Chapter 12, Magical Experimentation
a/n logic of magic has been broken for this chap >.<
Before Harry and friends had apparated to NYC, Harry had found an old 'switching spell' in a book Hermione got Ginny into, that Ginny had pestered Harry to read. And yes, Annabeth did do this to Percy several times but that's not relevant to this. Point is, Harry wanted to learn the spell except for one crucial detail...
It had an age restriction.
How a spell had an age restriction was beyond him, but it was certainly an older spell as you had to be eighteen to use the spell or have permission from someone eighteen years or older. He would have tried it but he lacked that permission. Fred and George were running their store in Diagon Alley. Mr. Weasley or Mrs. Weasley would probably not approve of such spell. The other Weasley siblings were nowhere to be seen so he obviously couldn't ask them. Then he went to his 'family reunion' and he knew that he couldn't ask any of his two aunts or uncles as they were muggle.
Then who he would ask came to him, his older cousin who happened to be eighteen, Percy. Things may have gotten off on a rocky start with him and his cousin, but Percy had grown on him during the three days as bonding time. While true he could ask Annabeth, Percy was probably someone who he could understand better and besides he was the first eighteen year old to come to Harry's mind so now the question was: how would he ask him?
And the answer came simply to him, just ask him straightforward. Percy to him seemed the kind of guy who'd take risks, even stupid ones. So he went up and asked him.
"-sigh- And you need me to do what?" said Percy who was confused by what Harry had asked him. Percy knew Harry was an of-age wizard so he should be able to do the spell.
"Well, I need you to give me permission to do the spell so I can use it."
"I thought you were of-age?"
"I am, this spell however needs someone eighteen years or older to cast it or someone eighteen or older to give permission to someone younger to be able to cast it."
"So you want me to give you my permission so you can cast some spell that has an age restriction?"
"Basically yes."
"Sure I guess."
"Oh and uh, do you think we could do this in a secret place?"
"Why?"
"Well, we aren't allowed to show muggles, or mortals as you call them."
"You showed my mom, aunt Maddie, uncle Jack, and cousin Jazz."
"Their family, the rule doesn't apply to them."
"-sigh- Fine, but we're taking Danny with us."
"Why?!"
"You owe him for us not being able to your bonding activity, and he'd probably just go invisible and follow us either way."
"Fine, we'll take him."
"Good, now you have to tell him."
"Why me?"
"You're the one asking to do this, not me."
"Fine I'll ask him, anything else?"
"Oh one more thing, I hope you don't mind the dark and un-human noises." said Percy who then went into his room and looked for something that Harry had no idea what it was.
That last thing Percy had said to him, was a bit unsettling. But Harry brushed it off, he'd faced much worse than the dark and non-human beings. One of the latter being his worst enemy, Lord Voldemort.
Harry then asked Danny to come, and his younger cousin obliged. He seemed to be able to go on with anything. They then went and met Percy who had a bad with something in it and he led them to an alleyway.
"So how are you supposed to get us there?" asked Harry.
"You'll see." said Percy who pulled something out of the bag. That something was ground beef.
"What's that for?" asked Danny.
"Just wait, its coming."
As if on que a black hellhound with a cross-bone smiley face collar came out of the shadows, startling Harry. Danny was used to seeing huge menacing dogs, specifically one that could turn into a puppy and then into a giant menacing dog.
"Ahhhhh! What's that doing here!" exclaimed Harry.
Percy approached the hellhound.
"Down girl.... Good girl!"
"What are you doing talking to it!" exclaimed Harry.
"Relax wiz, this is my hellhound, Ms. O'Leary. She's our transportation."
"So were supposed to ride her?" asked Danny looking at the giant hellhound.
"Sort of, I hope you aren't afraid of the dark." said Percy and he climbed on her back and motioned for Danny and Harry to do the same. Once the two were both on, he whispered something in her ear and she leapt right at a shadowy wall.
Harry braced himself for an impact.
Danny was about to make them intangible so they could pass through the wall.
The impact however, never came. Harry and Danny then knew what Percy was talking about "being afraid of the dark" because they were literally traveling through darkness. Traveling through darkness at a very fast pace. For Harry it was like riding a thestral again, something he said he would not repeat. For Danny it was like flying at his top speed only multiplied. Soon it ended and they ended up in a forest by a lake.
"Woah! That-"
"-was very-"
"-dark and-"
"-fast!" said Danny and Harry who had accidentally spoken in unison.
"You get used to it." said Percy.
Percy then gave Mrs. O' Leary the rest of the ground beef and she fell asleep by the trees.
"It'll be a while before she has the strength to shadow travel again, so Harry what's the plan?"
Harry then explained what Percy would have to do to give Harry permission to do the spell.
"So all I do is say something, and you can do the spell?"
"Are all spell like that?" asked Danny.
"Not all of them, there probably are some like this that you have to be of age to do." said Harry.
"Ok so do you want me to give you permission to do the spell or not?" said Percy.
"Yes please."
"Here goes...
I Perseus Achilles Jackson give Harry James Potter my permission to do the switching spell!" exclaimed Percy.
Much like when Sally gave her blessing to Percy in order for him to bear the curse of Achilles, there was no immediate sign that his permission had been given. Only Danny saw it. It took shape of a beam surrounding Percy then going over too and circling Harry before it was absorbed by him. Danny figured if he was the only one who could see the aura around the two demigods then he might as well be able to see stuff like this, unseen but powerful.
"Did it work?" asked Percy, "I didn't see anything or feel anything"
"I saw something." said Danny.
"Well there's one way to find out." said Harry before yelling out the spell.
"Commercium!" he exclaimed and pointed his wand at two things, a flower and a tree. Upon hitting its target the spell made the flower grow the exact same kind of leaves the tree had and the tree grew petals exactly like the flower.
"And it worked" said Danny.
Harry the shouted the spell again. This time he aimed for something else that is not of any significance. As he was doing this, his magic had grown immensely as if something was deliberately lending him their strength. He lost his aim on his insignificant target and the spell backfired onto the three cousins. They each felt a burning sensation when hit and blacked out.
a/n cliff hanger cause why not?
