Ch.2 Going back

~Y/n pov~

There were screams and shouts as people started to run towards the doors.

I could hear them banging on the doors.

Gunshots rang out and blood splattered as people got shot one after the other.

My brain screamed at me to run at get away but my body was completely frozen.

I was grateful for that.

I'm still alive.

But I have to make it to the other side to live.

I'm good at red light, green light... I can do this.

I took a deep breath to reassure myself.

A few splatters of blood hit my face as I flinched slightly.

Every time there was a bang I tried my hardest not to flinch.

The bangs eventually stopped.

Even if I could move, I wouldn't dare look back at the piles of dead bodies.

I noticed Gi-hun had been knocked down and there was a dead man laid half on him.

"I will now repeat the rules."

My ears rang as I ignored the sound and focused on calming my breathing.

When the doll turned back around, I moved until I was next to Gi-hun.

Everyone else was stood still.

The only other person who moved was the old man.

He was going to die anyway so I guess he didn't care as much.

"You need to get up." I told Gi-hun.

He glanced at me with fear present in his eyes.

There were a few more gunshots as the doll turned around which we both flinched at.

"She's right." Sang-woo ran up beside me, "You can't stay there much longer. I think that doll senses when you move around. You won't get caught if you're behind somebody else."

The doll turned to face away from us again and I advanced forward after sending one more glance towards Gi-hun.

Everyone paused when the doll turned to face us again.

There were a few gunshots before she turned back.

I quickly glanced back and saw Gi-hun had gotten up.

My confidence picked up as I moved forward with large strides.

I blurred out everything else and focused only on the doll and the timer.

I need to make it over that red line.

There were a few people who had already made it now and it was only a few more meters away.

When the doll turned away from us again, I ran towards the line and went over it just as she started to turn her head.

Letting out a sigh of relief, I turned to see who was still on the other side of the line.

I noticed Gi-hun a bit away.

Would he make it in time?

Someone grabbed his leg and tried to stop him.

Gi-hun looked at him with mixed emotions before kicking him off and running.

Sang-woo had made it over the line now.

There was less than a minute.

I felt like I was going to be sick.

Please make it, Gi-hun.

He ran again and got closer and closer to the line.

In his hurry to get over the line, he tripped over someone's arm.

I closed my eyes.

I couldn't watch.

There wasn't a single gunshot.

I opened my eyes and saw Gi-hun being held up by the collar by player 199.

Relief flooded my sense but it wasn't over yet.

They were both trembling.

I noticed the pure panic on Gi-hun's face.

When the doll turned again they both ran and jumped over the line.

The timer hit zero just after they made it over.

I let of a breath of relief as I felt tears build up in my eyes.

Pushing the tears back, I ran over to Gi-hun.

The other players who hadn't made it over the lines were all shot.

I flinched as they all fell to the ground.

"I'm so glad you're okay." I tightly hugged Gi-hun.

He was still sat on the floor.

He hugged me back just as tight and rested his head on mine, pulling me into his lap.

A shadow fell over us making me look up, there was a roof coming over the room.

It was a strange sight.

Gi-hun let out a shaky breath, "You're safe... we're safe."

We both stood up and reluctantly let go of each other as we followed the guards back to the room we were in before.

Gi-hun stood near me the whole time.

He was basically hovering over me.

~*~

Everyone was sat on the floor.

"Sang-woo." Gi-hun broke the silence, "You helped me. Thank you."

We were whispering so we wouldn't disturb anyone.

Gi-hun turned to player 199, "And you did too. You saved my life out there."

"You are alive. That is what matters." Player 199 responded.

The lights had been turned off so I'm assuming they wanted us to sleep but I don't think anyone could sleep after that.

I didn't even know what time it was.

I shuffled closer to Gi-hun.

He placed his arm around my waist and pulled me into his side.

It was a comforting gesture.

I wasn't sure how long we were sat there until there was a buzzing noise and the lights switched on.

The doors opened and in walked the men in pink suits but this time they were armed with guns.

"You have all made it through the first game. Congratulations. I will now announce the results of the first game." The man with the square mask spoke.

This time the people with him had triangle masks.

The number of players on the screen above their hands began going down until it reached two hundred and one.

"Out of the four hundred and fifty six players, two hundred and fifty five were eliminated and two hundred and one player successfully completed the game."

"Mister, please! Listen, I'm so sorry." The woman started begging, "I promise I'll pay what I owe! I'll do it! I'll pay it all."

She fell down on her knees and her face was all scrunched up as she started to cry, "Please. I have a child. I need to register and I still need to name my child, sir."

