I stand in the study room, staring at Genevieve as she sits quietly at the table, examining pages of Esther's grimoire that contains the moonlight ring spell for the werewolves. Jackson and Oliver went to retrieve the rocks that were needed to make these rings, but that's all I know.

Klaus towers over the redhead, circling over her as she reads the papers. "Your mother's spell is as complicated as it is elegant. She was clearly a very gifted witch."

Klaus, rolling his eyes, snatches the page from her hand and points at it. "Is this the bit, here?"

Genevieve grabs it back from his fingertips and snaps at him, "Hey! Like I said, it's complicated. She bound protection magic to black kyanite stones. A werewolf with the stones is free from turning on a full moon."

"And what of the improvements?" Klaus eggs on and I listen on, wanting to know more about these rings. "This spell will enhance speed, strength, and agility." Genevieve answers.

She then lays down all the pages she was given, "Here. It should make a nice gift. I'm sure Hayley will be thrilled." Her voice sounded almost sounded jealous and it irked me. It was no news that she had a crush on Klaus back in the day, but now I'm here.

I move away from my spot and stand next to her, leaning my hands on the table and stare down at her. "It's not just for her, Genevieve. You are going to make many more. Let's say... about a hundred." I tell her, losing my patience just by her existence.

Genevieve looks back up at me, furrowing her eyebrows. "That's not the deal I made with Elijah." she frowns. I give her a nod, a small grin appearing on my face. "Well, Elijah isn't here. We are."

My eyes lock with Klaus' for a few moments and a smirk grows on his lips. I stand up straight as he walks across the room to stand next to me. "And if you corporate, you'll be granted more than what my brother has been giving you."

"Which is what?" Genevieve questions, flickering her eyes between the two of us.

"My mother's grimoire, from which I took these spells. You see, Elijah is offering you a mere peek at these pages, but I will grant it to you as a gift. If you pledge your loyalty to us, beginning with the creation of those rings."

So, we eventually find out that Jackson and Oliver were kidnapped by Marcel and his men. Klaus and Elijah went over there to investigate and save the two werewolves, and I haven't heard from them since.

Marcel clearly wants to put a dent on our plan. I'm assuming he believes the werewolves coming back is a threat to his vampires, but knowing Klaus, he wouldn't give up that easily.

And I wait here, babysitting Genevieve and Hayley, who's pacing around in the room repeatedly. Elijah and Jackson walk in, all disheveled with ash covering their ripped clothing.

Hayley gasps, running to the two men and pulls Jackson into a hug. "Thank god you're alive!"

"Where's Klaus?" I whisper to myself and Elijah points behind him where Klaus walks in. "Right here, love." he says and I smile, a feeling of relief over washes me.

I take a seat on the couch, across from Hayley, who's tending Jackson's wounds. My eyes follow Klaus' moves who walks to a table and pours himself a drink.

"Where are the stones?" I ask them, noticing their hands are empty. "Scattered across the bed of the Mississippi, I'd imagine." Elijah answers with a sigh.

"Marcel's not a fool. He knows an empowered werewolf army would mean the end of vampires in New Orleans. The explosion is his way of saying he means to prevent that. For all the good it'll do him." Klaus adds on.

"Well, it did him pretty damn well, didn't it?" Hayley then looks at Elijah, who frowns. Jackson shakes his head, "This is my fault. I'll find a way to fix it."

Hayley rubs his shoulder affectionately. "No, Jack, you're hurt. No one's blaming you." she tells him and Klaus sets his drink down, pointing at him. "I'm blaming you! Those stones will be hard to replace." He looks over at Elijah and smiles evilly, "Fortunately, I always have a backup plan."

His plan ended up meaning Francesca, a woman who represents the human faction of the treaty, and she obtained some stones to us at such short notice. However, I didn't trust her or her large group of brothers one bit.

While the rest of them were going over their plans, I delivered the stones to Genevieve in the other room and she starts her magic. I close the doors behind me and walk carefully to the long table she was working at.

She clears her throat, "You and Klaus seem pretty close. To be honest, I'm kind of envious of your relationship with him."

I roll my eyes and ignore her statement, wanting to come across something more important than her conversation starter. "I don't trust you, Genevieve. At all. Just between the two of us... if you betray us, I will hunt you down myself."

At this point I was spitting out things that I could ever actually do. After all, I am just human and she could kill me in an instant.

