01 - STRANGERS
"BETH, TALK TO ME," Kaelyn spoke into the intercom in her suit as she surveyed the city beneath her. She was on the taller building while Peter waited on the rooftop across from her. The wind whistled in her ears as the sound of cars driving and the ambient city was drowned out beneath her. All she had was the wind and her best friend's voice in her ear.
"Five hostages. Armed, but the surveillance footage Ned hacked shows it's just handguns, nothing fancy. Best bet is to go in through the ceiling. Have Peter web you in and he'll follow you," the girl instructed in her ear and Kaelyn could hear the clacking of keys as she assumed the girl was doing her best to get into the bank systems to secure it while Ned got through to the cameras. This wasn't their first rodeo and Kaelyn knew it would be far from their last.
Gracefully as ever, Kaelyn leaped onto the roof of the bank across the street, catapulting into a roll to stabilize herself and not murdering her ankles before sticking the landing. Turns out, cheerleading was a valuable skill in life. Slinking her way over to one of the bank's windowpane's on the roof, Peter joins her just as she begins to remove it.
"If you fall and ruin this badass entrance that I'm helping you with, I'm going to be so mad," Peter attempts to sound serious, but Kaelyn already knows that under his suit he's smiling. Giggling, she pushes him slightly as he shoots out a web and ties it around her. Just before she hops through the open area, Peter holds out his pinky. Smiling under the suit, she wraps her pinky around his before letting go and dropping into the bank.
"I've got eyes on the hostages," Kaelyn speaks quietly into the intercom, "Robbers are distracted, don't see me. How long until police arrive on the scene?"
"GPS says two minutes. Keep them distracted while Peter gets the hostages out," was Beth's response.
Kaelyn's favorite thing to do was take out pesky robbers like these six guys attempting to steal from the bank's vault. She landed on the tiled floor and wolf-whistled to get the robbers' attention.
One of them, she presumed the leader, looked at her and aimed his gun to line up with her face, "Who the hell are you?"
"You know I think you're really missing the point of the suit, buddy!" Kaelyn exclaimed, she put her hands up in a false surrender, trying to appear genuine, "Don't get too excited, just let me get these hostages out and no one has to get hurt."
"I don't want to have to shoot you," the leader speaks sternly, cocking his gun.
"Oh, I wasn't talking about me," Kaelyn laughed heartily which thoroughly confused the robbers. Before they could even question her, she shot herself at the guy nearest to her, being able to wrap her legs around his neck and take him down all while grabbing his weapon. Then, with him unconscious, his gun was aimed at the second nearest guy. "All right, who's next? Let's see! Eenie," she points at one, then the other, as she speaks, "Meanie, minie, mo." Finally, the gun points at the leader. His response, of course, is to shoot. Naturally, the bullet bounces.
The leader looks from her, to his gun, and back to Kaelyn, "What the-"
He would have finished his sentence, but you see, Kaelyn had already shot him in the foot before disarming him. The other four remaining are already shooting at her, to no avail, of course, while she is able to unload his gun and toss it to the side before launching at the men shooting. While she is in the process of trying to take one of the men down, another one lands on top of her and tries to yank her back by the suit, almost pulling off her mask. As she tries to fight back, her mask comes off, her bright red hair cascading off. She shoves the man off of her while simultaneously knocking out the man she had been attacking. Leaping off of him, she lands in a total superhero pose which she definitely did not do to show off in front of her boyfriend. Definitely not at all.
Huffing strands of hair out of her eyes, she glares at the man who took her mask who also happened to be the last remaining one left. Thankfully, Peter had gotten the hostages out and was now acting as Kaelyn's backup, meaning they were the only ones who saw her without the mask.
"You just messed with the wrong bitch," she spits, her expression scathing as the man frantically shoots at her before running out of ammo. Frantically, he tosses his gun and holds up his fists. She raises an eyebrow as if to say, Seriously? Before landing a kick to his skull and knocking him out cold. Quickly, just as police sirens begin to become deafening, she tucks all her hair back in and puts her mask on.
"Good one, let's hope he's bad at remembering faces," Peter scoffs with a small laugh as they push all the robbers together and he webs them up nice and tight for when law enforcement arrives. Once that's finished, Peter wraps an arm around Kaelyn's waist and shoots his web up into the same place where they came in. Carefully, they move the windowpane back into place and shoot off onto the building Kaelyn had originally been on.
Once they landed on the rooftop, the two tumble so they're laying on the rubbled roof of the building. Peter leaves his arm around her waist as the two remove their masks. Before any words are said, Kaelyn leans over and kisses Peter softly like she does every time they finish a mission.
"I'm so bitter about him taking off my mask, I'm pretty sure he yanked out some of my hair. So rude," Kaelyn scoffed as they lay on the roof, just catching their breath for a moment, "Also thanks for the help, jackass."
"Oh, I knew you had it handled," Peter laughed, giving her a kiss on the cheek while she reached up and began to play with his hair. It was much longer now than it had been when they met, but she liked how fluffy it had gotten. "Happy anniversary, sorry we had to stop some bank robbers."
"One year, baby," Kaelyn giggled, kissing Peter again, "Please, you know there's nothing else I'd rather be doing with you. Besides, I'm sure we can still catch our reservation."
"Yeah, if we weren't halfway across the city from it and we didn't have to change. No offense, Kae, but we are not gonna celebrate this in our spidey suits," Peter laughed, hugging the girl tighter, "How about we go back to yours and I'll cook for us?"
Kaelyn giggled as she stood up and held out a hand to Peter. "You? Cooking? I have to laugh. Come on, let's go home, I'm sure my mom has something good on its way to the table."
"So, things are pretty much back to normal with everything at home?" the boy questioned as they put their masks on in preparation for traveling home.
She sighed deeply, "Not even close. I feel like I'm living with two strangers, I mean, I must have been, what, nine? Last time I saw them and last time I heard from them it was the cops telling me they'd been murdered. I mean, obviously, I know they're my parents I have the same face as my mom pretty much, but something just doesn't feel right."
"Still haven't told you how you got your powers?"
"Nope, every time I ask my mom acts like she's got a lock and key on her lips and it's driving me insane because I know she knows and I just, I can't help feeling like they had something to do with it." Peter grabbed her hand gently as she spoke, pulling her into a hug. "I'm glad they're not dead, I really am, but I'm not too sure I'm okay with the big happy family act. I mean, did we really need a new apartment? I don't think so."
"I mean the new place is kind of nice-" Peter tries to say but she just shakes her head and he drifts off. "You know what? Why don't we just take a day off from superhero stuff, okay? Tomorrow, any crime is the police's job. We've got our field trip coming up, too! It's gonna be awesome! Just me and you against the normal world. How's that sound?"
Kaelyn scoffed, "Sounds impossible."
"Well, it's gonna be awesome!"
