MELODY OPENED HER eyes in what felt like forever. She blinked several times, realizing that she no longer laid on the hard surface of the truck. There were sheets underneath her. A bed. The fairytale woman sat up, looking side to side at the bedroom she was in. There was no familiarity to it which made her nose scrunch up in confusion. Her fingers cracked as fire began to ignite in between each one. She stood up and went over to the window. There was a line of buildings that gave nothing away as to where she was.
Klaus walked in at that instant and smirked. "Oh good, you're up." She spun to him. "I was beginning to get rather bored."
She scoffed, crossing her arms over her chest. "Where the hell are we?" He crossed over to the drawer and got out a charm. Melody quickly snatched it from him, realizing it to be the one that Killian gave to her. "You had no right taking that from me."
He ignored the last part and answered her first question. "We are in Portland. You said you wanted to see the world. Consider me this showing you a bit of what the world has to offer. Stefan is in Mystic Falls, doesn't have his humanity, but he's fine. Rebekah is as well. I found a way to make my hybrids which is Elena's blood. I'm here to make some hybrids."
Melody relaxed a bit, not breaking eye contact with him. Stefan lost his humanity and was still Klaus's puppet. The thought made her blood boil, but not as much as she thought it would. "I'm not that mad at you for throwing me in the back of that truck you know." He seemed genuinely surprised but covered it up. She saw it anyway. "I get why you did it. You didn't want to admit that what I said before got to you. You don't want to admit that you have a soft spot for me."
"Oh so you yelling at me was nothing then?"
She shrugged. "Spur if the moment." He looked as if he might smile but held it back. "Fine, say you don't have a soft spot for me." Melody took a step toward him with a smirk. "Then why bring me on this trip with you and not leave me in Mystic Falls?"
The question caught him off-guard. Klaus hadn't thought about that. He looked at her, taking a step to brush away a piece of her hair. "Do you really think I'd leave my one true love—" Melody rolled her eyes, knowing he was being dramatic. "—behind when I could have her right by my side?"
She shook her head. In a swift movement, Melody grabbed his arm and broke it with her magic. Klaus groaned, falling to the ground. He hissed, "What was that for?"
Melody flicked her wrist to pin him against the wall. She stepped toward him. "I take what I said back. That is for throwing me in the back of the truck." Her eyes narrowed. "I'm not going to keep playing games with you, Klaus. Because frankly, I'm sitting here and trying to get you to at least trust me a little bit. And maybe, just maybe I'll trust you too. Take a leap of faith for once."
The female released him, turning her back to walk to the window. Klaus rubbed his arm that healed. He frowned but tried to act like her words didn't affect him. "You must be hungry. How about I take you to lunch?"
She laughed humorlessly, turning to him. "Are you seriously asking me on a date?"
He smiled a tad. "Take a leap of faith for once, love."
———
A waiter approached them at the table. Melody sat, still staring at her menu and trying to ignore the fact that Klaus was staring at her. He had concealed his emotions this time. Klaus was trying to decipher the adult-female in front of him. Whether he liked it or not, she intrigued him as did her yet-to-be-discovered past.
"What could I get for you guys?"
Melody looked up, smiling politely. "I'll take chicken parmesan with a glass of water please." He blushed, writing it down. Getting a sense of déjà vu, she laughed quietly. Klaus glared at the boy. "What do you what, Klaus?"
He didn't look at her to even acknowledge her teasing smirk. "I'll have the same thing my girlfriend is having."
The boy realized his mistake and hurried away. Melody still smirked. "So you don't have a soft spot for me?"
Klaus looked back at her with clenched teeth. "Shut up. I knew I should've just left you in Mystic Falls."
That hurt. Melody internally winced but continued her teasing. "Then what's stopping you from taking me back?"
It seemed as though he didn't have an answer for that and if he did, he didn't share it. Klaus put on a smile, setting his clasped hands on the table in front of him. "So Melody, tell me about yourself. You know, your family and the like."
She made a face. "I'll make you a deal. I'll tell you about my family if you tell me about yours." He clearly looked like he was debating her offer. Deep down the past left scars for both of them. So telling the other of the past would mean they'd have to relive those memories. And neither wanted to revisit a selected few.
Klaus nodded. "Deal. You go first."
Melody fixed her shirt, tugging it down before sighing. "Okay, um. It's extremely complicated but I'll try my best." He took note that she began to tap her fingers against the table. Was she nervous? "I grew up with my dad who later became Peter Pan and my brother, Rumplestiltskin. My mom died a few years back which is what my dad told me. Through the years my dad and I were close. He always put me first before my brother and I didn't know why until a few years ago—" He reached out to grab her tapping hand, making her blush. "Sorry, it just isn't..."
