HER BAD FEELING radar was officially out of whack. Whenever she was around Klaus, Melody couldn't for the life of her find out what was wrong about the situation they were in. But when she was drinking some coffee in the kitchen, alone, Rebekah had come in just a minute prior to give her the last white oak stake. The smile didn't reach her eyes, and the words weren't spoken in the way that the female Original would say them. And from the vibe she got, her friend was either upset with her or there was something wrong with her that would change her personality. Esther was dead so could that be it? No idea that popped into her head made sense.
The brunette's eyes followed as Rebekah left the room with one last forced smile. She studied the stake, spinning it. Her fingers danced on the markings and she felt magic reflecting off of it which seemed reasonable. And yet her bad feeling was still prominent. So she set down her mug, going into the living room.
Klaus was working on an abstract painting on his easel, the fire burning, illuminating the room. She went over to him, her steps causing his strokes to stop and his body to turn to her. "What took her so long?" he questioned.
"Apparently Alaric gave her problems," she replied, her tone displaying that she didn't believe the words.
He caught on and raised an eyebrow. "You don't sound convinced, love."
"That's because I'm not." The hybrid set down his paintbrush, so his attention was fully on her as she continued on. "Something isn't with Rebekah. She's not acting like herself and I have a bad feeling whenever she's around. My bad feeling radar hasn't been working lately and I blame you."
She tossed him the stake which he caught with ease. Then she crossed her arms over her chest. Klaus smirked a bit at her words. "Oh. Are you saying that I'm distracting you?"
"Maybe just a little bit," Melody answered, making a face. "And your sister requested that we stay for one last hoorah: the decade dance she planned." He went to argue and she held a finger up. "Before you say anything else. I personally think we should go because I have a feeling that something will happen. Plus, It's twenties-themed and I spent three hours finding a dress." He rolled his eyes playfully. "My hard work is not going to waste."
The Original nodded, fighting off the smile with little effort. "Alright, one last hoorah." He turned his back a bit to toss the stake in the fire. "You sure I'm not just distracting you again so you think something is happening when it's not?"
Melody narrowed her eyes at him. "Positive. When have I been wrong." Once again he went to say something but she held up her finger again. "Don't answer that." She stepped toward him. "Well, I have to go and find myself some shoes so I'll see you later?" She pecked his lips before giving him a smile and then disappearing in a cloud of purple smoke.
He shook his head in wonder, looking back at his canvas. The artwork was almost done but he was no longer feeling any inspiration for it. Instead, he grabbed his sketchbook and a pencil, walking out of the mansion to find somewhere quiet to begin his sketch. Even though he had drawn his girlfriend before they were even a thing, that didn't stop him from adding to the collection. Because every single time, he would scold himself for not making it accurate enough. Melody's beauty just couldn't be captured.
———
She groaned in annoyance, tossing the heel off. Melody cracked her knuckles before stuffing the shoes into their box, setting it beside her which was a pile of shoes she had already tried on. Pushing her back to the short wall that divided the aisles, the brunette felt someone staring. Her eyes cut to the side to see Caroline Forbes standing there. The fairytale woman smiled weakly, waving. "Hey. It's been a while."
"It's sure has," Caroline responded with a glare.
Melody sighed, closing her eyes. She rubbed her forehead before looking back up at her. "Look. Just because Klaus and Tyler aren't friends doesn't mean we can't have a normal conversation."
"Actually that's exactly what it means. Your boyfriend killed mine, turned him into a hybrid which sired him. Klaus isn't a good person."
"Well neither is Damon Salvatore and yet your best friend is making out with him behind Stefan's back," she snapped, extremely offended. There wasn't a single person she had met when she came to this town that she was still close with. They had all left the second she found her happy ending. So she guessed that they must not be worth it if they wanted to leave her behind. "It's disgusting how I find the person who makes me truly happy and I'm the bad guy."
Caroline frowned a bit, getting her point. She didn't say anything for a moment before sighing. "You're right. I have an idea. I can help you find some shoes for the dance and you can help me find some. We can talk about anything else besides boys and anytihng that relates to Elena. Deal?"
Melody thought for a moment, then nodded, smiling slightly. "Deal."
The vampire smiled back, grabbing a box from the shelf. "Try this one on." Melody took the box from her and got out the shoes, putting the right one on first. Caroline sat next to her since there was room for two on the bench. "I'm surprised that you are going to the dance."
