1st Night

A/N: This is based off of my own experience. It may be a lot to take in.

"It's going to be okay, Keith." Mr. Kogane assured his son. "But we can't keep you safe. It's time to get some treatment."

"But I'm fine-"

"No." Mr. Kogane said to his son as they sat in the ER waiting room.

"Kogane?" A nurse asked.

Mr. Kogane stood. "Yes."

"Come on back."

They stood and walked past the double doors until they walked behind a curtain. Keith sat on the hospital bed, awkwardly.

"What's going on this evening?"

Mr. Kogane was sitting in a stiff chair beside the bed. "Keith?"

"It was a mistake." he defended.

"My wife and I found Keith standing on the edge of a bridge."

The nurse looked up from the clipboard. "Is this true?"

Keith swallowed. "Yeah- but-"

"I'm going to call our resident psychiatrist and have her do a wellness check. Does that sound alright?"

Keith rubbed the arm of his hoodie. "Yeah, I guess."

The nurse disappeared and Keith turned to his father.

"What?" He asked.

"Where's mom?"

Mr. Kogane sighed. "This has been especially distressing to your mother. I think it's best if it's just us."

They waited, awkwardly in silence until the nurse returned. "We're going to need a urine sample and have you change into a gown." She said, passing the gown and cup to him, along with a pair of hospital socks. "You can put your personal items in here."

Keith looked at his father. "Some privacy?" He asked.

"Sure." He replied, stepping out into the hall while Keith changed. He put his clothes in the plastic bag and changed into the gown. He went into the bathroom to get a urine sample and then set it on the counter. His father came back into the room- he had been talking with the staff. A nurse had taken away his clothes.

The psychiatrist knocked on the glass outside the room before coming in.

"Keith?" She asked. "How are you feeling?"

"Anxious. Where did they take my clothes?"

"I'm Dr. Openshaw." She introduced. "I am the resident psychiatrist here on the floor. We have some concerns about what happened earlier and we want to keep you in the hospital for a bit."

"What?" He breathed. Mr. Kogane shifted, nervously.

"Keith- it's for the best."

"For how long? Where?"

"The amount of time is different for everyone. Some people only stay for 24 hours."

Keith bit his cheek. It looked like he didn't have a choice.

"And we have really good news- there's a bed open in our adolescent unit upstairs. We'll move you there after your father fills out some paperwork. Try and relax. Your nurse will bring you something to eat. There's a security officer outside who is going to be watching you. He's coming in soon."

Keith stopped listening. So this is where one bad decision was going to lead him? No. It was more than one bad decision.

True to their word, a security guard came in and sat in a chair, watching Keith who ate peanut butter crackers and ginger ale silently.

After about an hour, his father came back and kissed his forehead. "We're bringing you some clothes tomorrow."

"What about my shoes? Can I have those?"

He shook his head. "We'll bring your stuff tomorrow. Just focus on getting through tonight. I love you."

"Yeah." Keith breathed. "I love you, too."

He watched his father disappear and a nurse bring in a wheelchair. "Hop on. You're going upstairs." Keith swallowed but obeyed.

"You know I can walk, right?" He asked.

"Yes, this is just standard."

"Okay."

When they got up to the floor, the hallway lights were on but all of the doors were closed. One towards the end of the hall had a man in an office chair waiting outside and that's where Keith ended up.

"That's your roommate, Lance. He's sleeping. Your bed is this one- by the door."

"Why is there a guard out here?"

"That's for Lance." They said.

"Try and get some sleep. Wake up is at 7."

It was only 9 but Keith was tired so it worked out. He hesitantly sat down on the bed, finally relaxing and laying down before staring at the ceiling. That was the last thing he remembered.
