Chapter 3
I follow this young man to God knows where, with this small puppy in my arms. It had fallen asleep. We reach, what seems to be his house, and its not far from the beach. Let alone far from my house. He unlocks the house and in runs Sunny. He chuckles and let's me walk in first closing the door behind us. I look around in awe as his house is gorgeous. "How are you going to find out if the dog has a owner or not?" I ask.
"Well.." He starts as he walks over to a cupboard in his large kitchen. "We're going to clean him up, feed him, give him water and tomorrow I'll take him to the dog shelter and see if he's got a chip." He says as he takes out supplies from the cupboard. "And if he doesn't?" I ask. He looks at me. "He'll be put in the dog pound. Maybe if he's lucky in a pet store because of his size." He says. I frown. "You wouldn't take him?" I ask. He frowns and shakes his head.
"One dog is enough for me. Especially Sunny. She's a hand full. And is a big dog." He says. I nod my head in agreement. I look down at the sleeping puppy in my arms. "You.. Wouldn't want him?" He asks. I look up at him. I haven't thought of that. I shrug. "I'm not sure. He's very sweet... But I've never owned a dog before. And I'm not sure of how to take care of him." I say. He gathers the things and walks towards me.
"I can help you out." He says with a grin playing on his lips. My heart pounds. "I'll have to think about it." I say. He nods. "Follow me." He says. I follow him right away, hoping not to get lost in his large house. "And I would start waking him up. He has to be awake for the bath." He says. I shift my arms as I walk and the puppies little eyes start to open. We enter a huge bathroom, Sunny follows. "You're next Sunny so be ready." He says.
Sunny let's out a little bark as if agreeing, which makes the small puppy bark back and wag its tail. "So I never got your name", he says as he readies the water. "Faith.. And yours?" I ask. He looks at me and smiles. "Hoseok." He says offering a hand. I nod. "Nice to meet you." I say taking his hand. "As to you." He says. We wait for the water to be a safe level for the puppy. "Okay. Its ready." He says. I slowly place the puppy in the water. Right away he starts to splash around.
The water slowly started to turn brown. "He's really dirty isn't he?" I ask, such a stupid question for me to ask. Am I nervous? He looks at me and nods. I hand him the dog soap and watch him scrub the puppy. Luckily. He's a very calm puppy, and isn't scared of the water. "Its a shame this puppy is a stray, its very well behaved and very sweet." Hoseok says as he washes the puppy calmly. "Yeah... Its a sad shame.." I say.
It took three washed to get the puppy completely cleaned. "Luckily he doesn't have flees." Hoseok tells me as he wraps the puppy in a towel and hands him to me. I gladly take him. Hoseok quickly scrubs the tub down then rinses it out. He whistles and in jumps Sunny. I smile as I look down at this small puppy in my arms. I can actually see his face now. He's quite cute. "So where did you get Sunny?" I ask him as I sit down on the toilet top.
"Found her." He says as he scrubs down Sunny. "Really?" I ask. He nods. "I was walking pass an alley one night after work and I heard whimpering. So I decide to check it out." He turns and looks at me. "It was the saddest thing I've ever seen." He says. His eyes watering a bit. "She was in a box with three other puppies.. But the others were all dead." He says. I don't notice my eyes watering as well. "I'm lucky I found her in time." He says.
"So I took her as my own and buried the rest in my back yard." He tells me as he turns back to scrub Sunny. I wipe my tears. "That's why.. When ever I find a stray dog, no matter how many. Or how big. I take it in and take care of it.. Clean it up and feed it. Before taking them to the pound." He looks at me again. "I know the pound isn't the best place for a dog.. But its much better than it being out by itself where it can get hurt or killed." He says.
He finishes off Sunny and turns off the water. "That's very sweet of you Hoseok." I say. He dries off Sunny. "Its just what I do.." He says. Sunny hops out of the tub and gallops out of the bathroom. "She knows I'm going to feed her." He chuckles. "Come. We're gonna feed this little guy too." He says petting the small puppy in my arms. I follow him back to the huge kitchen. He starts to walk to his walk in pantry.