The two doors open immediately after those words came out of my mouth. Klaus walks into my view and smiles at the two of us, making his way toward Genevieve. "I trust you're ready?"

Genevieve gulps loudly, "Um, the last ingredient is personal. As the spell is designed to control transformation, I need the blood of a werewolf who doesn't turn on a full moon. My first thought was Hayley, because of the pregnancy—"

"Out of the question. I'd just as soon limit the woman carrying my child side to the side-effects of your witchery. I am half-wolf, I control my form—use my blood." Klaus holds his hand out to her, but when she grabs a knife, he grabs her roughly by the arm.

"If you fail to hold up your end of the deal, the consequences for you will be apocalyptic." Klaus' voice sounded intimidating but I raise my eyebrows with a grin in response, staring back at the redhead.

Genevieve nervously chuckles. "Do you two always threaten people who just want to simply help?"

Klaus then looks at me with a questionably raised eyebrow and I shrug back at him with a smile. After that, Genevieve grabs his hand and uses the knife to cut his palm. The blood drips over the stones and it hisses as she begins the spell.

Shortly after, Hayley and Elijah join us in the study room and we watch Genevieve carefully as she continues to chant the spell.

Francesca rushes into the room. "My people say Marcel is on the move, and he's bringing friends." she tells us and Klaus gets up quickly, starting to leave the room.

"Get Maya and Hayley to safety." Klaus says to his brother before exiting the room. I shake my head in protest, "No. I'm staying and helping."

Hayley nods, "Me too. Someone needs to watch her." She gestures to Genevieve. Francesca steps in and looks at Elijah. "You should help Klaus. My brothers and their security detail won't be much against a vampire army. I'll stay with Hayley." she says.

"Go, Elijah." Hayley nods and walks over to him, "And don't hold back."

I follow Elijah out of the room. "Maya, I'm not a fond of you fighting Marcel's vampires. You are very fragile compared to them and if something were to happen—"

I stop him and rest my hand on his shoulder. "Elijah, it's okay. I know what I can and cannot handle. Klaus needs our help and I can't let him do this by himself."

He reluctantly nods and the two of us stroll into the courtyard, where many of Marcel's vampires were flooding in from every direction. We meet Klaus in the center of the room and each side of us soon gets coated with vampires.

Klaus frowns at me when I stand directly next to him, but says nothing. He then smirks while raising his voice. "I thought this lot had learnt their lesson!"

"Well, they're not exactly renowned for their genius." Elijah responds, recurring his cuffs.

"So, where's the ringleader of this circus?" Klaus yells loudly enough so everyone in the courtyard can hear him. He turns to face the other side of the room, "Too afraid to show his face?"

"I'm here!" A familiar voice appears. Marcel stands on the balcony, staring down at the three of us. "And I'm gonna offer you one last chance to pack your stuff and get the hell out of my town."

"You'll allow your men to rush to their deaths? Again?" Klaus questions. "Look around. Every vampire in the Quarter is coming out! They want their city back. No surrender this time. You're gonna have to kill us all." Marcel tells us, smirking in the process.

"Okay!" Klaus says, clearly unfazed. "I think I'll start with you."

Next thing I know, a hand grabs onto my waist and pushed me away from my spot. When we stopped, I was staring down Klaus and Elijah, who were now looking at my empty spot. I was currently on the balcony where Marcel was just located seconds ago.

Marcel holds onto me very tightly as I try and struggle out of his grip, but he's obviously much stronger than me. "Fine. Then, come get us."

I felt the wind hit my face as Marcel speeds us away from the Mikaelson Compound. I should've known he was going to use me as leverage against Klaus. It's a perfect way to retaliate him since Klaus is known for getting the best leverage against his enemy.

He stops running and I take a look around my surroundings. We're in the middle of the dark streets of New Orleans and most of street lights weren't working. so I had a hard time seeing.

"I don't want to hurt you, Maya. I wish you weren't involved, but I needed a reason for Klaus to follow me out here." Marvel tells me as soon as he releases me.

"Get away from her!" I hear Klaus' voice enter the street. He angrily skulks down the street, throwing a punch at Marcel's cheek once he gets near him.

I walk backwards in shock, nearly tripping over my feet. "Maya, get out of here!" Klaus yells and I nod, running away from the two of them and all I can hear are faint grunts as I get farther and farther away.

