Review
September 5, a little after midnight, Death-Cast calls Mateo Torrez and Rufus Emeterio to give them some bad news: They're going to die today.
Mateo and Rufus are total strangers, but, for different reasons, they're both looking to make a new friend on their End Day. The good news: There's an app for that. It's called the Last Friend, and through it, Rufus and Mateo are about to meet up for one last great adventure—to live a lifetime in a single day.
Summary
Wow. This was both incredibly tragic but oddly uplifting. Firstly, I just want to applaud Adam Silvera for coming up with a very creative way to explore the idea of mortality, love, and friendship.
Secondly, I really did come to warm to these characters. At points I found Mateo slightly annoying but overall it was really interesting to watch him develop as a character and explore new things. Rufus had a special spot in my heart, and he was a real sweetheart.
I loved this story, and I thought it was heartwarming, thought provoking, and a bit of a tear jerker. The ending is so abrupt and sudden it felt like someone had crashed into me, and I guess that was the point. Despite the title, there was a small part of me that was hoping that the pair would wake up and find that it had all been a lucid dream.
