18: Describe the setting

Inner Demon

It’s a modern–ish setting. I say “ish” ‘cause I imagine the timeline more along the mid to late 00’s. I don’t know why. Reyna’s hometown is the fictional city Esterwood located in Washington. When she is at Amon’s house, she is somewhere in the Rio Grande Valley in Texas. It’s hot and dry there and sucks.

The other half of the book takes place in the demon world. The environment is very simple there. It has black skies without any stars or clouds but there is still a light source that comes from it that’s bright enough to illuminate the surroundings. Green plains make up the majority of the world. Just simple green plains where the grass is really dark and lush.

Occasionally, trees interrupt the scenery. These trees are HUGE, smallest one being as tall as a three–story house or so. The really tall ones have roots that curl and arch out enough to create a wooden labyrinth. The leaves on the trees are red and literally carry the blood of humans. It ties in with the whole balance of the demon and human world and the recycling of human/demon essences between the two worlds.

Demon World is very vast, but there are some sources of water which are rare encounters. Demon World perhaps even has an ocean, but who knows what could be found there.

Act of a Demon

Most of the book takes place in the demon world. Briefly, Reyna and Dante visit the human world. Currently, they are in the Spirit realm.

The particular realm they are in is one of many. It was specially manifested for Reyna and the others to exist without actually dying. It still holds the properties and elements of the Spirit world, however, and so any Spirits act as if dead because it is in the Spirit realm where souls are collected and arranged accordingly.

It is mostly white, giant room that can change its size at will and has the ability to create smaller rooms within itself. While this is the only Spirit realm visited by Reyna and the others, it is safe to assume the other realms of the Spirit world are different in both appearance and size.

Calathus

It’s mostly a fantasy setting, but I imagine the world, or the kingdom at least, to be some tweaked medieval times. The environment feels like it’s from the past and the speech, depending on who is talking, is not modern. There aren’t luxuries like electricity or pluming in this world and there are vast cultural and class structures without having to worry about being “politically correct” in how to address them in terms of speech or anything else.

Heh. Politically correct. Anyways…

There is a magical element to it, even if living in a village or city. Creatures with magick exist both inside a populated city and in the wilderness and there is also the threat of Magus beasts looming throughout the entire kingdom.
