"And after nearly six months in the future, I realized I'd been buying the wrong underwear!"
You burst out laughing as Steve finishes his story about the most awkward thing he's had to deal with in the 21st century. You've both just finished a mission in California, and the Quinjet if automatically flying the two of you back to New York. You're both still in costume, not having the energy to move from your seated positions on the floor.
Steve laughs along with you, running a hand through his blond hair. "Not my proudest moment, I'll give you that."
"That was golden," you gasp, wiping your eyes from joyful tears. "I bet Tony loved that."
"He will never find out, you understand."
You mock salute, forcing your expression to turn serious. "Yes, Cap'n."
Steve falls silent after that, his laughter trailing off. You see the look on his face change from happiness to something else.
"What's wrong?" you ask.
Steve looks back up at you, shrugging. "Just something Fury said to me a few days ago."
"What did he say?"
Steve sighs, "That he was happy I had a heart of stone, that it would keep me and the people I cared about safer."
"And that bothered you?"
Steve chuckles once. "Yeah, but only 'cause he's right." He shrugs, looking away. "Talking to you makes me wish it wasn't."
You give Steve a small smile. "No one truly has a heart of stone, Steve. Least of all is you. Your heart is as big as anyone's I've ever seen."
Steve's eyes turn towards you. "Doesn't mean I'm not scared of love, of making new attachments. All the ones I made before are gone. How can anyone not be afraid of love?"
You pause, then say, "Being afraid is normal. Being afraid to love, even more so. I'm afraid every time I go on missions, but I continue to do so because I know it's worth it. So, Steve Rogers, there's a question you're gonna have to ask yourself one day: is love worth it? Are you going to let fear win...or are you going to learn to love again?"
Steve looks at you with adoration as the Quinjet lands. You stand to your feet, offering Steve a hand. "What do you say, Captain?"
He nods, taking your hand and pulling himself up. Your close proximity makes your breath catch in your throat. "I think you're right," Steve whispers, moving his hands to cup your face. "It's time to move on."
You smile, closing your eyes as he moves his face closer to yours. "I think that's a wise idea."
Steve chuckles lowly. "And what would you say if I asked to start with you?"
"I'd say..." You stop talking as his mouth moves against yours. Your hands find his waist, pulling him close by his utility belt. Steve's hands move through your hair as he backs you up against the wall of the ship, kisses coming faster.
Eventually, he pulls away, giving you a final peck on the lips. "I've wanted to do that for a while," he mutters, breathing coming out heavily.
You grin up at him. "I'm glad you finally did."
Tony's voice comes over the com, his face popping up on the screen on the other side of the room. "Nice job, team. Glad you're back safe and sound."
"Nice to be back, Tony," you exclaim, but you and Steve don't move away from each other.
"Where are you guys? I can't see you?"
"Go away, Tony, we'll be in in a few," Steve says, moving to kiss your neck.
You try to keep you laughter down as Tony disembodied voice says, "Uh...guys? What's going on? ...Guys?"