"Yes well, Rebekah planned it so I figured why not. I'll be leaving town soon anyway." The reason for why she was leaving Mystic Falls hung in the air. But she cleared her throat, shoving the thought away. "And it's been a bit since I've gone to a party that I had the option of going to." Her laugh was weak because now all she could think about was when she would leave town.
Caroline seemed to follow along, placing a hand on her shoulder. "Do you love him?"
Melody gave her a pointed look. "You promised no boys."
"Okay but I'm curious!" The brunette groaned again, throwing off the heel that didn't fit. "You are dating Klaus Mikaelson, the Original Hybrid. There has to be something there because you don't seem like the type to just date whoever knocks on your door and hands you flowers."
"What gave you that idea?" she asked sarcastically though she was teasing her. Another box was handed to her and she opened it up. Her expression became serious. "I don't know if I love him just yet. I care about him but love is. . .complicated."
Caroline nodded. "Have you slept with him yet?"
Melody's eyes widened, nearly jumping out of her spot. "No! Oh hell no." Her head shook hastily, a small blush on her cheeks. She pushed a piece of hair behind her ear, embarrassed by the question the blonde asked so casually.
"Do you not want to?"
"I don't know Caroline!" she admitted, looking around to make sure no one was listening since she realized that her voice had risen up. "Maybe," she continued with a tiny shrug, calming down. "I've never had a boyfriend before so this is all new to me. And he's careful with me because he knows but sometimes he gives me that look."
She nodded again, understanding what she meant. "That look when he wants to rip your clothes off?
Melody smiled widely, blushing madly as she laughed, covering her face with her hands. "You have no filter I swear!" Caroline laughed with her, feeling giddy. The brunette smacked her with the heel. "But if you must know then yes, that's the look."
Once they calmed down, the Forbes smiled weakly. "I'm sorry for before. You're right, judging you is wrong. I may not like Klaus but if he makes you happy then that's what matters. If you truly believe that he is your happy ending then I'm not going to stop you. Just maybe talk to him about Tyler?" Her expression showed a bit of guilt for bringing it up.
The fairytale woman put the heel back in the box as she replied, "Of course. Even though I don't think he's your happy ending." Caroline's head tilted to the side a bit in confusion. "I mean, I've seen the look someone has when someone makes them happy but that's not the look you have with your epic love." Her eyes seemed to wander off as she got lost in her thoughts. "It's the look you have when nothing else is happening and it is just you and them. They smile at you and you smile at them. And for a split second, it's like your floating." She smiled. "And for that split second, you don't care when you'll fall. You just float and then you soar. And if they are your epic love, you never come back down."
Caroline was in shock, looking down at her hands in her lap. "Sounds like you know the feeling."
Melody blinked a few times before she shook her head. "Maybe. Or maybe I just watch too many romantic movies." The two laughed together. She then stood up. "I'm getting these shoes so why don't we go and find you some?" She held her hand out and the blonde grabbed it, allowing herself to be pulled into a standing position. But then she turned serious. "You'll have an epic love, Caroline. Everyone does."
———
Klaus had beat her to the dance, waiting for her at the door when she arrived. He stared at her for a moment, stunned by her appearance. Melody smirked at him, kissing his cheek. "Don't stare for too long. Your eyes will get stuck."
"Fine by me." She swatted his arm and he chuckled, holding out his arm to her. "Shall we?" She nodded once and they entered. The high school gym was decorated to fit the twenties-theme. It was pretty impressive. The only thing missing was the leader of the committee. Rebekah was nowhere in sight. "We show up to her idiotic dance and she isn't even here."
"She might be running late," she told him softly. "Come on, my hours of trying to find a dress and now shoes isn't going to waste still." They went to the dance floor and began to slow dance.
They were quiet for a bit before Klaus spoke up, leaning to her ear. "You would've loved the 1920s. The girls were reckless, sexy, fun. They literally used to dance until they dropped."
Melody hummed then smirked. "I was alive then, just not in this realm. Wonder what I would've been doing." She thought about it as they swayed. "Time runs differently in the Enchanted Forest. No doubt that I was still a kid, wishing on the second star to the right for my dad to come back for me."
He pulled back to look at her. "We haven't really talked about that before."
She shrugged. "Nothing to tell. My dad abandoned me to protect me from the person who I thought was my older brother. Then centuries later, he had his minions come to get me and Henry. The rest is history."
