Ch.4 Fight
~Y/n pov~
"Decision time is over. We will now reveal the game."
The doors opened and I saw small circular tins piled up on the tables.
"All players, please each take one of the cases in front of you."
People started stepping forward and taking a tin.
I stepped up and grabbed a tin, going to a spot away from most people.
"Please open the case and check the contents."
Taking a breath, I opened the tin to reveal what was inside.
Dalgona. It had a circle shape on it and a needle with it.
Were we meant to try and cut it out...
Gi-hun chose umbrella!
I was super worried but right now I needed to focus on getting myself through this round.
If Gi-hun didn't make it there would be no point to my life anymore.
No I shouldn't talk like that. He can do this.
"The second game is Sugar Honeycombs. The shape you have chosen is the shape you must extract."
There was a shocked look on Gi-hun's face.
"The time limit is ten minutes."
I sat on the floor and got into a comfortable position.
Pressing the needle into the honeycomb, I scratched away at it slowly.
We have ten minutes. I don't need to rush.
If I rush I could make a mistake.
My hand trembled slightly.
Having someone stood above me staring at what I was doing was a bit unnerving.
I lifted the honeycomb up and managed to snap the small section off without breaking the shape.
This was possible because I made two lines leading off the edge of the honeycomb.
We still have plenty of time left.
"Wait. Give me one. Please. Just one more." Someone begged.
I flinched when there was a gunshot and looked around.
A dead body slid down the slide headfirst, leaving a trail of blood behind.
I tried to concentrate on cutting out the shape but I flinched and almost messed it up every time there was a gunshot.
Taking a deep breath, I continued to try and get the shape out.
I can do this. I need to ignore the noises and focus on this.
I was about halfway done now.
More gunshot rung out.
Luckily, I didn't mess anything up.
I pulled another bit of honeycomb off.
Only one more bit now.
I placed the needle back in and scratched away at the line.
Half the time was gone but I was almost done.
"Player 111, pass."
"Player 67, pass."
I placed my hand on the honeycomb and finally snapped off the last bit.
"Player 199, pass."
I held up the circle to the guard.
"Player 372, pass."
"Player 210, pass."
Lots of people started to pass now.
I followed the guard as he led me out.
Frowning, I took one last glance at Gi-hun.
He can do it. He still has time.
~*~
I sat on the stairs with Sang-woo and player 199 nervously.
Staring at the door, I hoped Gi-hun would come through it at any moment.
There were only a few minutes left.
Then, the doors opened and people started walking in.
I searched for Gi-hun.
He came through the door a few moments later with the old man.
We stood up and walked near the door to greet them.
Player 199 waved excitedly, "Sirs, you made it! I'm glad you made it. I was really worried."
"It will take a whole lot more killing Gi-hun. I got Ssangmun-dong running through this heart." Gi-hun smiled and tried to lift the mood.
"Are you holding up all right here, mister?" Player 199 asked the old man.
"I'm okay. Yeah. All thanks to your sharp thinking." The old man turned to Gi-hun when he said the last part.
"I'm sorry." Sang-woo apologied, "I was wrong to suggest separating."
"Ah, don't say that. How could you know what it was? Choosing the umbrella was my call."
Sang-woo looked down and avoided eye contact, "Yeah, the whole team made it."
"Listen, players. I will now announce the results of the second game."
The number of players on the screen went down to 108 and the prize money went up.
We went over to the stairs and sat down.
"I'm so glad you're okay." I whispered to
Gi-hun, "How did you do it?"
He smiled, "I licked it. The lines on the other side were thinner."
"That's really smart." I smiled back.
I'm so glad he found a way to make it in time. I was really worried.
Gi-hun slung his arm around my shoulders and rubbed his hand up and down my arm in a comforting manner.
I leaned into him and rested my head on his shoulder.
~*~
We were only given an egg and a drink today.
It was barely anything.
It must be for a reason.
I sighed as I ate my egg.
There was so little food.
We were going to starve in here if this carried on.
I watched as player 101 and his gang all cut the queue and got seconds.
At the end, there were five people left without any food.
"I didn't get anything. Where's the rest?"
"Hey, we didn't get our meals either. Five meals are missing, sir."
"We prepared food for the exact number of players." The square masked man stated.
"Then where is ours? Please, sir, we need to eat!"
A gun was placed at the man's head.
"It was prepared for the exact number."
"Excuse me." A woman spoke up, "It was them they skipped the line and got seconds. I saw it."
The woman was pointing at player 101 and his gang.
