Chapter Fifty-Seven

He stops when he sees me. "Andy," he breathes.

"Oh, shit," I mutter, standing up. I brush my dress off.

"What are you doing here?" Bryce asks. He walks closer.

"I got lost trying to find the bathroom," I say. "What are you doing?"

"It's not important," he says. "You said you were lost?" I nod.

"I swear it's like a fucking maze," I say. Bryce smiles. "Um, are you lost or do you know how to get back?"

"I know how to get back," he says. We start walking. It's awkward.

"So, um, how have you been?" I ask. God, I sound so stupid. Bryce shrugs.

"Good," he says. Of course he would have been good. "You?"

"Good," I say. I'm lying. I've been okay without him, far from good. I pull out the Brandy and take a sip. I offer it to Bryce.

"I usually don't drink," he says, his fingers brush mine and takes the flask. It's the first time we've touched in weeks. He takes a drink and hands it back to me. I put it back in my clutch.

"Then why are you?" I ask.

"Things change," Bryce tells me. We make it back to the ballroom. "I'll see you around," he says and then he's gone.

"Fuck," I mutter. I look around, trying to find Greyson. I spot him. "How's it going?" I ask Greyson. He grins at me.

"Good, good. I was actually just coming to find you," he says. "Uh, Christian and I are getting out of here. She got a ride from one of the teachers so, we're gonna take my car. Is that cool?"

"Yeah, no problem. Have fun. I'll get a ride from someone," I say. He grins at me and I grin back.

"Cool. Blondie's staring at you by the way," Greyson says.

"Have fun." He nods and then walks away. I look around trying to find someone to talk to. I don't really have a lot of friends besides Greyson. I look at my watch. It's 8:59. They're going to announce Prom King and Queen in half an hour. I sigh.

I sit down. After ten minutes I pull out my phone and start walking, so I can call Brandon or Cross and see if one of them can pick me up.

"Going somewhere?" Bryce asks. He's standing by the staircase.

"I was going to make a call," I say. I need to get out of here, be away from him.

"There's no service," he says.

"Fuck, that's right," I mutter.

"Did you need to be somewhere?" he asks.

"Kind of. I was just going to get out of here. I'll figure something out," I say.

"I'll take you wherever you need to go." He pauses. "If you'll give me one dance." I open my mouth but nothing comes out. I nod before I can do anything else.

"It'll just be one dance?' I ask. He nods. "Okay," I say. I don't think it's a good idea, but if it gets me a ride, it doesn't matter. Bryce leads me to the dance floor. It's a slow song.

His hands slide around my waist and I put my arms around his neck. I inhale sharply when he pulls me closer to him. His touch feels so good. "I never did tell you how lovely you look," he says. I breathe in his scent and shift closer to him. His fingers are touching my bare back.

We sway together. Everything else kind of fades. "I missed you," I murmur. I don't know why. Maybe it was the Brandy. Bryce stiffens. Shit.

But then his hands tighten and he says, "I missed you too." We keep dancing. "I lied earlier when I said I was good," he says. "It hasn't been good without you." His eyes meet mine.

"I wish we hadn't broken up," I say. He nods. The song ends and Bryce pulls away.

"Where do you need to go?" he asks as we walk up the stairs. I shrug.

"Anywhere but here," I say. A guy from the football team walks up to Bryce.

"Hey, man. After-party's at Kevin's house," the guy says. Bryce nods.

"Cool, man. I'll see you later." The guy walks away. "I don't know about you, but personally, I'm hungry," Bryce tells me.

"Yeah, me too, actually," I say.

"We can grab dinner and then I'll drive you wherever," Bryce says. I nod.

We end up driving to a diner. We're seated in a booth. "What can I get you guys to drink?" a waitress asks. She's in her fifties.

"Coffee," I say. She nods.

"You want that caffeinated?" I nod. "And for you, hon?" she asks to Bryce.

"Coffee," he says. She nods.

"I'll be back to take your orders," she says, walking away. The diner isn't very full. I'm not really sure what to say.

Our waitress comes back with coffee and takes our orders. Bryce and I make small talk for a while.

"Can I ask you something?" he says. I nod. "What did you see in Colton?" I laugh.

"That's a good question," I say. My mind flashes back to everything. "I don't know. He was charming. Colton helped me through some things. But it's weird because I don't miss him. I don't think about him."

He looks like he wants to say something else, but our food comes. It feels good to be with him. I don't know where we're at. It's kind of like a thin line. I'm not sure if he's ready to be back together and I don't want to risk that. Maybe he's just being friendly.

"Do you have to be home by a certain time?" Bryce asks. I shake my head. "There's a place that I want to show you."

"Okay." We finish eating and he pays the bill. Bryce and I walk back to his car. "So, where are we going?" I ask.

