04 - BEAMED UP

GOING TO A SCIENCE-BASED SCHOOL SUCH AS MIDTOWN meant a handful of field trips to every museum imaginable. It had been a long day of tours and now Kaelyn, Ned, Beth, and Peter were all practically falling asleep on the bus. Kaelyn had her head gently resting on Peter's shoulder while her eyes fluttered closed from time to time. Beth was sitting one seat up sharing headphones with Ned. It was quiet, calm for the first time in so long. Kaelyn felt safe with Peter's arm around her, one resting across the top of the seat in front of him. However, Kaelyn was never lucky enough to feel safe for long. Every hair on Peter's arm stood on end in a flash, causing both her and Peter to increase their alertness. After a year together, you learned what spidey sense looked like and this was a perfect example of it.

Looking out the window to the right, Peter got tense, but Kaelyn couldn't see past him. Tapping him on the shoulder she asked with worry coating her tone, "What's going on, baby?"

Peter looked from the window to Kaelyn and back to the window. There was fear in his voice when he spoke, she could hear it even as he tried to hide it. "Get ready to suit up. Look."

He moved out of the way and Kaelyn saw what looked like a giant, metal, flying doughnut. Of course, she couldn't get one day where nothing went wrong. Looking at Peter she nodded and got ready to move. Peter reached up and tapped Ned, saying, "Ned, hey. I need you to cause a distraction."

"Holy shit," Ned said as soon as he took out his earbud and looked out the window.

Beth noticed the object too, her eyes glued to the window as she said, "What the fuck is that?"

Creating the perfect distraction, Ned shouted, "We're all gonna die!" As one would in a situation like this. With this being said, everyone flocked to the ride side of the bus so quickly it almost seemed like it was going to flip. As soon as everyone was looking at the object, Peter used his web-slinger to open the emergency exit beside them and grab Kaelyn. On the side of the bus, they slipped on their masks before Kaelyn grabbed onto his back and they leaped off the bridge with Peter's web-slinger keeping them from free-falling into the water. They landed just across from a park, letting the nanotech in their suits coat them and prepare them for battle. Just as a ginormous creature Kaelyn could only assume was an alien was about to punch Tony Stark into next week, Peter leaped in front and stopped in. That's my boy, Kaelyn thought to herself before launching into battle.

"Hey, man! What's up, Mr. Stark?" Kaelyn heard Peter say, humorous as always in the worst circumstances.

"Kids! Where'd you come from?" Tony questioned while Peter held back the monster.

"Field trip to the MoMA!" Peter explained just as the creature grabbed him and tossed him. "Uh, what is this guy's problem, Mr. Stark?"

The monster was thrown aback by Peter and Tony's attacks so with all her might Kaelyn leaped and grabbed it from the neck, clinging onto his back.

"Uh, he's from space. Came here to steal a necklace from a wizard," was the only explanation Mr. Stark offered them while they collectively tried to take down the beast.

Kaelyn headbutted him, knocking him off guard just as Peter got thrown somewhere she couldn't see. Speaking into her suit, she said, "Meredith, wrist blade." Yes, in the past year Tony had given her a suit with her own personalized A.I. She specifically requested to name it Meredith simply because she could. A sharpened blade similar to the jaws of a shark rose from the forearm of her suit, just barely breaking through the alien's rough exterior and making him bleed just barely. Disappointed, she dragged her arm swiftly across the throat, hoping to do more damage. Instead, she simply angered the beast and it grabbed her by the back and launched her directly into the ground. The most damage it did was knock the wind out of her and she was able to recover quickly. However, she was knocked off the monster now a moment too soon because Peter had grabbed a taxi with his web-slinger and brought it on top of the alien, crashing everyone into the ground.

Something went whizzing by in the air and Tony looked at Peter instructing, "Kid, that's the wizard. Get on it! Kaelyn, stay here and help me take this guy down."

"On it!" Peter exclaimed at the same time Kaelyn released an enthusiastic, "Yes, sir!"

The alien tried to smack her with its weird hammer contraption, but she caught it and was able to redirect it causing it to his the alien in the chest.

"Uh, Mr. Stark, I'm being beamed up," Kaelyn heard into the intercoms.

Tony followed with a brief, "Hold on, kid." Just as he got grabbed and restrained by the alien. Kaelyn tried to help but he shook his head, "Go get Peter, now! I'll be right behind you."

Hesitantly, Kaelyn looked from Mr. Stark to the direction Peter had gone off in. She leaped off into that direction, turning back to see some sort of portal open causing the monster who was about to pounce on Tony to completely disappear. Figuring this must have to do with the so-called wizard he mentioned, she saw that he was safe and continued on. As a blue light reached the asphalt from the flying doughnut, she understood what Peter had meant by "beamed up."

"Here goes nothing," she mumbled to herself before leaping into the light, feeling herself rising with each passing moment. Just as she was about to reach the spacecraft, the blue light vanished and she felt the air around her as she fell. However, something caught her. Pulling her up to the craft, she saw Peter clinging onto the side, one arm shooting the web that was holding onto Kaelyn.

As she reached him and grabbed onto the side, Peter sounded strained and out of breath, "I don't feel like finding out if you can die today. How are you? Are you okay?"

"I'm okay, are you?" Kaelyn nodded, looking at her boyfriend through the suit. Although they were in the middle of a mission, she held out her pinky, "Pinky promise we'll make it out of this?"

Peter intertwined his finger with hers, "Pinky promise. I love you, I'm glad you're okay."

"I love you, too. What do we do now?"

Just as she asked that they heard Tony's voice in their suits, "Pete, Kae, you guys gotta let go, I'm gonna catch you."

"But you said save the wizard!" Peter argued back as they climbed up the side of the spaceship as it rose in altitude. Peter pulled off his mask, gasping, "I can't breathe."

Kaelyn felt the same struggle, pulling off her mask as well as strands of her hair swung violently with the air pressure.

"We're too high up, you're running out of air," Tony spoke, his tone getting more and more worried. Kaelyn wasn't going to give up now and she knew Peter wasn't going to either."

"Yeah, that makes sense," Peter muttered, both him and Kaelyn sharing worried looks and labored breathing. Just as he said this, he lost grip.

"Peter!" Kaelyn screamed, watching his free fall. A tear slipped down her cheek, but she wiped it away. Something caught him, it must have been what Tony was talking about.

Sensing her worry, Tony spoke into the coms, "Hang tight, Kae, I've got one for you, too."

Just as he said this, something attached itself to her back and rebuilt her suit. It was nanotech creating a breathable shell for her suit. She gasped, taking in as much oxygen as she could. Looking down, her eyes landed on Peter who had hit the bottom part and gotten a grip as he had his own iron suit as well.

"Mr. Stark, it smells like a new car in here!" Peter exclaimed, causing Kaelyn to giggle and tear up with relief. She did not need Peter dying on her, not now, not ever. Especially not after he pinky promised.

"Happy trails, kids," was all Tony said before instructing, "Friday, send them home."

Kaelyn felt something protrude from her back, yanking her off of the side of the space ship. Groaning, she fought to regain her composure. Just as she was about to get dragged by a parachute back to New York, Peter grabbed onto his flailing arm and deployed her parachute, allowing them both to get a good grip on the other side of the ship.

Just as the doors began to close on them, Peter looked at Kaelyn and groaned, "I shoulda stayed on the bus."

Scoffing, she simply said, "Yeah, you're telling me."
