Chapter 14: Never Ending Story

THE EVENTS TOOK place inside the gymnasium haunted me all over again. I closed my eyes and remembered it all as Mike stared at me, waiting for me to continue the story. The wind brushed against my skin, and I shivered as the cold hugged me from behind. I opened my eyes and took a deep breath as I averted my gaze to where they found Candice's body.

"Rayne?" I called again amidst the darkness.

I tried so hard to navigate the gymnasium. Rayne's voice echoed within the whole place, but I couldn't locate where the voice came from. Someone had been playing games with me, and I already knew the mastermind, and it was no other than Morgan.

The young woman wanted something from me because if not, why did my life suddenly become a nightmare? It all started when I succumbed to my darkest desire. I wanted some changes in the environment. But I could never make a change when Dawn and her friends were still around. I needed to get rid of them in order to live, not just survive.

But death was out of the option.

I didn't want them to die, to be honest.

I stopped walking in the middle of the basketball court. I was all alone in the gymnasium, which made me nervous when I heard flowing water from one of the showers. It was getting louder and louder that I almost jumped in my place when different kinds of balls dribbled within the court. The night was so cold, but too much sweat started to flow from my face down to my neck.

"Rayne?" my voice cracked as I began to pray.

Damn it, my feet were glued to the ground as soon as the doors closed on their own, and the balls stopped in just a snap of a finger. The place became too quiet for my liking, and I didn't care to examine the place when I heard an eerie voice echoing within the area. Sometimes, Morgan seemed whispering to my ears, but I couldn't dare to look back.

I almost shit in my pants as soon as the front door banged open. My right hand rested on my chest as I slowly rubbed in circles to calm my throbbing heart.

Someone stood outside the gymnasium, and that someone was no other than the woman in a white yet bloody and dirty dress. Her damp hair was in front, but it seemed like she was looking at me with the intent to scare the hell out of me. She had no footwear, and every step she took created a print on the ground.

"Morgan. . ." I called her name unknowingly, and in just a second, she was already standing before me with bulged red eyes.

I screamed at the top of my lungs as I ran away from her. I didn't care where my feet were taking me. The door suddenly closed, so I had to go through the shower room for safety. The faucet was still on, and the lavatory overflowed with dirty water that nobody knew where it came from. . . from the well? Shit.

Later on, I heard Morgan's footsteps, like she was following me from behind, and this time, she hummed to a lullaby. I tried not to make a sound as I tried to sneak inside the locker room. The hope inside me dropped as I tried to open the lockers quietly, but they were locked. Morgan's voice became nearer and nearer until one locker was left unlocked.

The locker was unoccupied, which was a piece of good news. I tried to fit in and covered my mouth with my right hand to avoid making unnecessary noise. The humming became more audible until I peeked through the whole of the locker, and I saw her. She stood right before me where I hid myself. I bit my lips to shut myself and suddenly stopped breathing the moment Morgan's feet turned toward where I was hiding.

Go away.

Don't open the damn door.

Every part of me was shaking due to uncontrollable fear. I glued several times, and the moment Morgan stopped humming, I knew my life was finally over.

One.

Two.

Three.

The door burst open, and I jolted up as I screamed with my eyes closed. I punched and kicked the air without any apparent reason, totally losing my mind that night.

"Michelle. . ."

I shook my head several times.

No more playing mind games with me. I had enough, and if my life would come to an end. . . maybe this was fate.

"Michelle," someone called again. "Just look at me and calm down."

Listening to her meant something else to me. I didn't want to die without a fight. My survival instinct wanted me not to stop until someone hugged me while whispering comforting words.

"MICHELLE!"

And I gave up.

I had no energy left to fight for my pathetic life.

"Did Dawn and her friends lock you again?"

My forehead creased in confusion. But Dawn already died. . . right? What did she mean by the word "again" when I wasn't locked inside from the very beginning?

I decided to open my eyes, only to meet Samantha's eyes. I was about to heave a deep sigh of relief when her face suddenly changed to Morgan's. She was smiling. . . laughing at my mental state.

I screamed as I began to punch and kick the air with my eyes closed, and the place became quiet. The sudden shift of atmosphere made me uncomfortable until I heard Rayne's voice from afar. I jolted up, opened my eyes, and realized everything was a mere dust of a nightmare.

Morgan wasn't around.

The locker where I hid myself. . . the door had its door still closed.