"Hey, what the matter, everybody? You never seen a guy eat before, is that it?" Player 101 scoffed as everyone was staring at him.
Player 271 marched over to them, "Who do you think you are? That's my food you just ate."
Player 101 smirked at him, "Ah. So, uh, is this yours? Is your name in it? 'Cause I sure don't see anything."
They all laughed at him.
"I'm sorry." Player 101 started to drink from the bottle.
"Give me that." Player 271 charged and snatched the bottle out of his hands, "Give it back. It's mine."
The bottle fell and smashed on the floor.
"You little shit, goddamn it." He shoved player 271 to the ground, "Why did you break it, you jerk?"
He punched player 272 in the face, making him fall to the ground from the impact.
Player 101 started repeating kicking player 271 in anger.
My eyes widened as I watched this.
None of the guards were even bothering to stop it.
Does that mean it's okay to kill other players?
Player 101 stopped kicking him and walked away.
The man on the ground wasn't moving at all.
Is he dead?
Sang-woo and Gi-hun got up, walking over to the body.
Sang-woo checked for a pulse, "He's gone."
Gi-hun looked down at the body in shock and knelt beside it to check if it was true.
"Uh, hello guards! Can someone do something? Hey, didn't you hear that?" Gi-hun yelled as he walked closer to the guards, "A person died. That man there just died. Look, that man was killed. That bastard... That bastard just killed him. He just killed someone over there! He just died! Can't you hear me?"
Some guards walked in with a black box that had a ribbon on it.
They opened it up and placed the dead body in it before walking out.
"Player 271, eliminated."
Gi-hun sat back down beside me.
He was panting and had an angry expression.
I placed my hand on his arm to try and calm him down.
He let out a shaky breath and rested his head against my collar bone.
I wrapped my arm around him and pulled him into a side hug.
When he had calmed down, I let go but sat close.
"We can't fall asleep tonight." Sang-woo stated, "Who knows what else someone may try. Look at them. It looks like they're planning something. If they try to attack someone, let's group together and fight them."
Sang-woo patted player 199 on the shoulder.
"Come to our side if anything goes wrong."
I turned to the old man and saw he was falling asleep, "Hey, wake up. You've got to stay awake."
He turned to me with a tired expression, "Why?"
"It'll be dangerous. We gotta keep an eye out." Gi-hun responded, "And we'll come here if anything goes down."
I noticed player 67 by herself as she always was.
Player 101 has it out for her and I can't help but feel worried.
Standing up, I made my way over to her.
"What?" She asked when she realised I was there.
"Um.. you're by yourself and I know that player 101 has it out for you. It'll be dangerous and better if you're in a group." I started.
She cut me off, "I don't trust people, especially not people in here."
"Well, the offer is still there. Join our team. We're meeting up at the old man's bed after lights out." I offered her a smile and walked away.
A five minute timer appeared, counting down for lights out.
Everyone started getting into their beds.
The atmosphere was tense.
"C'mon." Gi-hun pulled me with him and we sat on the edge of his bed.
"I'm worried." I mumbled.
"It'll be fine." Gi-hun took my smaller hand into his and squeezed it.
His hand was warm and comforting.
We both laid down and waited for lights out.
The lights turned out a few moments later.
Everyone was still.
My eyes darted around, waiting for someone to make a move.
This woman screamed as a wet noise was heard.
She was being stabbed, over and over again.
There were more screaming noises and the sounds of running.
I glanced around and noticed people running around.
I could only make out figures in the dark.
Suddenly, the bed started to tip over.
I held tightly onto Gi-hun in a protective manner.
The bed clattered to the ground and luckily we were both unharmed.
We both crawled out of the small space.
Just was I was almost out, a hand grabbed my leg.
My eyes widened as my breathing quickened.
Quick. I need to do something.
I spotted a metal pole that probably came off on of the beds.
Grabbing it, I repeatedly smacked the hand until the person let go and screamed in pain.
I quickly scrambled up and followed Gi-hun to the old man's bed.
Sang-woo and player 199 were already there.
Someone grabbed started smacking Gi-hun with a pole.
Sang-woo snatched the weapon out of their hands and started whacking them with their own weapon.
The old man wasn't in his bed.
"Where's the old man?" I asked.
"I'm not sure."
We ran up the steps to look for him.
We hit anyone who got in our way.
"Hey, old man! Are you there?! Old man."
Gi-hun yelled loudly.
There was a loud noise as another one of the beds fell over.
There were people being smothered by pillows and I saw someone snapping someone else's neck.