"Easy?" he guessed. She nodded, removing her hand from his and lying it in her lap. Klaus withdrew his hand to clasp it with his other. "You know, forget it. You don't have to tell me all the details. Just tell me the good things."
Her face could only be described as surprise but also a bit of gratefulness. "Okay. Well, I live back in a town called StoryBrooke. I'm not telling you where it is because you never know who's listening. But anyway, my family and I built this huge house for all of us to live in. My mom, Regina who is the Evil Queen is married to Robin Hood and has a son named Roland. My dad, Peter Pan is married to his second-in-command of the lost boys, Felix and they have a son named Alec."
While she detailed everyone in her family, their partners, and children, Klaus listened intently, soaking in every word. He never once cut her off or ignored her. Even though he hated — no despised — to say it out loud, Melody was different. And he had yet to decide if it was a good different. In the midst of all of him making hybrids and practically destroying everything in sight, this woman, this fairytale woman stood by him no matter what he did. The thing that struck odd was that even though he was beginning to form a soft spot for her, he still wanted to create hybrids. Meeting her hadn't changed that.
At least two hours past before they finally stopped talking. Klaus had already told her about his past, her finally telling him what her curse was and how it broke. The only thing she refused to tell him was about the years before she was reunited with her father. But he already knew that they were full of pain from just looking at her.
Klaus laughed, putting a finger to his lips. "I have got to say that you surprised me, love."
She smiled, tilting her head to the side slightly. "Why do you say that?"
"Because I threw you in the back of a truck and you still continue to talk with me like nothing ever happened."
Melody shrugged, taking a sip of her water. She tugged on her shirt. "What can I say, spending too much time with Belle has made me forgive people no matter what."
That made him stop, staring at her once more. In his entire existence, the only people who continued to forgive him were Elijah and Rebekah. Now Melody was doing the same and she hardly knew him. But how she said that living with heroes made her like that made sense, just unbelievable because no one was ever like that with him.
"You know," Melody started. "If you weren't so much of an ass, I would probably date you. But I've never had a boyfriend so."
Klaus looked shocked. "You've never dated anyone? Ever?"
People chatted around them, oblivious to the fact that a fairytale character and an immortal hybrid were in their midst. The boy from earlier was long gone, scared off by Klaus no doubt. Every time he was in sight, the said hybrid would glare fiercely; Melody noticed each time. The sun had dwindled to a simple ray in the sky, night appearing overhead.
"Nope. Any time a guy would come near me, my family would run him off into the sunset. The sun would burn him and suddenly on the news you have a report saying they found the dead body of that guy."
"Are you being serious or joking? I can't tell."
Melody leaned closer to him. "I guess you'll never know."
He smiled, chuckling. "I'll ask you in a few years then." Their smiles vanished and an awkward tension filled the air. A waiter walked by and Klaus called out to them. "Get us the check."
———
The day ended with them going back to the hotel and Melody never once seeing Klaus until the next day when he announced that they were going back to Mystic Falls. His father, the one who tormented him for a thousand years was alive — sort of — but daggered and waiting. A bad feeling was in her stomach the entire time and she itched to tell him. Klaus never spoke a word to her.
It would because of what he said last night during their "date". Even if he denied it, Melody knew that's what it was. Klaus had never met someone like her before. After all, they were destined to be together which put a huge amount of pressure on both of their shoulders. This was why he was nice to her and then pushed her away. As soon as they got close, he got afraid and backed away.
Melody could bury the feeling no longer and searched for Klaus when the Homecoming party began. She found him exiting the stage and quickly went over to him. "Klaus!" He ignored her. "Klaus!" She grabbed his arm, making him stop. "Look, I get what happened last night you don't want to talk about. But listen to me, something is up. There's no way you're going to get Mikael delivered to your doorstep without a catch."
He looked at her emotionlessly. "I'm fully aware. Now go and enjoy the party. Our little road trip and time together is over."
Klaus left her there gaping. Melody felt the tears and pushed them away, drawing in a deep breath. As soon as she turned her back, Mikael was there. Before the brunette could react — due to her not knowing who he was — he covered her mouth and flashed her away. The female struggled but since he was stronger than her, there wasn't much she could do. Melody was thrown to a compelled hybrid, watching as Mikael stood in the doorway.
