Starry Skies

It was late at night, the entire Redstonia bathed in a gentle glow from the moonlight. Lights were turned off in most houses and apartments, the Redstonians having called it a day hours ago.

But inside one specific building, there was light turned on behind the curtains. The clock on the wall, silently ticking away at time, revealed it to be just past midnight. But the engineer that lived there, haven't spared a glance at the time in hours

Olivia was sitting at the dining room table, bent slightly over her work as she concentrated. The table's wooden surface was covered in building parts, bits of machinery and a fine coat of redstone dust. Quite a violent contrast to the rest of the neat apartment.

Olivia's eyes were glued to the contraption she was working on, slightly biting her lip in concentration. The pyjamas she wore, indicated that she had the intentions of sleeping earlier.

"Ugh!" Olivia let out a frustrated groan, slamming her fist on the table before raking her hands through her black hair. "Such tiny parts!"

Grumbling under her breath, she adjusted her position on the chair, leaning back over her work. But after hours of staring at the same components, everything was started to bleed together.

Olivia leaned back in her chair, sighing as she rubbed her tired eyes. She knew she could just go to bed, but how was she meant to sleep when she knew her invention was still sitting unfinished on the dining room table?

After all, she didn't feel tired in the slightest, it was just all the fine detail she had been focusing on that made her eyes sting.

Blinking a few times, Olivia got back into position and tried to continue working on her invention. Minutes continued to silently tick by as she proceeded to wire redstone.

Finally, after another frustration filled fifteen minutes, Olivia gave up. Sinking back in her chair with another groan, she shook her head to herself. The machine would have to wait until the next day to be finished, her concentration was simply wavering too much.

Getting up from the chair, Olivia walked over to her apartment's tiny kitchen to make herself a warm drink. She stopped to look out of the window, smiling as she stared out over the town of Redstonia.

There were a lot of days where Olivia missed good old Beacontown and all her friends. But she wouldn't easily give up living in Redstonia, finally able to live the dreams she's had for years.

Olivia sighed softly as she began warming up some milk. Her mind was too awake and excited for sleep at that moment, still buzzing with thoughts about her work.

Maybe I should do something to calm myself down first, like read a book. Olivia thought to herself. After all, it was the weekend. Ellegaard wouldn't be expecting her at the dome the next day, she could sleep in if she wanted to.

Smiling to herself, Olivia picked up her cup of hot cocoa and walked back out into the living room. Once more, she found herself looking out of the window over Redstonia.

Olivia thoughtfully ran her finger along the rim of her mug, wondering how nice it would be to go for a stroll. Few Redstonians ever left their homes after dark, and Olivia had kind of been following that example. It's been incredibly long since she last walked beneath the moonlight.

Making up her mind, Olivia finished off the rest of her hot cocoa. She grabbed a long red coat and a pair of boots which she simple wore over her sleepwear, before leaving her apartment.

The outside air was cool with a gently breeze blowing, yet not cold. At first it seemed dead silent out in the streets. But after walking down the side walk for a few minutes, Olivia began to pick up on all the sounds of the night.

The ocean waves lapping at the island's shore, a chorus of crickets singing their hearts out into the night, the leaves rustling in the wind. It was so incredibly peaceful.

A smile began playing on Olivia's lips as she walked, her brown eyes glinting in the dark. She began picking up her pace, strolling down the street to the town perimeter.

Olivia silently scolded herself for not taking a night-time stroll sooner. Back when she used to live with her friends, they used to love going out at night, be it to just watch the stars or do some mob hunting.

There was slight pang in Olivia's heart, making her face fall slightly. As much as she loved working for Ellegaard in Redstonia, she couldn't help the occasional pinches of homesickness.

Taking a deep breath, Olivia just smiled again. At least she knew, all her friends were happy like her. Lukas could write to his heart's content in the middle of the woods, Axel was blowing up one bundle of TNT after the other in Boomtown, Jesse and Petra were out exploring the great unknown.

And she was the assistant of one of the world's greatest engineers.

What was there to not smile about?

Olivia stopped at the edge of town, staring out over the dark ocean. The moon's silvery reflection was rippling in the waves, making the sea itself seem alive.

Slowly Olivia lowered herself down, sitting on the edge of the drop off that lead into the water below. She raised her gaze, gazing at the breathtaking constellations above her.

She smiled again, knowing those same stars were shining down on each of her friends as well.

I swear when I was writing this, it felt a lot longer than 913 words... So I'm not happy with the length of this one shot, at all. (And mentally kicking myself for not knowing how to extend it, because I like it the way it is)

But, like I said at the start of this challenge, I want to try and be less hard on myself with these. The one shot isn't bad, it's just short. So I'm not about to call this a failure!

I wanted to try and focus on Olivia a bit, since I feel like I exclude her and Axel very easily. I couldn't think about anything to write for Axel just yet, but Olivia at least got some spotlight!

I tried to kind of interpret what living in Redstonia would be from her perspective. For example, this is very different to how I would write an evening in Beacontown for Jesse. And I think I did okay!

Since it's still kinda bugging me, tell me what you guys thought of this! Did you enjoy it, despite the length? Are you okay with getting such a short one shot today?

Don't get me wrong, I don't intend to make a lot of them this short! I don't prefer short one shots at all! But in the case of it happening, be sure to give me your opinion on shorter one shots.

My excuse is having been on the road for 90% of today due to the friggen nice weather x'D

Anyhow, enough rambling, before the A/N gets longer than the actual one shot.

I hope you all enjoyed this one shot, and I'll see you tomorrow with whichever prompt I- oh wait, tomorrow's prompt is pre-picked XD