It seemed like some people had gained confidence as they watched her beg because more people started joining in.

"There seems to be a misunderstanding." The square masked man was unaffected by their begging, "We are not trying to hurt you or collect your debts. Let me remind you that we're here to give you a chance."

"A chance? We play some kids games and you shoot us. You want me to choose that?"

Other people joined in and started protesting.

"Consent form, clause one. A player is not allowed to stop playing." The man stated.

Everyone started protesting again.

Everyone froze when guns were pointed at us.

Sang-woo spoke up, "Consent form, clause three. If all the players agreed to stop playing the games are allowed to end."

"You are correct."

"So.. let's vote on ending this. If the majority wishes to leave this place, then everyone gets to go home, right?"

"All right. As you wish." The square masked man agreed, "We will take a vote to decide on the termination of the game. Before we vote, let me announce the prize money for the game as previously promised."

We all looked up and a ton of money started filling the huge piggy bank until it was about half full.

That's a lot of money.

"Twenty five and a half billion won of prize money has been accumulated so far. If you wish to give up on playing, it will be sent to the bereaved families of the late players." The guard explained to us.

People seemed to be having second thoughts about leaving now that they had seen the money.

~*~

There were two buttons in front of us.

A red button and a green button.

Obviously, red was to go and green was to stay.

Gi-hun was up first.

He pressed red.

A few people picked green and a few people picked red.

The look of shock on Gi-hun's face when he saw people picking green broke my heart.

I want to stay for the money to be honest. There's no really anything to go back to...

Then again, I have him.

I stared at the two buttons for a few seconds before picking the red one.

Gi-hun's face lit up and I saw the relief as I walked towards him.

More people chose and it finally got to Sang-woo, the person who decided we should vote to leave.

He picked green with almost no hesitation.

A look of hurt and betrayal was displayed on Gi-hun's face as he locked eyes with Sang-woo.

Sang-woo just ignored him again like he has the whole time.

What is wrong with him? What the hell is his deal? Jerk.

"Have you all gone crazy?! We have to leave. We can't keep putting up with this insanity!" Someone yelled out.

"So what if we leave?" The woman who was begging earlier responded, "Tell me, what changes? Just as bad out there as it is in here, goddamn it."

"She's right! If we stop right now, that only helps the ones who are dead. They'll get one hundred million won and not us. We made it through! They're out! The money is ours."

"Please! Think about what just happened out there! Come on, let's go!"

"Where am I supposed to go, huh? Out there, I don't stand a chance. I do in here. No, I've got nothing out there. Come on, let's finish this thing! I'd rather stay and keep on trying in here then go back to the bullshit out there."

"You jerk! You got some kind of death wish? Go die alone!"

I stepped back as two of them started fighting.

My back hit Gi-hun's chest as I stepped a bit too far back.

Gi-hun placed his hand on my arm reassuringly.

One of the guard pointed the gun at the two people who were fighting and they stopped immediately.

Finally, it got down to the last person to vote.

It was the old man.

The votes were evenly tied, his vote would be the deciding vote.

He hesitated as he stared back at us, the money and then the buttons.

After some consideration, he picked the red one.

Lots of people cheered and yelled in relief.

I relaxed and sank back into Gi-hun's chest.

~*~

I felt myself be thrown as I hit the ground with a harsh thud.

It was so cold. I shivered.

"Help! Hello?!" Gi-hun yelled.

I shuffled around and used my tied up hands to push the blindfold off my head.

"Who's there?" Gi-hun asked when he heard my movement.

"It's me."

"Get this blindfold off, please." He stopped yelling.

I managed to turn and pull the blindfold off his head.

"Thanks." His eyes widened when he saw me and he quickly turned his head in the other direction, "Ah, sorry!"

We were both in nothing but our underwear.

I felt heat rising to me cheeks but I ignored it.

"It's whatever... untie my hands." I shoved my hands towards his.

He looked down at our hands and fumbled around for a few moments, trying to undo all the knots.

When my hands were free, I untied my legs and looked in the bags.

Our clothes were here, thank god.

"What are you..." Gi-hun trailed off when he saw I was getting dressed, "Sorry."

"It's fine." I quickly slipped all my clothes on before walking over to him and untying his hands.

He awkwardly avoided eye contact.

I kept my eyes glued on his hands and feet as I untied them, trying not to let my eyes wander.

"There." I stood up and brushed off the dirt from my knees.

I turned and tried to leave.

Gi-hun was shuffling around behind me, probably getting dressed.

"Wait."

A hand grabbed my wrist.

I turned and face Gi-hun with a questioning face.