A voice she heard only moments ago rang in her ears. "Hello, Mikael. Why don't you come in? Oh, that's right. I forgot you can't."
The hybrid sounded smug, which meant that he didn't know that she was there. Unbeknownst to her, however, Klaus could hear her heartbeat and smell her scent, which he had gotten used to, nearby yet didn't make any movements to show he did. But he didn't know that she was right outside.
"Or you can come outside if you want," Mikael offered.
Melody cocked her head to the side to see a familiar brunette. Elena. No. Katherine. It wasn't hard to see the difference. Though it was clear that the vampire was posing as her doppelganger, it didn't change the fact that Mikael didn't know.
"Or I could watch my hybrids tear you limb from limb," Klaus smirked, seeing his hybrids surround Mikael.
His father simply smirked right back. "They can't kill me."
Klaus was still acting cocky, testing the waters though he didn't care about them. "True. But it'll make a hell of a party game. All I have to do is rub these two fingers together and they'll pounce."
Melody tried to fight against the hybrid who still had her mouth covered. She couldn't yell for Klaus with the man digging his hands into her skin. The fairytale woman hardly even had room to breathe.
"The big bad wolf," Mikael taunted. "You haven't changed. Still hiding behind your playthings like a coward. You only forget. They may be sired by you, but they're still part vampire. And they can be compelled by me."
One hybrid, Mindy, pushed "Elena" in view of Klaus. Melody couldn't see it, but Klaus remained unaffected. He wasn't at all fazed to see the girl who carried the blood to make his hybrids. "Come out and face me, Niklaus. Or she dies."
"Go ahead. Kill her."
Mikael chuckled. "Oh I know she might matter to you. But her—" the hybrid pushed Melody into Mikael's arms. Klaus couldn't hide his shock and worry. "This girl you care about deeply. You try to hide your feelings. Silly boy. Love is weak. No one will stay at your side. This girl most certainly won't. Nobody cares about you anymore, boy! What do you have other than those whose loyalty you forced? No one. No one. Not even this girl. She will only see the monster."
Klaus began to tear up and Melody tried to fight back. At that moment she realized that no matter who he was, Klaus was worth fighting for. Her hero part was showing. And in the time they grew to know each other, the hybrid had climbed his way into her head and refused to leave.
"I'm calling your bluff, father. Kill her," Klaus spoke.
Melody looked straight at him. She could see his fight internally. He didn't know whether he should let her go or fight to keep her alive, safe. For years no one was ever there for him like she was. No one knew his pain. Only the female being held by his father did.
"Come outside and face me, you little coward. And I won't have to," Mikael replied.
The brunette continued to stare at Klaus. He looked at her as he said, "My whole life you've underestimated me." He looked at Mikael. "If you kill her you lose your leverage. So go ahead. Go on. Kill her. Come on, old man. Kill her. Kill her!!!"
Mikael only chuckled. "Your impulse, Niklaus. It has and will forever be the one thing that keeps you from truly being great."
That's when the dagger went into her back. Klaus yelled in worry, going to flash to her rescue when Damon rushed up behind him. Right before the white oak stake went through Klaus's heart, Stefan appeared and knocked it out of Damon's hand. Klaus went to grab it but Melody was faster, the wound from the dagger healed from her magic and she used all of the anger she felt towards Mikael to make the stake appear in her hands.
And she drove it through Mikael's chest, hitting his heart directly. Melody held the man, not letting go of the stake. "You try to hurt Klaus, you go through me first." She twisted the stake. "He is not a monster, he's a man. And that is more than you have ever been."
With a swift kick, she knocked him to the ground and Mikael instantly burst into flames. Melody turned to see Klaus, Damon, and Stefan, all three of them staring in utter disbelief. Stefan, having gained his freedom, flashed off with Damon close behind. Klaus walked out of the house and towards her.
"You... killed him."
She nodded, shifting onto her other foot. "Yeah. Now there's nothing in your way to making your hybrids. You don't have to thank me. Goodnight, Klaus."
He flashed in front of her while Melody was walking away. "No, you can't just walk away like that. No one would've..." She raised an eyebrow. "Why?"
Melody put her hands on his cheeks. "I told you before. You are a man, not a monster. Us being destined to be with each other might have its perks. We come from a past of pain and the two of us both have felt the same pain. You may not think you're capable of love or that love is weak. But it isn't. It's strength. And it gives you a reason to fight every single day or your life. So when you get the chance. Take it."
