?
EVERLY winces at the words.
EVERLY: Actually...no. I got fired today.
AUNT RISA(O.S)(Sighs): The funeral is at Green Leaves Funeral Home.
AUNT RISA hangs up.
SCENE FOUR
EVERLY soon starts crying. First, it's soft sniffles but soon turns into full-blown sobbing. She goes towards her knife drawer. She opens it and gets out her sharpest knife.
EVERLY: I'm sorry I didn't get the chance to make you proud Mom. But..don't worry. I'll join you and we'll be happy together...
EVERLY gets ready to shove the knife into her neck but someone walks in staring at her wide-eyed, in shock.
SCENE FIVE
The person is MARK. Her best and only friend.
EVERLY: Mark...I'm sorry. But I have to go. I can't-
MARK cuts her off.
MARK: No. I'm not going to let you kill yourself just because you're going through a rough time.
EVERLY(Screeches): Just because?! I've been going through a rough time. But now...I'm done. I'm tired of the pain and suffering. I'm leaving and you're not going to stop me.
MARK quickly reaches out and grabs the blade before she plunges it into her neck.
MARK: I have a proposal for you.
EVERLY(Narrows eyes): Go on....
MARK: Give me 48 hours to help you see the world in a new light.
EVERLY: 48 hours?! That's only two days! How could you possibly change my perspective in two days?!
MARK: A lot can happen in two days.
MARK: If you still don't see the world differently...I'll let you kill yourself.
EVERLY: Deal.
EVERLY knew she wouldn't change her perspective in two days. What she didn't know was that anything was possible.
