My Sister

The sun had set and lamps were being used to light the ambiance. Slowly, Lin trotted into the quiet home to see Sebastian on the couch, watching a movie, and Petra cooking. "Hey, where's Nani?" The family man asked, setting his backpack on the bench by the door. Both children pointed to the bedroom, but knowing his "daughter", Lin had to be sure. With a quick peak, Lin saw Nastasia in her bed fully asleep. "Unusual for a Wednesday, but okay," Lin whispered, heading back to the kitchen. "Whatcha making, P?" Lin asked, sliding past his youngest to grab a water bottle out the fridge. Petra shrugged. That was the first time Petra didn't shutter or get scared about her father being so close to her. It was kind of nice, but jarring in itself.
"White chicken soup. It's Sebastian's favorite and he promised to take me to Gillians if I made it. Hope that's okay," she said. Lin couldn't help but gawk. Phillipa had done such an amazing job while he was away and he couldn't thank her or show her enough how much he appreciated it, if he did it for the rest of his life.
"Yeah, sounds good. Hope, you made enough for me," Lin leaned. Petra nodded with a small smile.
"Yeah. Don't worry," she replied. Lin did a small happy dance in his brain, before heading to his bedroom to get comfortable for the rest of night; which was already going better than he'd imagined.

Four hours outside of Austin, Texas, Phoebe, Renée, and Jasmine sat on the beds of the hotel room they occupied as Pippa's fate was decided. "Oh my gosh! Are you done?" Jasmine groaned, lying back next to Renée. The water faucet shut off and the bathroom door emerged.
"Impatience is not cute on you," Pippa said, flipping the test over and setting it on the TV stand.
"Now, we wait," Renée said, watching Phillipa take a seat next to her sister-in-law.
"Are you going to tell Lin about you and Cody?" Phoebe asked, clearly forgetting what happened last time Lin lost his cool and found his alcohol.
"Hopefully there will be nothing to tell. When this test comes back negative, we will never have to speak of this again. I can't risk losing him again. I love him, too much," Pippa whimpered. The girls crowded around their best friend and pulled her into a massive group hug.
"Everything will work out," Renée kindly assured, even though she wasn't 100 percent sure of that. Pippa needed encouragement, not truth. That could come later.
7:27 PM
Hailee dropped onto her best friends fire escape, ready to knock when she saw her in the bed. What? Hailee checked the time, unclear if she had accidentally walked herself through a time vortex to a place where her best friend slept before midnight. Confounded, Hailee slipped through the window and slammed the opening shut. "Ahh!" Nani jumped.
"What are you doing? Get up!" Hailee yelled, stripping out of her jacket and shoes to slump next to her bestie.
"Get up? Girl, I'm sleep," Nastasia muttered. Hailee shook her head and pulled out her phone.
"Did your mom leave, yet? I need her opinion in something and my mom isn't helping," Hailee asked, scrolling through her text messages. Nani immediately rolled to her side, away from Hailee and nodded.
"She left this morning. Just call her," Nastasia replied. A smirk dripped from Hailee's lips as she moved to her FaceTime app to call her 'aunt'. The phone rang for a moment before, she caught a glimpse of Phillipa looking away and nodding.
"Hey, auntie!" Hailee beamed. "How's... wherever you are?" She pleasantly asked. Pippa's eyes narrowed, not shocked that Hailee called, because she was know for it, but confused about her excitement.
"Hi, Hailee," Pippa lightly smiled. "Everything is fine," she answered. Hailee panned then phone to her best friend, who was trying to get back to sleep.
"Great. There's Nani. She's sleeping, which you obviously know is weird, but anyways..." Hailee trailed off, going into a long winded question that Phillipa was sort of listening too. She couldn't get passed the fact that her eldest daughter was in the bed before Buskers last walk. That hadn't happened since she was 5.
"Hailee, honey, why haven't you asked your mom about your period issue?" Pippa asked, clueing back in when it was her turn. She saw a slight eye roll leave the teen. "Ahh, what's up with you and mom? I thought we were on better terms?" Pippa asked, finally getting to the root of the call.
"She and I got into it because daddy said he didn't want me going to work while I was in school, and she didn't agree. I mean I don't think I'm cut out for working, but she thinks I need a sense of responsibility. I think that trying to maintain a 3.7 GPA is already a huge responsibility. But she wouldn't hear it," Hailee finally revealed. Pippa felt bad for Hailee and Carleigh. They weren't always as close as Pippa and her girls, and it made it worse when Javi tried not to get in the middle but did.
"Listen, sweetheart. It sounds like mom is just worried that you are getting to lax with school. Which means your making it look easy. Something you need to teach Nani," Pippa baited. She watched the screen jerk towards her daughter who wore a fake scowl.
"Hey, I have a 3.5. It's not that bad! It's better that Sebastian's 1.7!" Nastasia blame shifted. Pippa's eyes went wide.
"A 1.7? Does he only put his name on the papers? I'm going have to talk to him about that. But anyways, Hailee, I hope that helped. I have to go. Nani, make sure you all get your homework done. And tell dad to call me when he gets a chance," Pippa said, hanging up the phone.