"It's a secret," he tells me. He turns on the radio and I roll my window down slightly. It's a nice night out. Clear skies, the moon's bright. I don't where he's taking me, but it doesn't matter because I trust him. We drive for fifteen minutes. "Shut your eyes," he says. I shut them and I feel the car stop. "You can open them."

I gasp. It doesn't feel like we're in the city even though we can't be more than fifteen minutes away. We're in a field that seems to go on forever. "It's beautiful," I say.

"I know. I come here sometimes to think." He looks around. "I've been coming here a lot lately."

"What have you been thinking about?" I ask. He looks at me.

"You," he says. Bryce leans closer to me. "I know that we're not really together anymore but I can't stop thinking about you." His hands cup my face and then he's kissing me.

And it's not a dream.

Bryce is telling me all of the things that I've wanted to hear and he's kissing me. But it's real this time. I kiss him back and thread my hands in his hair. God, I've missed him. He's kissing me deeply and my head's spinning like it always does when he touches me.

He pulls me onto his lap and his hands roam over my back. I rub against him and keep my hands in his hair. He moans and presses closer to me. My hands slip under his jacket and unbutton his vest. He grips my hips tighter and I frown when my back hits the steering wheel. It's kind of awkward and cramped.

I pull away. "Hey, Bryce?" I ask, wiping off my mouth.

"Yeah?" he asks. He's slightly out of breath.

"Can we move to the back row?" His eyes darken and he nods. I open the door and climb off of his lap. He shuts the door and we fall back into the car. His mouth moves to my neck and his hands are everywhere. I start unbuttoning his dress shirt.

I gasp when his fingers skim my thighs. My fingers finally reach his bare skin. His hands move farther up my thighs. I moan and arch up into him. He pulls away and looks at me. "Andy, there's something I have to say," he tells me. I sit up.

"What is it?" I ask. I cup his face in my hands. "You can tell me anything."

He nods. He looks nervous. "I-" He's cut off by his phone ringing. He pulls it from his pocket and answers it. "Mom? What's up? Come on...okay...I know, I know...You're sure? Okay, I'll be there soon."

"Is everything okay?" I ask him.

"My mom wants me to come home. I'm sorry," he says.

"It's okay," I say. "What was it that you wanted to tell me?"

"It's not important. I'll tell you later," he says. He climbs off me and we get out of the back row, going back into the front. I see him fixing his suit. I zip my dress up and straighten it. "Where do you want me to drop you off?"

"I'm not sure. Maybe the after-prom party?" I say as we drive. I wonder what Bryce was going to tell me. He nods. "You're sure you don't want to say anything?" I ask.

"Don't worry about it, sweetheart. It's not important," Bryce says. I smile, feeling relieved. He called me sweetheart. He pulls up in front of a house. "This is Kevin's house." I nod. It seems like there's a party happening.

"Okay. Bye," I say.

"I'll call you later," he says. I get out of his car and walk up to the house. I open the door and walk inside. It's pretty crammed. People are making out, drinking, dancing, talking and doing other stuff. I wander around trying to find the booze. I make it to the kitchen where I grab a beer.

I walk around the house. I don't know who I'm looking for. Someone taps me on the shoulder and I spin around. Colton.

"Hey," I say. "How's it going?"

"Good," he says, grinning. We have to yell to hear each other over the blaring music. "I'm Prom King."

"That's good," I say.

"Hey, can we go somewhere and talk?" Colton asks.

"Uh, sure," I say. He leads me upstairs. There's like ten floors. Whoever owns the house must be super rich. Colton and I end up in a den type of room. No one else is in it. "So what's it like to be Prom King?" I ask.

"It's cool," Colton tells me. "Did you leave early?" he asks.

"Yeah," I say. "So, what'd you want to talk about?" He tugs his hands through his hair.

"So you and Bryce, huh?" he says. He doesn't seem arrogant anymore.

"Uh, yeah. We broke up a couple of weeks ago," I say. I play with my bag.

"I saw you guys dancing. It seemed like you were together," Colton says. I frown.

"Look, I don't want to talk to you about Bryce. If there's something else you wanna say, great. If not, I'm going to leave," I tell him.

"Did you sleep with him?" Colton asks.

"You don't get to ask me that," I say. "You has sex with numerous amounts of girls while we were together. You don't get to ask me if I slept with Bryce."

"Why won't you tell me? It's not a hard question," he says.

"You don't get to know!" I say.

"Fine. Did you sleep with Greyson?" he asks.

"Jesus Christ, Colton! You're still such a dick!" I yell. He tugs his hair again. It seems like he's trying to figure something out.

"2:29 AM," Colton tells me.

"What the fuck does that even mean?" I ask. He walks closer to me.

"That was that exact moment I realized that I loved you."