§

I wandered around the streets for awhile now and ended up back where I started. I wasn't familiar with the street names and somehow went in a circle. Blood was splattered on a car, but no one was in sight.

I started to worry. I wasn't sure who's blood it belonged to or if it was both of theirs. I couldn't go back to the compound, knowing I could be dead in seconds. I called Hayley a couple times but there was no answer and now my mind is paranoid with fear.

I hear hushed voices nearby and I follow those voices, wondering if they belonged to Klaus and Marcel. When I get close, I recognized Klaus' voice and a feminine voice that sounded much like Genevieve's. My blood starts to boil, but I keep quiet and listen on their conversation outside the restaurant door.

"Why aren't I healing? What have you done to me?" I hear Klaus' voice laced in pain and confusion, followed by Genevieve's loud footsteps in the very soundless night.

"Well, you and your precious human girlfriend were the ones who wanted me to cast the spell. So, I made your stones... by linking their power to your blood. And now, each full moon, whenever a werewolf uses their power to keep from turning, they'll be drawing from your strength! And causing you pain."

Klaus gasps in utter pain and the sound of him in agony made my heart drop. "After all I offered you, you will betray me?" he questions.

"Look me in the eyes, Nik. Were you ever planning to give me your mother's grimoire?" Genevieve asks him. "I suppose you'll never know." he responds.

"Francesca kept her end of the deal. There is, after all, honor among thieves, even if they are werewolves. And as for you? The great irony is, in wanting to take the city, you lost everything. Your sister Rebekah, your adopted son Marcel, and now, even your child and her mother will suffer, all because of your greed."

I slowly tip-toe into the restaurant and make no noise. Genevieve stands there, towering over Klaus, who's on the ground in affliction. He notices me and I put a finger up my lips to signal silence.

He stares back at the woman in front of him, lunging at her, but collapses at her feet. "I will kill you." he mutters.

"As weak as you are? Doubtful." she laughs and this is when I grab one of the wooden chairs and smash it against her head. Genevieve falls to the floor unconsciously and I let out a huge breath I didn't know I was holding.

I slide down the floor next to Klaus and grab both sides of his cheeks so that he's looking right at me. This weak eyes stare back at mine and I frown, taking in all the injuries on his skin that wasn't healing.

"I thought I told you to go." he says with a soft voice. "I'd never leave you, Klaus." I reply, holding his hand and helping him off of the ground.

We exit the restaurant, leaving Genevieve's senseless body there. Surely she'll wake up soon and plan her revenge but at this moment, all I cared about was getting Klaus far away from her as possible.

We walk for some time and the restaurant was far out of sight. Klaus barely kept his eyes open, struggling to take his next step. I pull the two of us down to sit on the edge of the sidewalk and he leans his head on my shoulder.

"I need you to drink some of my blood so you have some energy." I tell him, running my fingers through his hair. He hear him grunt out in protest, "No. That was a one time thing, Maya. I'm not feeding from you again."

He raises his head and sits up straight, staring into the distance. "Klaus, I can't look at you in pain knowing I can do something to help." I tell him, crossing my arms in annoyance.

"I already fed off of some poor custodian and it did no help. Every werewolf that has a ring is draining me internally." Klaus says, his eyes never leaving ground beneath him.

I let out a deep sigh, burying my head in my hands. I cannot believe we let it get this bad, this fast. I close my eyes and images of the church flash through my brain. A terrible feeling in my gut returns from the same night I got images of the bayou where Hayley was in danger.

I lift my eyes up and Klaus' ears are perked up and I can only assume he's listening to something. "Klaus, Hayley's in danger." I tell him and he looks at me with wide eyes. "I can hear her screaming in the distant."

From what Rebekah told me, she thinks it's a connection with my unborn child and every time Hayley's in danger, I seem to get a bond between them.

"Go to the church right now. I'll catch up with you." I pick myself up from the ground and he soon does the same, only he was grunting.

"You are not staying out here by yourself." Klaus tries to convince me. I grab his hand and soften my eyes. "Use the rest of the energy that you have and get there fast. Hayley needs your help."

I end up persuading him to leave without me and he soon flashes away. At this point, I was running away from the street and toward the place I needed to be.

Even being lost on some random avenue, the feeling I've received has drawn me to the church and I knew exactly where I needed to go. Unlike last time, I didn't feel too great about entering this one.