Sliding the metal into her pocket, Phillipa got off the bed and picked up the test. When she flipped it, she wasn't sure if her eyes were playing tricks. "I don't think I see a line," Pippa said. Phoebe, being a professional, got up and met Phillipa's side.
"Uhh..." she examined. Renée and Jasmine sat quietly for a moment, while Pippa bit at her finger nails. "Nope. You are not pregnant. There is no line, at all," Phoebe confirmed. The girls squealed in excitement before taking a collectively deep sigh.
"Stop having unprotected sex! I can't keep doing this!" Renée reprimanded. Pippa nodded and dropped onto she and Phoebes shared bed.
"Agreed," And with that done, the woman could now focus on the next task.
8:34 AM
Pippa leaned against the drivers door of Renée's SUV. She was standing across the street from a small house, with a lot of Hispanic charm. A little boy ran out the front as a bus pulled up at the corner. Then she saw her.
Ariana had never been tall, maybe 5'3. But to see her in person, standing at the front door waving off the child as a taller boy passed her side, was a wake up call for Phillipa. That was her sister.
The actress removed her shades for a second, catching the eye of her estranged family member. She knew she had completely the first obstacle, when Ari walked off her porch and stood arms folded in the middle of the walkway.
Pippa took the opportunity to cross the clear street and stand on the side walk before the stone path leading up to the pink house. "So, you just gonna stand over there like a stranger and pretend like we didn't spend our childhoods playing dolls together?" Ari asked. Pippa's lip started to quiver and before the two knew it, they were engulfed in one another.
From the car, the road trip buddies watched in awe. "This is why we made this trip," Renée gawked.
The hug lasted for a couple of moments, both women in tears, when a young girl came to the door, holding a baby girl on her shoulder. "Mom! I think Elena's bottle is too hot," the girl called. The Soo sisters pulled away as Ariana turned back.
"Uhh, you guys should come in. The boys are off to school and I'm off," Ari offered, before following the girl into the house. Adrenaline coursed through Pippa as she waved the car full in her direction. This trip was looking up after all.
—
Sat in the cozy living room of the small home, Pippa, Ari, Jasmine, Renée, and Phoebe occupied the sectional while the young girl sat at the table with a laptop in front of her and baby seat next to it. "That is my daughter, Etholina. P, you haven't seen her since she was Elena's age and now she's a mom herself," Ariana introduced, trying her best to seem proud even if she was slightly embarrassed.
"You've never met them, but I have two daughters, three and six years younger than her. Nastasia and Petra," Pippa replied. Ariana's eyes lit up a bit, hearing that her sister was a mom.
"How did mom take that?" Ari rhetorically asked, basically already knowing that answer. Pippa gave her a you-already-know look causing them to giggle. "What about Scott? Is he still hopelessly in love with Vanessa?" She asked. Phoebe's eyebrow rose as Pippa glanced in her direction.
"Actually, a couple of years after you left, Scott and Vanessa broke up, because he wanted to help me take care of Nani in the city while I was in school. She moved to London," Pippa answered. "Scott actually went to the army, where he met Phoebe," Pippa introduced. Ari sizes up her sister-in-law with a look of gratitude.
"No way. She looks like model! How did my brother ever get to be with a girl like you?" Ariana gushed. Phoebe blushes a bit, confused as to why Pippa said Ari wasn't chipper. She seemed ecstatic.
"He got a girl like me pregnant. We got married. And our son was born. I'm an OB now and he just got a second board certification to be a Anesthesiologists," Phoebe replied. Ari playfully rolled her eyes.
"Seems like a pattern in our family. I pray your girls or our boys, break that one. Hopefully one of kids break that. I love my granddaughter, but having my 20 year old be a single mom, isn't ideal," Ari said. Pippa and Phoebe couldn't have agreed more. Phoebes eldest was only 14 and her youngest was 11. She wasn't worried, but she didn't need any more babies in the house.
And Pippa was confident that her girls were fine, especially since as far as she knew one was gay with a girlfriend. Sebastian was always a wild card, but if she really wanted to, she could blame it on Lin's side.
"So, tell me. What I did I miss?" Ari asked. The women shared a giggle before getting into the longest story they would ever tell.
9:44 AM
Nani sat up in her, slowly. She heard music playing and for a moment forgot what day it was. But, soon she woke up to see she had massively overslept. "Shit!" She cursed, jumping out of her bed only to land in the floor as her head spun.
Once collected, she emerged from her room in her pajamas to see Lin at the island working on his laptop. "Dad! Why didn't you tell me I was late?" She yelled. Lin glanced back with a chuckle and shook his head.
"You have a fever. You're not going to school. I already, called mom and the school. Go get back in the bed," Lin said. Nani, didn't feel like she was warm. Yeah, her head was spinning. And her body ached, but she figured it was weird PMS. However, she wasn't going to miss out on the opportunity to not have to go to school. Therefore, she skidded back to bed and jumped under her warm covers.
Sounds good to me.