"You know that's not what I mean."
The brunette looked at him, sighing deeply. "It was a dark point in my life, Klaus. Can we talk about it some other time?" Her fingers rubbed the top of his back while his hands stayed in their place at her waist.
Klaus nodded once. "Of course." They both glanced around the room, seeing Rebekah still nowhere in sight. He looked back at her and she shook her head.
"It doesn't seem like her to ditch an event she planned, you know it. Think about it: the last time this happened your sister was daggered. So I say we go back to the house, get something that belongs to her, and then I'll do a locator spell."
He seemed surprised by the string of ideas. "You were already thinking about this, weren't you?
"You bet I was," Melody smirked with a wink. She grabbed his hand and led him back outside. "Besides, this party was boring anyway and we were only in there for a few minutes." They made it to the entrance, the dark sky looming overhead when she stopped, staring down at the line in front of her. "You have got to be kidding me."
Klaus saw the salt, raising an eyebrow, and letting go of her hand. "What is this?"
A voice spoke up from behind them. "Your mother is back."
They turned around to see Stefan there. Melody rolled her eyes with irritation. "That bitch doesn't know when to quit does she?"
———
Bonnie was chanting when they entered. Damon, Jeremy, and a boy Melody didn't recognize were there as well. From the looks on their faces, she had been at this for a while now. She didn't bother offering her help though. Matt walked in not long after, seeing them all standing there. "People are walking right out of the dance, past the barrier."
"Matt and I can leave, we can stop Esther ourselves," little Gilbert told them. "We just gotta find out where she is."
Melody actually laughed, making them all look over at her. "I'm sorry to burst your bubble but that's not going to work. It'll be a suicide mission." She pointed at them. "You two are humans. She's a thousand-year-old witch who created vampires. What are you going to do? Offer her a broomstick and bow to her?"
Klaus smirked a bit but then saw that they wouldn't get anywhere without some motivation. He flashed over to the human boy that wasn't familiar to them and choked him with his fist. "Suicide would be disappointing me! Now work your magic, witch, or I'll start killing people you fancy."
The brunette didn't react to his violence. She simply stared at the so-called heroes of Mystic Falls. "I'd listen to him if I were you, Bonnie." The witch turned to look at her. "Clocks ticking."
"Ah, don't be stupid, guys," Stefan told the couple. "Bonnie doesn't give a damn about us. The only reason she's helping us right now is to save Caroline and Tyler. You two start killing the people she cares about, she'll tell us all to go to hell."
Melody glanced over at Klaus, nodding. He let Jamie go. Everyone left the room to split up, except for the fairytale woman who stayed to make sure the Bennett didn't die. She pulled a map off the wall, laying it on the desk. Bonnie turned on the table lamp and the female in front of her ran her fingers across the map. "She can't be far. I'm guessing somewhere in the woods."
Klaus and Damon reentered, the Salvatore carrying a vial of blood. "Here. Jeremy made a little Gilbert blood donation for your locator spell."
Bonnie took the blood and looked at them. "I have to do this with you three lurking over me?"
"You're still mad at me for what happened to Abby. Let me apologize. I'm sorry Elijah forced us to turn your mother into a vampire to save Elena's life. Didn't exactly have a choice."
Melody scoffed. "Sure does sound like a choice to me. You saved Elena Gilbert over a mother."
Klaus wasn't interested in hearing an argument, knowing that his girlfriend would fight back with her quick wit. "Let's cut the dramatics and begin, shall we?"
None of them argued and so Bonnie poured the blood onto the map and began to chant. "Phasmatos Tribum Nas Ex Veras, Sequita Saguines, Ementas Asten Mihan Ega Petous." The blood formed a circular pool but didn't move an inch. "Esther is fighting me."
"Esther couldn't possibly have this much power. Unless she's channeling something."
Melody raised an eyebrow. "The only way she could do that is with a powerful object or a hotspot that's full of magic."
Her words seemed to trigger something in him as he tapped the map twice. "Get the humans ready. I know where she is." Damon asked him where. "The old cemetery."
Melody bit the inside of her cheek before she made up her mind, her stance shifting. "No need." They looked over at her. Her fingers cracked as her magic started to flow through her veins. "Humans can leave which means I can pass. I'll kill her myself." She shrugged so she didn't give away what was happening to her. Her magic was screaming, burning her, telling her to use it.