My feet eventually stand in front of St. Anne's Church and all I can hear are Hayley's screams and Klaus threatening words through the big doors.

I rush right in and spot Klaus pinned to the wall and a few witches, including Genevieve, hovering over Hayley. Confusion hits me until I realize that Hayley's in labor and they're trying to get my baby out of her.

A brunette witch with curly hair spots me and raises her hand before muttering something. I had no time to reaction when I feel everything in me drain into nothing.

***

Monique releases her hand as Maya's lifeless body falls to the ground. Monique didn't care who ended up dead. She needed to do what was best for her coven and for her ancestors. Maya just ended up being collateral damage.

Hayley screams in horror, watching her newly best friend fall to her death. Tears continue to flow out of her eyes, barely finding air to breathe as she sobs. Hayley kicks the witches that are towering over her, but they held her in place.

"You couldn't wait until after Hayley gave birth? You only made this process more difficult, Monique." Genevieve hisses at the brunette, trying her hardest to focus on delivering that baby.

"I must do what's necessary for the coven and we must sacrifice." Monique says, holding down Hayley's arm as she continues to cry out Maya's name in sadness.

Klaus stares in shock from above, no longer shouting out deadly threats. His mind could barely process what was shown to his eyes. He couldn't move a muscle and all he could feel were the tears rolling down his cheeks.

His worst fear had come true and now he doesn't know how to react. He's stuck to the wall and he tried his hardest to release himself but he can't and now there's no point.

Hayley's mourning cries goes straight through his ears and in that moment all he wanted was to feel nothing and to listen to nothing. He couldn't save her.

Klaus knew the dangers of falling in love with a human the second he laid eyes on her. There were a thousand years worth of enemies and he tried his hardest to protect her but, today he couldn't.

His mind snaps back to reality when he hears a baby's soft cries. Genevieve wraps the newly born baby in a blanket and looks at her in awe. "You have a beautiful baby girl."

"We must start the sacrifice as soon as the moon sets with the morning sky—" Genevieve states but gets cut off by Hayley, "—Please. Please, can I hold her?"

Genevieve brings the baby over so Hayley can hold her. Hayley stares at the beautiful child, choking up a tear. "I'm sorry your mother couldn't see you." she whispers to the baby.

Suddenly, Monique grabs Hayley by the hair, pulls her head back, and slits her throat with a knife. Hayley gasps and her eyes roll back lifelessly, falling back onto the table.

Klaus screams as he witnesses another death that he couldn't prevent. The witches grab the baby and make their way out of the church. He yells again and Monique twists her wrist, which causes Klaus to fall to the floor, weakened.

Klaus sits there for awhile, not wanting to raise his head and look at the two corpses. He tried listening for a faint heartbeat, hoping he could save them, but they were gone and never coming back.

The woman he loved was no longer alive and Klaus had a hard time believing that. Just moments ago she was alive and well, wanting nothing more than to keep him safe. Klaus began to wonder if he had taken her with him instead of leaving her, would things have ended up differently?

He brings himself up and walks to Maya, kneeling down next to her. He couldn't help but sob immediately after taking in the thought that she is in fact gone forever. "Maya, I'm sorry."

He picks her up and brings her next to Hayley's body, moving them to the sacristy. He couldn't believe his eyes, wanting to reverse in time and fix everything.

What feels like hours after, Elijah bursts into the church and looks around desperately. "Hayley!" he frantically yells, stopping dead at his tracks when he finds his brother sitting at the sacristy next to his beloved and Hayley. Elijah was out of breath and panting due to the werewolf bites he has received while fighting earlier.

"No. No, no. No..." Elijah drops to his knees once he realizes that both women are dead. "They're gone." Klaus numbly states.

Elijah's eyes coat with tears and begins to cry. This triggers Klaus to cry some more and while doing so, he holds out his now bitten wrist. "You've been bitten. Here."

After Klaus heals his brother, Elijah stands up and lays Hayley's body back onto the table while Klaus still holds onto Maya.

"How?"

"I was bested." Klaus responds, not wanting to replay his vision in his head.

"You were bested. Huh." Elijah mutters quietly and walks toward Klaus and stares at him furiously, "You were BESTED? My invincible brother!" he shouts.

Klaus pulls himself weakly to his feet and looks Elijah in the eyes. "They took the baby. But there's still time. We can save her."
