11 - AVENGERS ASSEMBLE
"COME ON, KAE, WE'VE GOT ONE LAST FIGHT." Peter's voice is the first thing she hears. The last thing she remembered was becoming dust, her consciousness fading away in Peter's arms. Now, she sees those around her. Mantis, Strange, Peter Quill, everyone who turned to dust. They remain on the planet Titan where they faded to dust, but everything feels different, disorientated. She is not where she is supposed to be. Judging by the looks on everyone else's faces, they feel the same disorienting feeling she does.
"You guys ready to go?" Dr. Strange asks before channeling his portals. The look of concentration on his face gave her an inkling that there was something else going on. Something more. "It's been five years, come on they need us."
"What's going on?" she asked in a dazed voice, pulling her mask on as quickly as possible. The urgency was thick in the air and she knew things were going to change very quickly. Just before she could pull her mask on, Peter grabbed her in a hug. He squeezed like he hadn't seen her in a million years. Maybe it had been a million years, Kaelyn had no idea what they would be returning to. Then, she remembered Dr. Strange's words. Five years. "Peter? What's the matter?"
Peter sighed, not letting go, "Last time I held you, you turned to dust in my arms. I'm not letting go this time."
The portals opened wide and Kaelyn saw into pure destruction. She did not know where Dr. Strange had taken them, but it looked like hell on earth. She saw Captain America stand alone facing an army of hundreds of thousands. Peter grabbed Kaelyn's waist and they swung through the portal, Peter removing his mask to oggle the scene in front of them. Despite the situation at hand, Peter smiled.
"We did it, Kae," was all he said, speaking breathlessly with hope in his voice.
As she readied her jet propulsors and any weapons she knew how to fight with, she shook her head, a half-smile teasing at her expression, "Not yet, baby."
She watched in awe as the armies of Wakanda stepped through their portal, chanting the fight songs of their people. Star-Lord and the Guardians stood beside her, gearing up for the endless battle in front of them. A woman who glowed like the sun crashed into the desolate ground, creating a crater in her wake. A man with a metal mask, a leather coat, and what could only be described as a big-ass gun stood beside the man Kaelyn knew as Sam Wilson. Ships flew through portals high in the air, armies rallying behind a hopeful looking Captain America as they faced Thanos's army. A woman in a suit of armor on a flying horse settled with the armies of what Kaelyn could only imagine was the great army of Asgard, she had heard so many stories about whenever she caught Thor at the Avengers compound. Hundreds of people displaying the same gold ember formations of Dr. Strange stood in a small army of their own and Kaelyn was in nothing short of awe. An army like this was from her wildest dreams and her being apart of it was unimaginable. For the first time in a long time, she had hope.
"Is that everyone?" Dr. Strange asked, speaking to the people who must be helping him create the insane amount of portals used to bring everyone to this battlefield.
A stout Asian man looked at him with an exasperated expression, "What? You wanted more?"
After this statement, a giant man crashed through a fallen building, releasing even more superheroes from his fist. Kaelyn didn't think she had ever seen this many soldiers in her life. It was glorious in every way imaginable, biblical in the diverse form of those who believed in one common goal: The Avengers. Midtown's cheer team could go fuck itself, Kaelyn liked this team so, so much more. Kaelyn could hardly see it from a distance, but she would pay to see the expression on Thanos's face at this moment.
"Avengers..." Captain America screamed at the top of his lungs. Everyone waited with bated breath. "...Assemble."
Until this moment, Kaelyn had never felt like a hero. She was a mess, she was the definition of a bratty teenage girl. She nearly failed algebra last year, tripped herself up over a boy, discovered she had superpowers, fallen in love, trained like her life depended on it, but now... Now was different. She had a cause, she had an army at her side, the love of her life at her side, and an enemy in front of her. She wanted to spit the blood Thanos spilled back into his face and make him kiss her boot and she was hellbent on doing everything and anything she could to take him down. Being fundamentally invincible was quite the perk right now. As Captain America had spoken the words to ignite the fire inside of all of them, they screamed until their throats were raw as the sprinted into battle. Kaelyn lost sight of Peter as he swung away, but all she had her eye on was the ball at this moment. The first of Thanos's soldiers she came into contact with, she was able to take down easily. Even as they trampled on top of her, none of them came close to hurting her.
A soldier launched at her, slashing away at her armor as she fought to get it off of her, but as her armor broke under the pressure of the weapon, her skin stayed unbroken. She laughed as she released a vibranium spear that rested along her forearm and protruded past her wrist from her suit and stabbed the soldier through the chest. Bracing herself against the onslaught of attackers, she slashed away until she caught a moment to catch her breath. Not a moment too soon was she alert again as more and more came crashing her way.
For a moment, too many soldiers converged on her and she crashed to the ground, struggling to get through them and back on her feet. An arm reached down and grabbed her, yanking her up and out of the pile. Into the air, she landed on the back of a horse, pegasus really, as a dark-skinned woman with a giant sword slashed towards the pile of soldiers Kaelyn had been under a moment ago.
"Thank you," she spoke breathlessly through her mask, holding onto the woman for dear life as they soared. "I'm Kaelyn."
"Valkyrie," the woman introduced, "Brunnhilde if you prefer, I'm gonna drop you and hold onto you, you take these guys out, sound good?"
The girl nodded as Valkyrie held onto Kaelyn's wrist with a death grip as she dropped down and took out a few straggling soldiers before they rose into the air again. The pegasus landed next to where the glowing woman was shooting what looked to be some sort of electromagnetic pulse throughout Thanos's solders. For a moment, Valkyrie hesitated as she let Kaelyn off the horse.
She did not take flight right away as Kaelyn expected her to, instead she paused and spoke to the glowing woman, "Aurora, you look... good."
The woman stopped, a glowing forcefield surrounding them which allowed them a moment to speak as she looked at Valkyrie with a feeling in her eyes Kaelyn did not recognize, "Brunnhilde... time has been kind to you."
Without another word, Valkyrie took flight once again and the forcefield conceded. Looking over at Kaelyn, the glowing woman seemed to feel her confusion radiating as she explained, "It's complicated."
Kaelyn simply nodded before she began searching for Peter, fighting off soldiers as she did so. Finally, in a field of darkness, she spotted the red and blue suit, sighing with relief as she saw him speaking to Tony. She watched with a smile as the older man pulled Tony into a hug. When they pulled away, Tony's eyes met Kaelyn's. Without a word, her mask removed itself and she ran over to him as fast as she could. He hugged her and something between them was understood. In a brief amount of time, Tony had become more of a father to her than Caden or her zombie-dad had ever been. She knew that although she had only seen Tony minutes ago, it had been five years for him. Five years, her heart feared for Beth and her brother. Who would they be when she returned? Would she ever return?
They all pulled away from each other, but Tony clamped a hand onto both of the teenagers' shoulders, "It's good to see you kids."
Kaelyn's heart warmed; the battle raged on.
Next chapter is gonna be... WOW good luck guys I can't wait for this