Klaus went to reach out for her but she was already gone. His fist clenched when all he got was air. "Damn it! Hurry up, do the spell!"
Bonnie went right back to work and Damon gave him an odd look. "What's your problem? Your girlfriend has it covered."
"You don't get it, do you?" he chuckled darkly, straightening his back. "If she kills my mother than her heart will turn dark. And there's no way I'm going to lose her to that darkness."
———
Melody stood in front of the salt line. She held her hand over it, twisting it. The barrier was broken instantly and she smirked victoriously. She stepped over to the grass, looking up to the stars and the bright moon. All she could think about was ending Esther's life, her first kill. It seemed fit given that the witch had ruined her life. Now she was going to end her's. What a perfect ending.
Jeremy and Matt were already there, no doubt trying to be the heroes of the day. Their weapons pointed at one another while Elena stood behind Esther, pleading for her to stop. She stepped into view, flicking her wrist so the humans flew backward, unharmed. The mother of the Mikaelsons saw her and raised her hand, ready to mumble an incantation. She was too late.
The victim of her curse was faster, hand raised as she channeled her dark magic. Esther gasped, her blood scolding her skin. Melody stepped forward, watching. Elena was in shock and in horror. "Isn't this just humorous? My brother always told me that all magic came with a price. And at first, I thought it just applied to our type of witches and warlocks. Guess I was wrong. Because now you are paying the price for what you did to me."
Her hand went into a fist, angry tears filling her eyes. "You are the reason I never meet my mother. You are the reason that my father had to raise me alone and why he had to leave me behind. It took my father and my brother centuries to find happiness after what you did to us! And we thought we were just unlucky. When in reality it was you. You destroyed us."
She tightened her grip and by this point, Esther was hanging on a thread. Elena spoke up. "Melody don't do this."
The said female looked over at her, glaring. "You don't get to tell me what to do! After all, why would you care? You tried trading your freedom for mine remember? That doesn't qualify you to speak to me." She flicked her other wrist, making it so the doppelganger couldn't talk. Then she moved toward the fallen witch. "I hope you enjoy your stay in Hell. I heard the devil has been waiting for you." Then she pretended to remember something. "Oh wait, you'll be on the Other Side, won't you? Oh dear. Well, I suppose you'll burn there too."
Melody smirked, tightening her grip one last time. Esther took her last breath, collapsing on the ground. The brunette put a finger to her lips. Klaus had arrived by that point, able to break through because of his mother's moment of weakness. He saw the scene and slowly looked up at the fairytale woman to see her smirking down at the fallen body.
Her thirst for revenge, that she didn't even know she really had, was now conquered.
———
Klaus had put Esther's body in a coffin alongside the others. He pulled the dagger out of Rebekah, setting it on the table before going over to Melody who stood over his mother's body, staring down at it. She hadn't spoken a word since the event. "Are you alright, love?" he asked in a concerned tone.
She tilted her head to the side, her eyes not straying. "I don't know." No tears were in her eyes when she spoke her next words. "My heart's dark, isn't it? I killed her, I killed Mikael, and now my heart isn't pure."
He sighed. "Your mother's heart is dark, as is your father's. If they can live with it, so can you. Now you need to rest. You had a stressful day."
"Okay." Her tone of voice was quiet and it only made him frown. She didn't even bother to argue as she left the room. Klaus watched her leave until she was gone.
The hybrid turned to look at Esther, his jaw clenched. "Your trap failed, mother. I live and I will go on living. Let your beloved spirits try to preserve you again, I dare you to come after me! I will build an army so big, no one will ever touch me. My survival will haunt you through eternity. You will never destroy me!" He got close to her face. "And if you dare to come near Melody again, I'll make sure you get that spot in Hell."
Little did he know, she had been standing in the hallway, listening. She wrapped her arms around herself and then walked away, going to her bedroom. Her phone taunted her and yet she ignored it, going to the window. She pressed her fingers on the glass, the tears finally appearing. But the woman knew that it had to be done. Her mother had to be avenged.
———
Melody killed yet again! So she's killed Mikael and Esther now. I'm interested in what you guys have to say about that bit and then about her little speech to Caroline about epic love. And surprisingly, this chapter only took me maybe three hours to write which is a record for me believe it or not. Usually, it takes me all day or around five to six hours. I hope you guys have a great day/night and don't forget to vote on this chapter, comment your thoughts, and follow me for updates!