Klaus put his hands on hers that were still on his cheeks. Tears pooled in his eyes from what she and his father had said. "I know that I'm not the best person. But I'm only saying this once, so don't make me repeat it." She waited. "Thank you. For everything. And now that my father is dead, I can reunite my family. I want you to be there."
Their hands dropped to their sides. Both of them frowned internally but didn't move to intertwine their hands again. Melody looked surprised yet happy. "Really?"
He smiled. "Yes. It seems as though you are the only comrade and loyal follower I have. The hybrids don't count."
She smiled back teasingly. "I'm not a loyal follower or comrade, Klaus." His smile fell. "I'm your friend." The smile returned. "And your friend would like to go on another date sometime."
Klaus locked his arms with hers and led her back to the house. "That can be arranged."
———
Melody and Klaus were making their way to the truck containing the coffins, talking with smiles. After the events of Mikael's death, Klaus and Melody stayed at the Lockwood mansion, bidding each other goodnight but not being able to sleep due to one thinking about the other and vice verse. They had breakfast and made their journey to the truck right after. Klaus had planned for them to have lunch together later.
Pan had called that morning, Melody telling him of the events. Her dad was furious to hear that she was getting all "cuddly" with the "enemy". And he wasn't happy when Mary Margaret cheered her on. The former bandit had gushed over how Melody was changing Klaus to which the brunette replied saying that she wasn't changing him, just showing him the good inside of him and making him see that he wasn't alone.
Klaus's phone rang, breaking up their conversation. He answered it with a smile. "Stefan! Miss me already?"
Melody remembered the spell she had taught herself on the road trip and used that to eavesdrop on the conversation.
"I'm just calling to thank you for my freedom," Stefan responded.
A bad feeling erupted in her stomach. She glanced around, trying not to worry Klaus. He didn't notice.
"Oh, I like to believe I'm a man of my word, more or less," Klaus told him, not even bothering to notice the smugness in the younger vampire's voice.
Stefan shook his head but it wasn't audible to them. "Thing is, it came at too high of a price. You took everything from me, Klaus."
If the hybrid had been paying attention, he would've realized that something was up. He didn't. Melody continuously glanced around them. She couldn't quite pinpoint what was wrong. But something definitely was. Her gut was hardly ever wrong.
"Let bygones be bygones, trust me. Resentment get's old," Klaus waved.
The truck was then in sight. Her eyes widened when she found out what her gut was telling her. Melody ran to the truck, drawing Klaus's attention. He looked concerned, following as quickly as he could. That's when Stefan said, "You know what never get's old? Revenge."
Melody grabbed the handle of the back of the truck, pulling it up to reveal an empty back. The coffins were gone. She gasped. Klaus growled into the phone. "No."
Stefan was practically smirking on the other line. "What's the matter, Klaus? Missing something?"
The brunette spun, speaking up because she knew Stefan could hear her. "What the hell are you doing, Stefan?"
"Just enjoying my freedom. Thanks for the help, Melody."
She gritted her teeth. Klaus put a hand on her shoulder to calm her. Melody shrugged him off. He didn't bother to even give her a look. "I will kill you and everyone you've ever met!"
"Well that would include Melody now, wouldn't it? And you have a soft spot for her so good luck with that. But if you do kill everyone I know, you will never see your family again. I wonder Klaus, as someone who has been one step ahead for a thousand years...are you prepared for this?"
The vampire hung up. Klaus pocketed his phone and turned to her. "Is there any way you can track them, find out where he's hidden them?"
She shook her head. "None. He left nothing behind. But trust me, we will get those coffins back. Because last I checked, your mother made my curse. And your mother was a witch. Now how would they feel if I threatened to end my life, breaking the prophecy?"
He got what she was saying. "Nature would be unbalanced."
Melody smirked, as did he. "And you know how witches oh so hate to have nature unbalanced."
One thing was for sure. There was no going back to how Melody was before. Because now she was an ally to Klaus Mikaelson. She was his friend and true love (though they hadn't done anything romantic yet besides going on dates or holding hands). And if you messed with one of them, you messed with them both.
———
I know, I know. They are already friends. But, in my mind, if you take note of their past, Melody's want for love, and how she literally grew up with people who found their true loves and forgave people (second chances and stuff), it just didn't seem likely for her to hate him. Because that just isn't Melody at all. Again, they won't get together right away. It is slow progress. However, they are bound to have another fight.
What do you think about Melody killing Mikael?
I hope you guys have a great day/night and don't forget to vote on this chapter, comment your thoughts, and follow me for updates!
