Chapter 2 - Hope's Denouement

Cole's POV

As we filed onto the bus, we were all in a strange bubbly sort of mood. We were all pretty exited for –

What? What's with the confused look? We were getting on the bus for the field trip and – Oh, right. The field trip.

The parents and Mr. Schoenbeck put together a surprise field trip for our last day of school to Millennium Park. Pretty nice of them, huh?

Little did we know...

Anyway, as we filed onto the bus, we were all in a strange bubbly sort of mood. We were all pretty exited for the trip, seeing as we basically got to run around and do nothing all day. I personally would like nothing more that to turf and chill with the squad all day, but unfortunately, the parents had also set up some "fun" games for us to play! Whoopee! I gagged at the sight of beanbags and colored plastic buckets. I saw Evan L. greedily eyeing the snacks. It was going to be a classic 305 day, I could tell.

Fortunately, the Meme Teme had already prepared for a last day of school lunch out, so while everyone else was pretzels and drinking expired Cool-Aid, we were feasting on snacks and candy with only the freshest chemicals and most delicious of artificial flavors.

"So guys, I guess this is going to be the Meme Teme's last day at school together, huh?" I said sadly. "NEVER! I REFUSE TO LET OUR SQUAD BE SPLIT APART!" Julian bellowed. "WE WILL FIND A WAY!!!" "But what if we, didn't, find a way?" Alex asked mysteriously. Steven made a triangle around his eye.

A crowd of people were starting to form around us, asking for our food. Julian made a big show of eating a bag of BBQ chips. Suddenly, Hana lunged for the chips. Julian ducked out of the way. Suddenly, it was a chase. We split up in different directions. I ran with Alex and Julian, and Jack ran with Steven. All the adults were in a tent somewhere, and the mom that was supposed to be watching us was sleeping.

As we ran, we started to get farther and farther away from where the adults were. I started slowing down, but then I noticed something was wrong. The half of the class that were chasing us weren't simply having fun. They were ravenous. I yelped and sped up again. A quick glance revealed Jack and Steven were having the same problem. I sighed. Typical 305 shenanigans.

Elias clawed at me and tore a hole in my shirt. We were all losing stamina fast, and our pursuers showed no sign of stopping. Alex stumbled and was almost trampled. Suddenly, I had an idea that could save us. "Guys, head for the Bean!" I yelled over the chaos. They nodded, and we turned slightly.

As we drew closer to the Bean, we came closer and closer to being torn apart by our enemies. My shirt was practically torn to shreds, Alex had gashes all over his legs, and Julian was bleeding from being hit by a slab of stone. We were all in pain.

When we got to the Bean, we all climbed up as fast as we could. To our horror, it was slippery and very steep. As we began our climb, My shoe was torn off and was flung into the crowd. I felt their fingernails scratch against me as they climbed after us. I tried to kick them down, but there were too many. Finally, I made it to the top. So did Alex. And so did Nora. She hissed, and I shoved her off the Bean. Unfortunately, I lost balance, and fell a few feet down. I was holding on by one hand. But then, I looked down, and I saw Julian, struggling to climb up. Tommy and Dyanara were both clinging to his legs, tearing apart his legs. His pants were soaked in blood. "Cole! HELP!" he shrieked. With my one good hand, I grabbed him and tried to lift him up. He shook Tommy off, but Dyanara stayed firm. "We want all the best snacks," she hissed. "And we will get them from inside of you!" She dug her teeth into his calve. He screamed in pain.

"Cole! You have to let go! Save yourself!" He yelled to me. "It's the only way." Although I didn't want to admit it, I was sweating profusely. The strain of holding up both me and Julian was too much. "No! I can hold on! We can both make it!" But even as I said it, I felt my grip on the Bean weaken. If I kept holding Julian, I was going to fall.

"Cole! I'm so sorry!" he yelled. "Forgive me!" I felt him slip out of my grip a little further. "Goodbye, Julian..." I sobbed. Then, he let go. I watched him fall into the mob that was our class, almost in slow motion. Tears streamed out of his eyes. He landed in the hoard with a sickening snap! As I crawled on top of the Bean, I watched them maul him to death. I wanted to look away, but I was transfixed. Before long, he was lying in an inch-deep pool of his own blood. My vision started to blur. I threw up over the side. "NOOOOOOOOOO!!!" I fell into Alex's arms. I screamed a horrendous retching sound. He dragged me to the center of the Bean, where it would only be a matter of time before we too were killed.

I could barely see as the class climbed up either side of the Bean, all of them moaning "Fooooood." Eventually, almost all of them were on top with us, closing in. I didn't know where Jack and Steven were. I hoped they were OK. But maybe they had met with the same fate as Julian.

Just as they were about to annihilate us, I heard a large groaning sound. We all looked around, trying to identify it. It sounded like it was coming from... Below us?

Suddenly, the Bean shook beneath us. And that was the last thing I remember before it collapsed.