If I'm not careful that could be me.
My hands trembled slightly as I took in all the chaos.
I noticed someone walking over to us.
Player 67...
"You came." I stated.
"Yeah.." she replied shortly.
Player 101 ran over to us probably after the girl.
I stood in front of her so he couldn't get to her.
He tried to stab me in the leg but I managed to dodge and whacked him over the head with my pole.
Player 199 came to the rescue with a huge piece of bed frame.
We all stood there, daring player 101 to attack.
"Hey, what are you doing? We're just helping cull the herd." Player 101 laughed.
"She's our teammate." I stated.
"Teammate."
"All of you, stop this." The old man spoke.
I looked up and noticed him stood on top the one of the bunk beds.
"I'm scared. We are all gonna die in here! Everyone, every single one of us is going to die! Please. I'm so scared. Stop this madness! If you keep this going, then we're all going to die in here!"
The lights suddenly turned on and guards came rushing in.
That old man... he's suspicious.
It couldn't of been just coincidence.
One of the guards shot their gun into the air to get out attention.
I dropped my pole and sighed in relief.
My body was trembling but no one would've known in the dark.
The guards all ran towards us and started to scan the dead players.
Some walked towards us and made us all drop our weapons.
"Drop your weapons. Turn around."
We got patted down and checked for any other weapons.
"Hey, it's okay." Gi-hun whispered to me and placed a hand on my trembling arm.
Player 67 placed her hand on my other arm and smiled slightly, "Thanks for helping me or whatever."
She spoke quietly so no one else could hear her.
I sent her a small smile and nodded.
She was like a little sister and I wanted to protect her.
"Player 456. Is there a man named Hwang In-ho here?" One of the guards asked.
"We don't use our names in this place." Gi-hun replied.
The guard walked away without saying anything else.
All of the dead bodies were eventually cleared out.
Was it safe to sleep now?
Gi-hun approached the old man once all the guards had left, "Are you all right? That was dangerous. When did you get up there?"
We were all sat on the steps again.
I looked around at the other groups of people wearily.
"We were worried about you, sir, when you disappeared." Player 199 added.
"Nobody here for hurt so that's good."
Sang-woo stated.
"Well, at this point, we should know what to call each other. Why don't we go around and tell each other our names now." Gi-hun suggested.
"I know your name already, though." Player 199 stated, "Ssangmun-dong."
Gi-hun smiled and held back his laughter, "Ssangmun-dong is just my hometown. The name is Seong Gi-hun."
Player 199 nodded slowly.
"So then, what about your name?" Sang-woo asked.
"Ali. Ali Abdul."
"And where are you from?" I asked.
"Pakistan."
"Where is that?" Gi-hun asked me.
"North of India." I replied.
"She's right." Ali nodded.
We turned to face the girl who was sat above us.
She looked at us and then sent me a panicked expression as if asking for help.
I shrugged at her as if to tell her she was on her own.
"Come on, really?"
"We're all teammates here now. We should really know each other, build up a little trust, okay?" Gi-hun told her.
"Kang Sae-byeok."
"Sae-byeok. That's a pretty name. Though I'm not sure how well it fits."
"And what is your name, sir?" Ali asked the old man.
He looked confused as if he didn't remember him own name.
Gi-hun smiled and patted his shoulder, "It's okay. You must be really shook up today."
~*~
The lights were turned off again.
Is it safe to sleep?
I pulled a blanket off one of the beds and wrapped it around myself.
Everyone else started to do the same.
I glanced at Sae-byeok to make sure she was okay.
I curled up and tried to get some sleep.
After what happened, I was shaken up.
Gi-hun pulled me into his side and ran his hand through my hair until I fell asleep.
I felt safe.
~*~
The old man was just sat there when I woke up.
Had he slept at all?
I nudge Gi-hun to wake him up.
He glanced at me and then at the old man.
The lights turned on which made more people wake up.
"Hey, old man. Did you stay up all night?" Gi-hun asked with a concerned expression.
This caught the attention of the others.
"I thought they would attack again or something." The old man replied.
Gi-hun frowned, "Old man, but you must be so exhausted already."
"It's all right. You don't really need that much sleep when you're old. And I didn't help when they went after everyone."
The classical music started playing again.
"Attention, players. The third game will begin momentarily."
Of course.
Everyone's exhausted from last night and we barely got any food and now it's time for another game.
I'm not sure if I could make it when I was this low on energy.
But I'll fight til the very end and struggle in the most annoying way possible to try and cling onto life.