"Why did you disappear all of a sudden?" Gi-hun frowned.

I bit my lip.

There was no getting out of this one.

"Everything started to go downhill and before I knew it I was in debt. It was partly my ex boyfriends fault and partly my own... I thought you wouldn't want to be around a loser like me so I vanished. I never would've imagined you getting into the same situation as me. And now we're both in debt." I explained, while avoiding eye contact.

"Your ex boyfriend... what did he do?" Gi-hun asked seriously, he placed his hands on my shoulder and made me look at him.

He stared at me with that stupidly cute face.

Tears welled up in my eyes as I stared into his eyes.

I remembered sleepless nights, the abuse, the threats.. everything.

"He abused and threatened me." I managed to choke out, tears running down my cheeks.

Gi-hun's jaw clenched in anger and then his expression softened when he noticed my tears.

He pulled me into a tight hug, my head resting in the crook of his neck and my hands clung to the front of his shirt.

"It's okay. I'm here now." He whispered soothing things into my ear while stroking my hair

I managed to calm down eventually as he pulled away slightly to look at me.

"I'm sorry I need to go..." I sniffled and wiped away the tears.

Gi-hun was reluctant but he let go of me, "We'll talk later, okay? Oh... here's my address in case you need anything. Come by sometime, okay?"

I nodded and watched as he fumbled around in his pockets for a pen.

When he found one, he gently grabbed my hand and wrote his address on it.

~*~

When I made it back to my apartment I saw f/n stood in the living room with her hands crossed.

"What?" I asked.

"Don't you what me!" She glared at me angrily, "You haven't paid rent for God knows how long and then you suddenly disappear and come back a few days later."

I opened my mouth to speak but she held her hand up to tell me to shut up.

"I don't even want to hear what you have to say for yourself. I'm done with this and all your shit. We're supposed to be friends but you can't live here anymore. I'm kicking you out!"

"Huh? F/n? Please wait! I'll get enough money to live here I promise!" Fresh tears started rolling down my cheeks.

"Don't try and make me feel sorry for you! I bet you made all this shit up about your boyfriend too to get sympathy! You're not tricking me. Get lost. I never want to see you again."

My heart broke as those words left her mouth.

We're supposed to be friends. I've been with her and listened to her all this time.

Why isn't she understanding?

How dare she say those things!

"You bitch! You're a horrible friend." I glared at her angrily, "All those nights I've spent crying myself to sleep and you're trying to tell me I made it up. Don't be ridiculous. Are you that full of yourself that you thing the world revolves around you? It's never about me. I try and tell you something and you just compare my situations to yours. But you know what, you don't understand anything about how I'm feeling. And you will never understand. So goodbye."

I took a shaky breath before slapping her harshly across the face.

She stared at me with her jaw dropping open in shock.

I yanked the door open and slammed it behind me.

The door opened and she threw a bag at me.

"Take your shit with you!"

It wasn't much... just a bunch of clothes and a few others things.

What do I do? I have no money and I have no clothes.

Where am I supposed to go?

I walked down the dark and silent streets.

There were only a few people around.

I wandered aimlessly for a while, unsure of what to do.

Rain started to fall.

If only I had someone.

Even my parents are gone... and it's all his fault, that psycho.

It was then I remembered the address on my hand.

Bringing my hand up to look at it, I realised it was getting wet.

Oh no! The ink will wash off.

I quickly ran for covered and stopped just outside a convenience store.

There was a small part in front of it with a table and some cover from the rain.

I noticed someone sat there.

When I got closer I realised who it was.

"Gi-hun?"

His head snapped up, "Y/n?"

I sat down beside him, placing my bag on the floor.

"What are you doing here?" I asked worriedly.

He gestured to the alcohol he was drinking.

I sighed.

"The real reason." I looked at him sternly.

I shuffled my chair closer to his.

"My mother... she has diabetes and needs surgery immediately. Of course I can't afford it... she might die." Tears built up in his eyes as he started crying.

I placed a hand on his head and guided it to my shoulder, my other hand wrapping around his waist and rubbing circles on his back in a soothing manner.

He sniffled and clung to me tightly.

"I don't have anywhere to live anymore." I smiled bitterly.

"Huh?" He tilted his head up to look me in the eyes and frowned, "You can stay with me."

"Are you sure?"

He nodded his head rapidly, "Of course. You need to be safe."

I pulled away from the hug and gently wiped the tears off his cheeks with my thumb.

He smiled slightly as we shared a drink together.

Someone stopped in front of the table when they came out of the shop.

We both looked up and saw the old man from earlier.
