chapter four ━ what he'd do for her

━━━━★✼☆。━━━━

❝ best friends turned soulmates ❞

━━━━★✼☆。━━━━

WHEN ATHENA HAD woken up from a night's rest, the familiar scent of two other werewolves had dulled. It didn't take her long to realize that Thomas's scent was nowhere in or near the house. A few days had passed since the wolf had joined her in the mansion. Klaus was still paranoid, not allowing his sister to even be in the same room as Thomas unless he was there himself. Surprisingly enough, Thomas didn't seem to mind; he still talked to her like he normally did and acted as the same calm guy he was.

This was odd because werewolves did have violent tendencies and a temper. But Athena figured that she had not witnessed it just yet. He kept to himself, reading or talking to one of the people in the household. Rebekah grew fond of him, admiring his protectiveness over her sister. Hayley treated him like her pack leader (which is how she was with Athena). Klaus was the only one who disliked him. Athena wasn't even sure if disliked was a strong enough word for it.

He had threatened, tried to kill, and was a flat-out jerk to Thomas. What made Athena smile was that her newfound friend didn't take it to heart and kept going. So when she went into his room where he was staying to see his stuff gone, her heart plummeted.

Loud stomps echoed through the house as the youngest Mikaelson sibling went down to the study where Klaus was with a compelled Cami. They both turned to her and her brother sighed. "Must you be so loud, sister?"

Athena gritted her teeth. "Where is he?"

"You're going to have to be more-"

"Where is Thomas!?"

Klaus crossed the room to her. Cami was watching with her eyebrows knitted, confusion sweeping over her face. True, she had been compelled, but the blonde did not understand anything that was happening. Klaus had talked about Athena before though she had not gotten the chance to meet her. "Back at his apartment where he belongs. Are you so stupid as to believe that he truly cares for you? You met him not too long ago, Athena. Don't be so naive."

She lowered her gaze to the ground, seeing his point. Thomas was nice to her, a bit too nice. It was only because he knew her from their time together on the Other Side. Klaus didn't care obviously. "It didn't mean you had to get rid of him, Nik. He's a friend."

Athena began to exit and Klaus called out to her. "He'll break your heart. Don't say I didn't warn you."

Ignoring what he said, she continued to the city, journeying through the street. She wasn't walking for long before Marcel appeared in her line of sight. Rolling her eyes, the teen dodged him. He simply smirked, appearing at her side. "What brings you out in the open, little Mikaelson."

"Don't call me that. And to answer your question, I'm looking for Thomas."

They walked down another road. Marcel looked annoyed but kept the smirk. "Ah, looking for your soulmate, huh?"

"Do you know where he stays?"

Marcel stopped, making her stop. He crossed his arms over his chest. "Maybe, what's in it for me?"

Athena mimicked his movements. "Not getting killed by a hybrid. How's that?"

Her swift wit could knock anyone down in a matter of seconds. She could also knock anyone down just by her bare hands. Marcel knew this and decided to push his limits, knowing very well what the seemingly young girl was capable of.

The vampire switched onto his other foot. "Fine, if you go down that street—" he pointed in a direction. "—and take a left, there's an apartment complex down that road on your right. He's in room twenty-five."

Raising an eyebrow hesitantly, she took a step toward him. "Okay, thanks, Marcel." Athena left without giving him any time to say anything else.

What did make sense was that Marcel was being truthful. Athena found the apartment rather quickly, knocking on door twenty-five, already smelling Thomas's scent. He opened the door, his hair wet from having taken a shower not too long ago.

"Hey, Athena," he scratched the back of his neck awkwardly. "Your brother kinda kicked me out so..."

She gave him a soft smile. "I heard. Sorry about that. He's just worried that's all."

Thomas nodded. "Yeah, I don't blame him though. Would you like to come in?"

Athena entered and he shut the door behind her. Gazing around, she noticed that the apartment was extremely clean. A couch sat on one side of the room, a coffee table and a tv nearby. There was no wall separating the room from the kitchen so there was a clear view of that room, a large doorway opening into the dining room. Down the hall on her right were three doors which she guessed were the master bedroom, guest room, and a closet. There must have been a bathroom in the master bedroom.

"It's not much," he said when he saw her look. "But it's enough. I try to keep it clean."

"What no alcohol?" she teased. "Most guys would have trash everywhere."

He laughed, going over to one cabinet in the kitchen. A bottle of bourbon appeared. Athena shook her head, grinning. "You going to pour me a glass?"

Thomas brought out two glass cups and filled them halfway. "Well, I'm not like most guys." He gave her a glass, taking a sip of his. "Last I checked half of the guys in this city like to party."

"You don't like parties?"

"No. Why do you?"

Athena shook her head, sitting at one of the seats at the bar. "Despise them. It's probably because I hate dresses." He laughed again. They were left in silence before she pursed her lip, staring at him as she debated with herself. "Thomas?"

"Hm?"

She tucked a piece of hair behind her ear. "Tell me another story."

Thomas sat next to her, setting his fingers against the brim of the glass. "Alright."

———

Hours they spent just talking. He told her a few stories which led them to the couch, facing each other, their knees touching. Athena had ended up laying her head on his shoulder, causing Thomas to shift to his side so she'd be more comfortable. More stories were spoken and her eyes drifted closed, her heart slowing down to a soft rhythmic beat. Thomas dug his head into the crook of her neck, pulling her to his chest.