And comes back out with a huge have of dog food, and two small dog bowls. He walks over to Sunny's bowl and fills it. I set the puppy down and it shakes a bit of water off and then trots over to the sound of the food. Its so adorable. Hoseok sets the small bowl down and right away the puppy chomps down on the food. Hoseok and I sit at his kitchen table and watch as the puppy eats away at its second bowl of food.
"Its really great what you do.. I know I told you that already.. But it really is." I say looking at him. He smiles. "Thanks. And you did a good thing today too you know." He says. My eyebrows knit in confusion. "Me?" I ask. He chuckles. "Yes you... You helped this little puppy. I don't know if you noticed but, I didn't do this on my own." He says. I feel my face heat up. In a way he's right.
The puppy trots over to me with a full belly. It looked fat. Its tail wagging at 100 mph. He uses his paw to poke at my leg, so that I can pick him up as he begins to whine. I pick him up. "I think you should really consider taking him in. He seems to like you a lot." Hoseok says. Sunny walks over to us and sets her head on Hoseok's lap. I look down and grab my phone out of my pocket. 1:30 was the time. I stuff it back in the front of my jeans.
"Um.. Its quite late. I should be heading home." I say standing up. He looks at me. "Let me walk you." He insists. "Oh. No its fine really." I say. He shakes his head and stands up. "Nope. I'm not letting you go by yourself." He says. "But.." ,"No buts. I won't allow you to walk home alone, not at this time." He says heading over to grab his coat. I set the puppy down and pat Sunny's head. "Bye guys." I say. We're about to leave when the puppy begins to whimper loudly.
"Oh.. Now that's gonna be a problem." Hoseok says. I frown. "Step out real quick." he tells me. I step onto his porch and stand still. He closes the door and I hear whimpering once again. The door then opens wide and the whimpering stops. He closes the door and the whimpering is even louder. The next time the door opens the puppy is in Hoseok's arms. "Guess who is your roommate for tonight?" He asks. "Who?" I'm startled by the sudden question.
"This little guy." He says handing him to me. My eyebrows knit as I grab the puppy. "But why?" Hoseok joins me on the porch and closes the door behind him. "Don't need a crying puppy to wake my neighbors." He chuckles. "But I told you.. I don't.." Hoseok sets his hand on my shoulder. "Faith. Its just for tonight. Until we take him to the pound tomorrow. Then you won't ever have to worry about it again." He says.
And the way he put it out made me feel bad, like I was letting this puppy down.
On our walk to my house, which was around the block, I thought a lot. We're at my door step. I unlock the door and turn to him. The moon light made him look.. Handsome. His hands in his front pockets as he peers at me. I grin at him, only to earn the cutest smile I've ever seen. "I've been thinking.. Hoseok." I peep. His chin does up. "Yes?" He asks. "If... He doesn't have a owner... I would like to keep him." I say, knowing I've made the right decision. His smile grows bigger.
"That's great Faith. I'm glad you've decided that." He says. "So will it be okay if I come and pick you up tomorrow? So we can go to the pound together?" He asks. I nod. "Since you know where I live now. Of course. I'd love to come with you." I say. He nods.
At this moment, I don't know what my body is doing. I walk over to him and plant a kiss in his cheek. "Good night.. Hoseok.." I say quietly as I inch away from him walking back to my door and shooting him a glance before I head inside. A slight grin appears on his face as he touches his cheek that I just kissed. I close the door behind me and lock it. Only to find myself thinking about what I've just done.. And for some weird reason, I don't regret it.
**
That night, I think about all the things that have happened today. If it was destiny. Or maybe just a dog. But.. When I was around Hoseok.. There was something different. Like when I was with Shawn today, it was awkward. But when I was with Hoseok.. I can't explain it. It was an amazing feeling. I snuggle up in bed, and the puppy snuggles up with me as he lays in the crook of my neck.
Giving me warmth, I smile to myself as I realize that this dog might be able to change my life for the best. Actually making me happy, and helping me learn what love is.. Or was I thinking about Hoseok?.. But I barely know him. So it can't be him. All these thoughts run through my head as I think in bed. All these wonders make me tired, and before I knew it I was asleep still wondering about everything...
Was it destiny?
