CXXIX. Lost Boy ➟ Pietro

Song | Lost Boy by Ruth B

-

"'Run, run, lost boy,' they say to me.
'Away from all of reality.'
Neverland is home to lost boys like me
And lost boys like me are free."

-

Sokovia was floating in the sky. Ultron had just about won. It didn't matter that you and your two childhood friends--Wanda and Pietro--were there to help the Avengers. A bunch of lost kids who never wanted to grow up. It didn't matter that he was fast, she was magical, and you could summon the spirits of the dead. You were stuck on the rock with the citizens of your homeland.

You were all going to die there.

Then SHIELD came with transports that helped everyone get off before Ultron flipped the switch and turned Sokovia into a meteor. You used your necromancy abilities to keep the Ultron bots at bay, protecting your people. Every now and then, you saw Wanda's scarlet streams fill the city, or Pietro's trail of blue. You couldn't help but smile when you saw them in their element.

Then you saw a child screaming for his mother, pinned down by several bots. You took off from your safe place on the transport, using your powers to clear the way. When you got to him, you pulled him into your arms, telling him everything was going to be all right.

Then you heard it: the rapid-fire of a machine gun. When you looked up, you saw Ultron firing at you as he flew overhead. You knew you couldn't stop those bullets; your spirit-manipulation only worked on large objects. You knew those bullets would phase right through them and hit you.

You turned you back, protecting the child. If you were going to be hit, maybe you could save him.

The time for the bullets to hit came and went. When you turned, you saw a horrible reality.

Pietro, standing in front of you, bullets piercing his body.

He turned and looked at you with scared blue eyes, muttering something about not seeing this coming.

Then he fell.

You put the child down and ran to him, dropping to your knees to take his bleeding body into your arms. You begged for him to stay with you, to stay alive. But all he could do was look up at you with teary blue eyes and utter the last thing he'd ever say:

I love you.