Finally having her back felt like a miracle. But knowing the fragility of the girl he held made him tense. Thomas had held her so delicately, afraid of breaking her though he knew that she never would. Athena was strong. Klaus hated his guts, what would he do if he ever found out how much Thomas truly cared about her? One thing was crystal clear: Klaus would torture him till he begged for death.

A light illuminated the room that had grown dark, only a small light int he kitchen on. Thomas pulled his head up, his red head tickling Athena's cheek. Her phone that lied on the coffee table was bright, showing a text from Hayley that read "Bayou clinic with doctor".

Sensing that one of their people were in danger, Thomas put his hand on Athena's head, brushing softly. "Athena, Athena wake up."

The hybrid rubbed her eyes, glaring at him. "What?" Once she saw his concerned look, she flashed up to sit. "What happened?" Both of them stood up. She grabbed her phone, seeing the text. With a nod, they both sprinted out of the apartment and to his car that awaited in the parking lot.

Just in time to see Hayley fighting with several witches and warlocks, Athena flashed to snap the last one's neck. Thomas ran up behind her and helped Hayley up. "We got your text, are you alright?"

She brushed off the dirt that coated her clothes. "Yeah. The stupid witch tricked me into getting a checkup. She tried knocking me out with a syringe."

Lights appeared and their heads snapped over. They weren't fast enough because one man moved to shot them. Athena reacted and flashed in front of Thomas before he got hit. The arrow went through her chest, temporarily killing her.

Thomas yelled her name, his electric blue eyes flashing over to the warlocks. Forgetting about Hayley standing there, he raced over to the men. His arm went flying to one's face, knocking them out cold. With one swipe, the warlock was killed. More men appeared. His bones cracked and in his place was a chocolate brown furred wolf.

Hayley went wide-eyed as she witnessed the red-headed king rip apart every last one of the men. Another wolf appeared in her line of sight, staring right at her. She took a step toward it but then it looked over at Thomas. The alpha nodded. The wolf bowed down, casting a glance over at Athena before trotting off.

Klaus and Rebekah ran over, seeing their fallen sister and a bloody wolf. Rebekah went over to Athena and pulled out the arrow. Instantly, the veins disappeared and her skin went back to normal. Thomas went over and nodded to Klaus who nodded back gratefully. Even though he still didn't trust the new addition, he could see that the Nyx's loyalty might truly lie with Athena.

The said hybrid sat up, holding her stomach. She cursed earning a sharp growl from Thomas. Athena sighed, allowing her siblings to help her up.

"What happened?" Klaus questioned, going over to Hayley, checking for wounds. "How are you healed?"

Hayley looked tired. "It was only a little scratch from one of the guys. And I'm a werewolf remember?"

Klaus denied it, turning to his sister who had slowly begun to heal. She had a look on her face that could only be described as pure annoyance for the reason that she had gotten shot (even though she did take the arrow for Thomas). "Your child healed her, Nik. The baby has vampire blood remember?"

"The witches were supposed to protect her! When I get my hands on Sophie Deveraux-" Klaus started angrily.

"It wasn't Sophie. It was Agnes," Hayley revealed.

Athena felt a body press to her side, gently brushing her hand. Thomas's wolf was next to her. She didn't push him away and let out a sigh, running a hand through her hair. Klaus was still going about his outburst. "Fine! Agnes, Sophie, it's all the same to me! I'll slaughter the lot of them!"

"Not if Elijah gets there first," Rebekah spoke up.

The words gained all of their attention's. Athena's eyes shined with hope. "Elijah? You found him?"

"He's been in touch, and he has a plan. All he asks is that we take care of Hayley and allow Thomas to stay with us."

Klaus didn't appreciate the last bit and muttered under his breath. "Well Elijah can kiss my-"

"That's great. I'll take Thomas back to his place to get his stuff so he can move back in," Athena smiled, but not before giving her brother a distasteful glare. "See you guys later."

Athena started off, Thomas following behind with a wolfish grin. He flashed off, making her laugh and speeding after him.

———

She took a measure of two deep breaths before knocking on the guest bedroom door. Thomas opened it up, new clothes on from the previous ones having been ripped to shreds when he shifted. Instead of going inside, Athena stayed at the door.

"I just wanted to say thank you. For everything you've been doing. You could be siding with Marcel but you aren't. Despite what everyone says about my family, you fought with us. Many wouldn't care. So thank you."

He smiled, leaning against the doorframe. "Don't thank me. I just want you safe and happy. I'll always fight on whatever side you're on no matter the sacrifices I have to make."

"But why? Just because we're destined to rule with each other? Why would you go with a fate like that?"

Thomas frowned, grabbing her hand and bring her inside. He shut the door. "How can you say that? Being tied to a certain fate may not be the best feeling, but knowing that you won't be alone isn't. I spent twenty years alone, walking in those woods. Fate may be cruel but it always has its reasons. I would've spent an eternity alone if Esther hadn't trapped you in that coffin. Maybe us being together is because of how our lives were. They might have been opposites, but we still were chosen."

She looked down at the ground with a guilty expression as he continued. "I'm sorry if this isn't what you wanted—"

"It is," she told him. "That's what scares me. I've never loved before considering that I would've been thirteen for the rest of my life is Esther hadn't done that spell. And finding out that I had a soulmate, someone who would love me for me, it scared me."

Thomas sighed. "You know I can wait. However long it takes. It doesn't matter as long as I know that what your doing with your life is what you want."

Athena looked up at him and smiled slightly. "Even if it takes a hundred years."

He intertwined their hands together, smiling back at her. "Even if it takes a thousand or more."
